- The "Cool British Singles from 1967" officially came to after covering and revisiting each month of 1966. Now, it's time to do the same with 1966. Here are some cool British singles released in January 1966.

Amazing to see a young David Bowie turn up in January 1966 . I've always considered him a 70s and beyond artist. Clearly he was schlepping around the music biz for quite a few years before breaking through.
YP, this series on Cool British Singles has brought me wonderful memories of where I was and what I was doing at the time. I was a wee lass of 11 in ‘66, but the memories are vivid and warm. To partially quote the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, “…music is how we decorate time.” Oh, how mine has been decorated with such great music!

Great ending with “I’m rowed out” by the Eyes. Many great groups didn’t get the acclaim they deserved. Another bandj floating around at that time was Sons of Fred. Lead guitarist Mike Hutchinson was out of this world.

I was born in 1967, and have liked a lot of songs from the mid-60s with the Mod sound since the early 70s. One of my uncles would often play his 45s of a lot of these songs. I appreciate these music history lessons. Learning is lifelong.
I was living in the States in 1966 but I remember it being a great year for music just the same...just non stop great music on the radio..
The tunes you showcased here I got into later on.

Wow, some tremendous Mod sounds from early Bowie, The Small Faces and The Eyes! Great story of the song "Think" by Farlowe and The Stones! I've always loved that Stones' song with fuzz guitar! And some cool R&B by The Downliners Sect! January 1966, an exciting month! Btw amazing footage!

Wonderful stuff. I'm happy to say that I have all the Zombies and Small Faces singles on CD, but it's all worth having. Throw in the Easybeats and the Yardbirds and the Pretty Things and you have a golden age.

@@grahampaulkendrick7845 I agree, but I couldn't buy much as I did not have the money. It's better to have their albums on CD because of better sound quality, stereo mixes, and bonus tracks, some previously unreleased but from the album timeline.

I always said 1966 was the best year for music and this proves it.
Another superb audio-visual doc back to that magical time. "Bunny Lake Is Missing," directed by veteran cinematic auteur Otto Preminger, is one of my favorite films from the '60s. Who knew that you could fold the venerable Laurence Olivier, not to mention a collection of extraordinary British character actors (Noël Coward, Martita Hunt, Finlay Currie, Lucie Mannheim) into an edge-of-the-seat missing-child mystery, all set in "Swinging London" at its peak in the mid-'60s, with songs specifically commissioned, written, and performed by one of London's most magnetically eccentric bands? And with two attractive young American actors (Carol Lynley and Keir Dullea, the latter soon to become most famous as Dave "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that" Bowman in "2001: A Space Odyssey") rounding out the cast? The Zombies (who perform to this day in a latter-day lineup, with Blunstone and Argent gigging with a varying crew of supporting musicians) have always been one of the most underrated bands of the British invasion, and "Odessey [sic] and Oracle" has only in recent decades been recognized as the masterpiece it is.
BTW, I assume your journey back to the next month, February 1966, will soon be in the works. I hope you mention the opening that month of the legendary King's Road shop Granny Takes A Trip. As much as the original Psychedelic Shop (which opened just after New Year's 1966) on Haight Street, San Francisco, GTAT was a harbinger of its time and of the promise that adult consciousness could be something other than humdrum workaday ambition punctuated by anxiety, fear, and hate. Thank you again for everything.
I love "Bunny Lake Is Missing" as well. Great film.
Keir Dullea's performance in Bunny Lake Is Missing is strangely compelling. He manages to underact and overact at the same time which is good for the character he's portraying and makes the big reveal more unsettling.
Some excellent bands here and despite their respective releases not charting as well as hoped at the time, the music was quality. Zombies, Traffic and Small Faces are but a few timeless groups and as for Steve Marriott, the man was a force of nature! I always thought Bowie’s music was pretty ordinary until the fabulous Mick Ronson came on board. As always Yesterday’s Papers, you’ve afforded we music-lovers a fascinating glimpse into the music of my youth, thank you kindly.

@@YesterdaysPapers …….Mick Ronson was phenomenal and the earlier Bowie albums are unquestionably my favourites. To be perfectly honest, after Mick left, I lost interest. Bowie was always innovative and inventive but I don’t think there’s much disputing, Ronno elevated the music. I didn’t see Bowie until the Glass Spider tour (mid-‘80’s) and even with Peter Frampton on lead-guitar, I found the concert underwhelming. It all felt unnecessarily “theatrical”. Apart from his solo output, Mick worked tirelessly behind the scenes collaborating with so many better-known artists but he never really received the kudos he deserved imo. To this day, Mick’s outro on Moonage Daydream gives me chills!

