@kaizokuo5850 THoHH is "The Haunting of Hill House". It was Flanagen's first Netflix series and absolutely worth a watch. It's the series that got everyone hooked.
Weirdly enough, in spite of the more extreme modernization and sexification, House of Usher is, by far and wide, order of magnitudes more faithful to Poe's original collection of short stories than Hill House or Bly Manor ever were to their books. It paid to remember the short stories while watching.
I think I would describe this series as a love letter to Poe. Not only does it involve some of his characters (Dupin, the Ushers) but it references so many more (Fortunato, Prospero, Lenore, Annabelle Lee, The Raven) and his stories (The Raven, The Gold Bug, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontillado, The Mask of the Red Death, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher) and quote so much of his poetry, but even a lot of the themes that it eventually deals with (betrayal, loss, insanity, the inability to trust oneself or one's reality, trying to maintain normalcy while inside you're falling apart) become prominent in later episodes. The others feel like someone adapting a story to make a hit, this feels like someone paying homage to his literary inspiration.
Edgar Allan Poe was my first “adult author.” I’m 47 now, and stories have been giving me the chills since I was 12 years old. While there were many classic adaptations of his stories (like the ones with Vincent Price), in the modern era they are virtually nonexistent. I love what Flanagan has done here: he maintains the heart, soul, dread and themes of Poe; it’s clearly a love letter to his work, but he freshens it up and puts such a great spin on the tales. And his stable of actors have never been better. Carla Gugino and Mark Hamill are certainly highlights.
Ha, likewise! My mom told me as a kid how she used to read the stories and they would scare her, so f course I had to read them too. I was expecting devils, zombies, gruesome ghoulies, but instead I got something even scarier: the evil of an intrusive thought, the weight of depression, the fear of theetering at the edge of madness. The things the priest says during the church funeral was very haunting and went well with what Roderick Usher was seeing. Pretty sure it’s a clue about the mystery. I was hooked on every word😰
Is the poem ' Spirits of the Dead ' by Edgar Allan Poe. All the poems recited in this series are by him since the whole thing is inspired by his "universe".
"The names are very fancy", Well all of the names are characters from Poe's stories or poems. Roderick and Madeleine Usher from 'The Fall of the House of Usher', Arthur Pym from the novel 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket', C.Auguste Dupin is the first detective in fiction and appears in several stories, Frederick is from 'Metzengerstein: A Tale in Imitation of the German' Tamerlane was a real Turco-Mongolian conqueror Poe wrote a poem about, Victorine Lafourcade appears in 'The Premature Burial', Prince Prospero is from the 'Mask of the Read Death', Camille l'Espanaye is from 'The Murders on the Rue Morgue', Annabel Lee and The Raven (which I'm pretty sure is also Verna in annagram form) are both famous poems, Lenore is a poem but also appears in 'The Raven', Pluto the cat from 'The Black Cat', Napoleon I believe is from 'The Spectacles' and Alessandra from 'Politian' but I could be wrong, Morelle from 'Morella' a horror story, William Wilson another poem. Other interesting names are: Amontillado wine from 'The Cask of Amontillado' Ligodon I think it's inspired by 'Ligeia', Eliza was the name of Poe's mother and the middle name of his wife. Rufus Wilmort Griswold and also Longfellow were both rivals of Poe. And I probaby forgot stuff. Editing now to add 'The Gold- Bug', ironically the last one I read and I forgot about it.
My favourite bit of foreshadowing appears if you have a keen ear or if you have subtitles on. It repeats in a later episode, but the reopening shot of the wall with the song “Another Brick in the Wall” is so incredible.
I got through episode 2 and then was fully addicted and binged through the whole thing. I’m so sad it’s over so I’m excited to experience it again though y’all!
after just finishing the series and watching the first episode again with you guys, im noticing SO many things. that's probably my favourite thing about Flanagan's work.
Get ready guys this one is unhinged! You're gonna be saying "what the heck" ALOT lol. We loved it, binged it in a day. The cast and acting is stellar ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
Finished it earlier today. Definitely my favorite of the Flanaverse so far. Loved the theme, like a whodunit/gothic/supernatural mash up with brilliant uses of Poe's work at every corner. Episode titles, character names. It's great to see how creative it is. Being so invested in the previous works of the Flanaverse I felt what seemed to be a wave of nostalgia from a lot of my favorite actors returning for this show. It kept me guessing how each episode would end and the message the show gives is clear as day but executed perfectly.
Yeay!! It's not spooky season without a new Mike Flanagan show, and it's not spooky season without you guys reacting to it! You're in for a treat! Personally, Midnight Mass is still my favourite, but The Fall of the House of Usher is quite frankly a piece of art and I feel like I need to rewatch it because there are, as always, so many details that flew right by me on the first watch.
You ever hear of a revenant before? Basically, if someone is near death with some serious unfinished business, they CANNOT die until they see it through. In this case, Roderick and Madeline's mom couldn't die until she took out the bastard living just down the road from her and her family. Just keep it in mind moving forward. :D
This is the best show I've ever seen on Netflix. Hands down. Its exquisite. Keep in mind the real life Sacklers, Purdue Pharma, and OxyContin are the frame on which Flanagan lays all of this. Its absolutely genius.
this shows is so good. it makes you think you know where it's going when you actually don't, flanagan killed it once again. looking forward to watching you guys react to the entire series 👏🏽
So glad you guys are watching this! No spoilers but the horror is a bit slow in the beginning episodes, so be patient, but towards the end, the show is magnificent. You won't be disappointed.
you have no idea how excited I am to see your reactions to this show. I binged it in one night and honestly I can say it's my 2nd favorite Flanagan series, after Hill House.
