"From Tadd Dameron through Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine, Cannonball Adderly and Benny Golson, to his own 17-piece "Supersound" big band, Charli Persip has been one of the most in-demand drummers in all of jazz, as well as in the pop genre. A textbook example of how to play the drums, Persip has proven his worth in a wide variety of ensembles and handled the transitions from one group to the next without missing a beat. Learn from his experiences and share some of his insights in this practical, down-to-earth text. Newly revised and expanded to include "The Warm-Up Exercise," this book for all musicians and music lovers is loaded with playing tips, great advice and anecdotes."

I met charlie in chicago in the late 60's. i went to late breakfast with him. He was one of the nicest people on the planet. I learned quite a bit from him.

Rather than encourage blazing foot and hand speed like the mass majority of double bass drum and multi-drum players, Charlie is talking music. I will buy a book that speaks from experience with some of the greatest players and advisers of all time.

You wont make too much progress playing what you can already play.... aka words of wisdom

Owrkeeng, Charlie has been around a lot longer than most drummers today and knows what he likes. I too enjoy old heads. If played correctly, they are designed to outlast you. Bright shiny drums need a whole lot of breaking in time. In many ways he can more than afford new heads but the heads are sympathetic to the hammered molecules between shell and head; which is why old vintage drums sound the best.

i think it would have been a little more respectful if the music wasnt played so loudly over charli speaking.

The music playing constantly at the back while He's talking is probably not required in this context (as nice as it is). What He's saying needs to the focus of attention. Sorry, not trying be a jerk just saying this with Love. Thank You for these videos.

IT would have been much better if NO Music was playing when Persip was trying to talk. It's very annoying!

+retrorex use headphones and listen only to the right channel, much clearer, the music is almost all in the left channel.

+coley22 Actually they are well tuned. Jazz drums have very tight heads.

I know this is an old comment but maybe take a second listen, those drums sound tonal and distinctive. To my ears regarding many rock drummers’ tunings, the tom toms don’t always sound distinct and the bass drums sound like a toneless thud- is that what you prefer???

Funny, that Persip makes such statements. Nine out of ten records he played on, he ruined by his invasive, reckless, insensitive, senseless, explosive, overly extroverted drumming.