What an absolutely terrific month for singles. My fav Dusty 45, Farlowe, The Eyes(though their 1st single is unbeatable), Bowie and the Downliners Sect. Incredible. And of course, a superb Zombies A and B side.
Definitely a brilliant month for singles, Maurice! And February 1966 was even better so stay tuned for next month's episode, amazing month.
I enjoy these very thorough examinations of releases by the month. They are a nice change from the ones where musical celebrities judge new releases. They are often given the oddest bunch of songs, some of which were surely put in as a joke. Those are fun, but these give a truer picture of the pop scene.
Holy shit we have come full circle, albeit I wish you did 68 as there were some nice singles out there. Pictures of matchstikmen, care of cell 44. But blessed be none the less, that we look at the birth of psychedelia

So interesting to see early Dave Mason and David Bowie. I wonder if you'd consider doing some segments on the "Hamburg" scene in the early/mid-sixties. So many bands played in Germany then--it'd be fascinating to see and hear more about that!

@@YesterdaysPapers A good idea, but it is finding the live material, if it still exists. A lot of Ready Steady Go UK footage no longer exists. But there was a huge market in Holland for mid sixties British bands, including ones that didn't make it here, like The Pretty Things, THEM and The Downliners Section.

Another great month from my favourite feature on one of my favourite YuTube channels. Every disc a winner (even the two cash-in Beatles covers.) I'm happy to say that in the last month I've seen both Chris Farlowe and the Zombies playing live. The former with Colosseum, the latter as a duo with just Colin and Rod. It's also clear that there had been plenty of 'way out' British singles released in 1965 (which really should merit a review at some point in the not-toop distant future.) It’s a shame that a lot of Bowie fans hate his earliest recorded material from 1966-67.
It really was mostly pretty decent, especially given that he was only 19 going on 20 at the time. Yes it’s very of it’s time and can be a bit corny but it was also no less avant-garde than anything he did in the periods they love.
I came across it once. It is all because those who say that are only familiar with early seventies onward, and therefore will only go for the later more familiar Bowie. Anything from as far back as the mid sixties sounds dated to them.

I was born in 1978 so almost all of Bowie’s catalogue is dated to me. Doesn’t stop me loving most of it. But I suppose not everyone is like me.
@@danieleyre8913 Bowie did have some good stuff in his earliest days. "Can't Help Thinking About Me" is one of the best along with "The London Boys" and especially "The Gospel According To Tony Day"

I spent all my pocket money in the record shop on anything i liked & most of the singles never were hits but i had an amazing singles collection
Wish i still had it, there were some brilliant records
I was off to gigs & festivals back in the day, not to oggle the band but dig the music!
Im still the same today & adore hearing these obscure recordings
I used to have this LP by a band called Group Therapy which i loved & have no idea where my album went but i did hear it became a rare collectors item
Loved Chris Farlowe, Steve Marriot, Long John Baldray,
Ive recently been listening to some of the old Smokie albums
( which i hated at the time, hated boppy pop)
However ive really enjoyed some album tracks from Smokie.
Chris Norman was a really good singer!
I used to write pieces from music reviews and gigs way back & got to see some brilliant bands
The music festivals were classics

Always nice to see St. Louis Union get a mention. They're one of my favourite Mod groups from the mid sixties. They were house band at the Twisted Wheel before the venue switched to strictly vinyl
Steve Marriott and David Bowie were good mates at the time, they discussed forming
a duo, pre Small Faces, and calling themselves 'David and Goliath.'
The Downliners Sect were extremely popular here in Sweden. Their version of Little Egypt was a big hit here.
No idea Bowie was such a mod. BTW, Scout the Husky loves your show.

It’s fascinating to see the usual mix of bands that I knew at the time, bands that I’ve never heard of before and the early days of musicians that I came to know much better later on. In this case, Chris Farlowe who I first heard on the Colosseum Live album.

Fascinating - I was UK born but the family moved to America in 1953, when I was 5! Interesting as to what I would have been listening to through my youth! I recognize none of your picks! Peace

Fascinating glimpse, near the end, of the old Club Noreik at the junction of Tottenham High Road and Seven Sisters Road. Used to be a cinema which closed down in 1960. I never went there (not really my sort of scene) but must have passed it dozens of times when travelling by bus to and from Stamford Hill.

Rugby shirts with giant eyes and classic mod sounds - loved the Eyes since I picked up the original EP way back in 1980.

Wow, I didn't realize you had already gone back to January '66! Excellent work, as usual--it's fun moving the clock back a year and revisiting the heights of mod!! David Bowie, Small Faces, Eyes, Downliner's Sect are all great and I'd never heard that Revolution single before. As you can probably guess what the "66" in my screen name stands for, I'm *terribly* excited to run through the year and watch mod transform itself into psych, with awesome sounds all along the way. February should bring masterpieces by The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, The Hollies, Peter & Gordon, Dave Dee, The Action, The Troggs, The Craig, and more!! It was an utter bonanza of rock goodness--I can't wait!! I can think of no-one better suited to taking us on this journey than you.
A lot of artists and groups your featuring would never be known to most young people at the time. There was so much music being made! One great record that you missed that was a hit single, Inside Looking Out by the Animals, there’s a great live version on You Tube made in 1966 on a U.S. tv show!
The Animals' single was released in the UK in February 66 so it will be featured in next month's episode.
David Bowie came to Margate to see a band called Oliver Twist and the Lower Third and ended up replacing the singer.
The name was also shortened. I’ve got a photo of them from those days. He was brilliant.
Never understood how The Downliners Sect's "Glendora" managed to slip through the cracks.

