  • Are you confused about what the 70mai Pro GPS module actually does and doesn't do? If so, this video will tell you exactly and will provide actual footage of the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) in action. The GPS module costs around US$15, but is it worthwhile for you personally?

      @PhilUKNet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for your comment! I live in southern Thailand. The temperature here never quite reaches 40C, but it gets very close in the hot season. I had concerns about the adhesive that secures the camera being affected by heat, but that hasn't been a problem. Neither have there been any operational problems with the camera caused by heat. I've only been using the camera for a few months, but so far there have been no heat-related problems and I installed it during the hottest part of the year. I always use the car battery to power it, but if you use the internal camera battery (for parking surveillance mode, for example) I understand that excessive heat reduces the life of lithium-ion batteries.

      @@olyusop3890 At the moment I don't think so. The three ADAS functions don't help me and the system doesn't work very reliably. With ADAS switched on it will stay very quiet for a long time and then suddenly wake up. The last firmware update started showing speed and GPS coordinates on videos when viewed on the 70mai Pro, but this still isn't very useful. If they release a further firmware update that displays speed and coordinates on the live view and also shows this information in the image files then it would be useful, but so far that hasn't happened. It's an interesting idea, but GPS tracking isn't available on the 70mai Pro. This feature would need additional hardware and a SIM card. If you need this you could purchase a separate device. After I made this video 70mai released some further firmware updates that made the GPS module a lot more useful. However, I have been unable to download them. I am still using 1.0.5na. I tried to download 1.2.0 and it told me I was at the latest level. I now have 1.3.2 on my phone, but when I try to do a firmware update it says there are no updates. I am stuck on 1.0.5na. With this version you can only see speed and coordinates when you view videos on the camera itself, which isn't much use. If you can download the later firmware and see this information on the actual video the GPS will be a lot more useful. Frustrating.

      Thank you, but ... due to the latest firmware update issued a few days ago ... this information is now out of date! With the new firmware (1.0.5na) you should be able to see latitude, longitude and speed. I was hoping to make a new video to demonstrate this, but since updating the firmware I haven't been able to recalibrate my camera. I've tried about 20 times and calibration fails every time. I'm not sure why.

  • @PhilUKNet
    @PhilUKNet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    IMPORTANT UPDATE: After making this video the manufacturer released a firmware update (1.0.5na) which adds longitude, latitude and speed. I think the update was released on 17 June 2019. There was a lot of criticism about the lack of these features and this update should make a lot of existing users very happy, as well as improving sales. I've actually installed the update, but my 70mai Pro keeps failing calibration and it seems that the new information will appear only when the unit is calibrated. When I get sorted this out I will make a quick video update.
    FURTHER UPDATE: After 5 days trying to get the dash cam to calibrate I gave up, but then it suddenly calibrated itself. Very frustrating, but at least I was able to test the firmware update. Unfortunately, I am disappointed. The longitude/latitude/speed information is only shown when you view videos on the back of the dash cam. This is useless for me. I want to see the information in the live view when I am driving and also on recorded footage, but it isn't in either of these places. Hopefully, 70mai will release another firmware update to address these issues.
    My video of the LATEST FIRMWARE UPDATE can be seen here:

    love your criticism of the ADAS feature with regards to Thai roads.
    One question though, is it possible to change the notification sound?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid it's not. Another person asked whether it is possible to turn the voice notifications off, but it's not. You can only turn off the individual ADAS features. When you use voice control to record an emergency video or take a still photo it gives you voice confirmation. It does the same to tell you if there has been a parking event or if the battery is low. It isn't possible to turn off or change the sound of any of these notifications. All you can do is turn the volume down, which you can do via the app but not on the camera.
      It doesn't make me feel good criticising Thai roads, but the truth of the matter is that driving standards are shocking and there is essentially no law enforcement. For me personally, it's the worst aspect of living in Thailand. There are minor annoyances that I can live with, but the appalling driving standards result in thousands of needless lost lives each year that could easily be avoided if there was a will to improve things.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The user manual doesn't specify a minimum speed for this function, but the minimum speed for calibration is 20 km/h. I would assume that the minimum speed for this function is the same. I certainly haven't heard it at low speed, for example, in car parks when there are cars just ahead. I've only heard it on the open road, but I don't know what the minimum speed is exactly. 20km/h is just a guess based on the minimum speed required for calibration.