I really liked this. The David Bowie song is one of my all-time favorites by him. The only other song I recognized here was the Zombies song. What crossed my mind with the Eyes is they seemed to be better known for their mod fashion sense than their music. I would like to have one or two of those shirts.

Does anyone else remembers the poster ads on the front of London Transport red double decker buses which appeared in July '65 upon the release of the Eyes' debut single? On the left of the front destination board one poster said 'The Eyes' and on the right a matching poster said: 'Have It'. I'm wondering if that is mentioned in the article featured at 5:33 under the heading 'London Transport'. I only guessed the meaning of the ad about forty years later as I was a thirteen year old schoolboy and I didn't hear about them until the mid-seventies.

Thank you, Y.P.! interesting singles... David Bowie's single was surprisingly good, as he was very hit or miss in the day. The rampant graft and payola in the industry, as you can see from the story of his manager placing the single, was appalling. The Eyes "When the night comes" is nearly as strong a Mod record as The Who might be doing then. Very respectable presence. God, those drums! The Zombies, one of my favorite bands, great song "Just out of reach" should have been the "A" side, nothing against "Remember you", which is a terrific song. Just would have been more commercial. Their promo for "Bunny Lake is missing" is a funny snort and a half! Same with the Small Faces record. "Sha-la-lee" is a great sounding record, from a superb band, but a formula-ridden, crappy song. Much better flip side! Downliner's Sect? Great sounding band. But a sound on its way out, unfortunately. The Hellions were like like a lot of bands, then. They sounded professional enough, but nothing to distinguish them. Once Jim Capaldi and Dave Mason got up with Steve Winwood, however.. We all know that was magic in the making!

I'm so glad that you have gone right back to January 1966, as hopefully we will hear more pre-1967 Psychedelia as this year progresses month at a time. Great to hear The Eyes and Downliners. The Downliners released a single later this year written by Graham Gouldman
I noticed you did not stick entirely to early Psychedelia here with then-new releases by Dusty Springfield who I adore, and Sandie Shaw who I'm afraid I was no fan of, although I did like three of her previous singles, Girl Don't Come, Long Live Love, and Message Understood, but hated Puppet On A String.
The single you included by The Revolution was their soulless UK version of a song originally recorded in the States by The Invitations, who also recorded the original of Skiing In The Snow. But the B side of this Revolution single Shades Of Blue, they originally released on the B side of one of their earlier singles as The Hellion.
Virtually all of these were obvious to me. But it was good to hear snippets of them. Another of your great videos, thanks.

The problem with Sandie Shaw is that she recorded lots of mediocre tunes but I think the good stuff is really good. I recently picked up a compilation featuring most of her singles from 1964-67 and most of those songs were really strong. Great 60s pop. I hate "Puppet on a String", though.
@@YesterdaysPapers If you are that interested in Sandie Shaw, she has three download releases, Sings In French, Sings In Italian, and Sings In German, all containing songs she also sang in English I think, but re-recording the vocals over the same pre-recorded backing tracks. Dusty recorded many songs back in the sixties in various languages. This was common during the sixties.

If Bowie was already known as David Bowie in January 1966 that dispels the rumor that he changed his name to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees
Davy Jones was already reasonably well known by that point through stage and tv, including a Tony nomination, and was getting a big push from Columbia, Bowie would have been aware of him.
Bowie was very prescient indeed, and he knew before anyone else that months later, there was to be a group called The Monkees who were then to release their debut single, and they were to have a Davy Jones. So this Davy Jones quickly changed his name to avoid this forthcoming confusion. The lord up above sent him down this message.
Only up to the Zombies and it's a helluva month so far. So many emergent legends.
He was a square by Downliners Sect that would go well on the soundtrack of a Tarantino film.

In that still of Bowie on Top Of The Pops, that guitarist on the right resembles Jagger, I had to double take😂, even though I knew it wasn’t him
"When The Night Falls" (The Eyes) has remained with me for decades. Talk about "raw" and "edgy" sound! Likewise, for "I'm Rowed Out" (again The Eyes). It's great to know that The Who and The Kinks had an influence on other artists at the time. It was great to see The Small Faces and The Zombies in this video, as well. The mention of Sandy Shaw and Dusty Springfield was a nice touch. Many thanks, Yesterday's Papers.

People under 30, do you listen to classic rock from 1955-1980? That was 60 years ago!
For an experiment, ask people that grew up then, if they were listening to music from the 1890s, and watch the looks they give you.

It's unusual to see a year-date on a label expressed as "Recording First Published...." as late as 1966 (4:39) when EMI stopped using that method of year-date expression in 1964 and PYE a year later. I'd imagine CBS and Decca ceased using "Recording First Published...." about the same time as EMI.
In Ivor Raymonde's surname, the 'e' on the end is *not* silent and takes an 'ay' sound (8:10)