    The most important feature of the GPS module is the time, position and speed readout. If you are involved in an incident by viewing the video on the screen or downloading the video in the app on your phone or it's possible to see the time, date, location and speed of the event. This is why I purchased the module. This upgrade for the pro was released in June 2019.

    Just a question, I also bought this adas module a while ago, but 2 months it kind of shot itself and does not conned properly. You would need to push the camera into the module for it to recognise it.

      Robert Hoon I don't see why not. It will work whichever way you point it. However, you will have separate videos for back and front. Using it as a rear camera will confuse ADAS so you won't need the GPS module for a rear camera. For parking surveillance it will be a lot better to have cameras front and rear.

      Hello Ahmet. You are right about ADAS. At times it seems as if it has gone to sleep. With it switched on I don't hear anything for a long time and then, suddenly, it starts warning me about everything as if it has just woken up. I don't know the reason why.
      Neither can I help with your second question. The left to right position of the camera is fixed unless you move the electrostatic sticker on the windscreen, which isn't convenient. The up/down position can be adjusted and I have adjusted mine so that I can just see the car hood at the bottom of the screen without too much sky at the top.
      Thanks for commenting and sorry I can't help you more. There are a few strange anomalies with the 70mai for which I don't have answers.

      This is how it's designed. You only see the coordinates and speed when viewing videos on the camera and the app. This information doesn't appear in videos that you download to your computer. For a long time I was hoping that 70mai would fix it with a firmware upgrade, but that never happened. Later cameras have this feature and they just seem to want customers to buy new cameras.

      You don't see it, you hear it. It warns you of three things - changing lane, being too close to the vehicle ahead, and when the car in front of you in traffic starts to move. It is fairly accurate, but if you are a competent driver you should know these things already and not need to be reminded. Whenever it tells me something I know already, so I don't actually find it that useful. Thanks for your comment!

    Ordered today will arrive Monday, I’m gonna use it as rear dashcam, in the front I have Aukey DR02. Do you think the ADAS can be useful in anyway if I use it as rear dashcam, maybe it still can see when I change lane and is gonna say vehicle ahead when someone is tailgating, but I’m not sure.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just looked at a video for the new 70mai 4k dash cam. That one can accept input for a rear dash cam, but apart from the higher resolution (which seems to be overkill) the features look similar to the 80mai Pro. I've received other comments from people planning to use the 70mai Pro as a rear camera, but I'm not sure how ADAS performs. It's all designed for a front facing camera. Presumably, if someone is tailgating it will tell you that you are close to the vehicle ahead. When you are in traffic and take off, if there is a stationary car behind it will probably tell you that the car in front is moving. I'm not sure how it will handle lane departure while facing backwards. If you find out it would be useful if you could give me an update later!

    Hello first of all great video. I haven’t bought this product yet because of this one feature that i’m a bit skeptic about. There’s this one feature indicated on the website that you can check your car via dash cam ‘Anywhere, Anytime’. In my understanding you could check your car even if you’re very far/away from it (i.e. left your car in a parking lot or your friend borrowed your car) Is there any such feature like that? Hoping for your answer. Cheers.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't seen this feature advertised. It may be applicable to other 70mai devices, but it certainly doesn't apply to my 70mai Pro. To be able to check any time from anywhere you would need to connect the Dash Cam to the Internet via the mobile phone network and therefore the device would need a slot for a SIM card. My camera doesn't have a slot for a SIM card.
      When I bought my dash cam one of the adverts I saw said it had a time lapse feature, but it doesn't. The other confusing thing is that my 70mai Dash Cam Pro seems to have disappeared. They sent me an e-mail recently that included the 70mai Dash Cam Lite, the 70mai Mini Dash Cam, and the 70mai Smart Dash Cam 1S. There was no mention of the 70mai Dash Cam Pro. As I said above, another 70mai model may have this feature, but not my one. Check to see if the model you are interested in can accept a SIM card.

      Thanks for your comment. I was very confused about the GPS information being written to the video. Someone left a comment a while ago saying that with firmware version 1.0.6na it was written to video. However, I downloaded this firmware version and I still have no speed or GPS coordinates on the video. I only see this information when I view videos on the camera. I don't know why he can see it, but I can't. Maybe he is using another model camera? To stitch the videos together you will need some kind of video editing program. I used to use the Microsoft one that came with Windows, but now I use Adobe Premiere Pro. These programs are quite confusing at first, but after some practice it's quite easy to join videos together.

    Thank you for your video. One would think if a module is called GPS, it will provide GPS location info. This module should have been called ADAS module. It is my mistake I did not make proper research about this add-on before I bought it - it is totally useless. A driver, that need to be told by a camera, that he should move his ass or start braking, should not be driving at all.
    One question please: did you find out how to set the camera to start auto-recording when I turn my engine on? Because I have to start my cam manually and I usually forget about it.

      @PhilUKNet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree totally with all your comments! It confused me and it has confused a lot of other people. Yes, the term ADAS module would be a lot less confusing. Regarding your question, the camera starts recording when the external power supply is switched on. If you connect it to a 12V circuit that is only live when the ignition is on the camera should stop and start with the engine. I have mine connected to a circuit that is live all the time and I use a switch in the circuit to manually turn it on and off. I did it this way so that there would still be power with the ignition off if I wanted to use the parking surveillance feature. Thanks for your comment.

Thirdly, every time I return to the car and open and close the door it triggers a parking event so then I have to look to see if there are any genuine parking events.

      The paper user instructions supplied with the camera say very little. There is better information at the following link: help.70mai.asia/278.html
      The manufacturer will be obliged to have lots of legal disclaimers otherwise people will be trying to sue after an accident saying that the ADAS didn't work or something.
      The internal battery is only small and will only provide about 10-15 minutes of recording time. After enabling parking surveillance mode in the menu turn the dash cam off. While it is monitoring without recording it won't use a lot of power and when it detects a collision it will record for 90 seconds. It should therefore be able to last more than 24 hours provided there aren't many collisions.
      You can connect the unit to a power source that is live when the ignition is off or connect it directly to the car battery to extend the amount of time the unit will work in parking surveillance mode.

      Annoying, isn't it? You can only see speed and coordinates when videos are played back on the dash cam, which isn't much use. They could add this feature with a firmware update, but they never did. You do get this information on the new 70Mai 4k dash cam and someone told me you also get it on the 70Mai Lite, but not the Pro. Why? I don't know. It's the manufacturer's decision.

      @@Lasmanit I agree. If I was involved in an accident that wasn't my fault I would want to give the police and insurance video evidence and I would want speed shown in the recorded video. I'm sure this can be implemented with a firmware change but, as I say, 70mai never did it for the Pro. The new 70mai 4k cam has the feature but that model doesn't have voice control, which I find really useful with the Pro. 70mai gets close with a lot of things, but never quite delivers the complete package.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Provided that you drive at a speed in excess of 20 km/h (which we all do most of the time - even in town), that there is good light, and there are clear road markings, it 'should' calibrate within approximately 5-8 minutes. However, I've had very inconsistent results. Earlier this year, after installing firmware version 1.0.5na, I needed to recalibrate and it took 4 days! On other occasions it has calibrated almost immediately. On some occasions it has failed calibration repeatedly, but the ADAS starts giving me warnings as if it has calibrated successfully. When I tried for 4 days I drove up and down a road that had just had new lines painted and the light was excellent, however, it refused to calibrate. I don't know why. It can be very frustrating, but just keep trying. And obviously, you need to follow the instructions regarding aligning the camera properly. If it won't calibrate you could try adjusting the angle of the camera slightly.

      One possible problem is that when installing or trying to update the app it says that the latest version isn't compatible with my device (an iPhone) and it installs the last compatible version. If there is where I download the firmware 1.0.5?"
      Firstly, I am confused. I'm currently using 1.0.6na and I DON'T have longitude and latitude in the video. Quite a few other people have said the same thing. I am therefore confused as to why you can see this information in the video with 1.0.5. Is your version 1.0.5na (North America) or another version for another geography? There are several versions, ie, ru for Russia, eu for Europe, etc.
      Secondly, I'm afraid that I don't know how to downgrade the software. The firmware update process only allows you to upgrade to later levels. There are no options to revert to a previous level.
      Thirdly, the app on my phone has just started telling me that 1.0.9na is available. I was going to update the firmware from 1.0.6na, but after your comment I am now reluctant to do so in case it introduces problems that weren't there before.
      I'm sorry I can't help. As I've said on my videos many times, I quite like the basic features of this dash cam but I've had lots of problems with the firmware update process.