What I love with episode 1 is that Mrs. Dudley killed Mr. Dudley (the housekeeper couple in Haunting of Hill House)=(Roderick & Madeline's mother and father).
Binged this series in the first 24 hours of its release. It's so good and very different than what I'm used to seeing from mike flanagan and i have no complaints, truly a masterpiece! Definitely my second favorite project of his (the first being hill house of course)
You guys will love this show. I binged it all in one day. Glad to see you are reacting to it!! All of Mike Flanagan's work is amazing. Kind of sucks Mike isnt making anything else for Netflix
It freaking Edgar Allen Poe ! Every main character's name is from an Edgar Allen Poe story! The prosecutor is Auguste Dupin, the Usher's lawyer is Arthur Gordan Pym, both the main characters of Poe stories. The kid's names are the names the names of the people who die in Poe stories (Heh Heh Heh) .The title of the Show is an Edgar Allen Poe story! and tonight' episode is a line from The Raven! "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore- While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door- Only this and nothing more.” "
So excited for this. I've only watched the first episode so far and was really impressed. Really happy to see the great Mary McDonnell joining the Flanagan acting troop!
Fall of the House of Usher was written by Poe. As was the title stories for each episode. It's pretty much Flanagan's love letter to Poe. He likes to craft his stories around famous horror authors (I think King is his favorite).
I binged all of it in one go the day it came out. Did not plan on doing that, but that's how it worked out. 😅 Great show and great reaction, I look forward to the rest!❤
I binged it yesterday. I didn't find it scary at all but I love hearing the long conversations. Each episode is based on a Edgar Allen Poem story. Of course, the cast is familiar and all of them do a very nice job. That said, Midnight Mass is still my favorite Mike Flanagan show.
I have to let this show marinate in my mind for a bit. I'm not quite sure how I would grade it yet. Midnight Mass is also my favorite work of his, but I do really enjoy these family tragedy stories.
I binged all 8 eps in one sitting and I loved every spooky minute of it 🫣 no spoilers but Steven is gonna have a rough time editing this show for youtube 😂
spoiler/fyi: this is going to be Mike Flannagan's last netflix show sadly as his contract is up and he's going to be with Amazon Prime Video now where he's already working on a new project called The Dark Tower!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully he never stops making these...
Flannigan is the goat of horror shows. I know it's really early to say but he has always gotten me emotionally invested in his shows. I never would have thought a horror show would bring me to tears. Just like hillhouse, bly manor and midnight mass. Hes doing something completely different and I want more.
I watched the first episode one Saturday night, went to bed, woke up on the Sunday and just ploughed through the rest because I couldn't wait to know what happened. There are so many clever references to "real world" happenings.
I watched this movie on the first day and literally planned my day around getting up early to binge watch it all on the first day. I can’t wait to see you learn more about all of them but especially the women who from day one just seem more sassy and planned Edit: also I like all the Flanagan stuff I’ve seen so far (everything but Oculus and Absentia) so I’m soo looking forward to everything he does in the future because this one is top 3 Flanaverse for me.😊
26:44 You can barely see it, but Mike Flanagan has - once again - hidden the evil mirror from Oculus in the background. There is a better shot of the two siblings together where you can clearly see it hanging on the wall in between them and I always love how Flanagan reuses the thing in all of his movies and series. If not completely, he uses parts of it (like how he uses only the bottom half of the mirror for the bedframe in Gerald's Game).
Never finished Midnight Mass, still have to find the right mood to be in. So far Bly Manor was my favorite of these, loved Dani and Jamie so much, with this coming out, both shows share first place cause they're so very different yet amazing in their own right. The way Flanagan "queered it up" even more is amazing :D
Great reaction! Young Madeline dressed as the 1920s flapper in the 1979 flashback was played by Willa Fitzgerald, aka Roscoe from the _Reacher_ series. 😁
@@mandelbot5318 True, but I was going to wait until a reaction to an episode that actually showed him to point that out. I've seen on occasion reactors that consider knowing that a particular actor will show up to be spoilers, so I try avoiding that.
watched it in a single day, and it's the fucking brilliant way to introduce E. A. Poe's stories and poems to 21st century audience, if you read them, you know the outcome immediately when you see the episode's name but even if you didn't, you still want more
YAY! I was hoping you guys would react to this! I loved your reactions to Hill House and Bly Manor so I was hoping you'd be here for this one...what a ride so far!
Great show! There are a TON of Edgar Allan Poe references. Some overt, some more hidden. Also, what's the over/under for how many times Steven gives Nikki the "What the f... ?!" look?
The scene with the acid falling on the ravers was one of the most horrifying and disturbing scenes I’ve ever seen. It stayed with me for a while. I watched the whole series in like 1 or 2 days. They started off with a bang.
I love how Mr. Flanagan was able to weave Mr. Poe's best and not-so-known works in this show. And even if the viewer is not familiar with the literature.. it's done in such a way that those who had not read a single Edgar Allan Poe work has something to love (or be spooked) about it. :-) Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
It's funny that you mentioned how good the casting was for the younger versions of the characters. Because this is like my third channel for reaction videos to this that I'm watching. And obviously I watched the show. And until you mentioned that I totally forgot that the younger versions were different actors different people. I think the story just had me so absorbed and the casting was so good just completely went over my head that they're different actors I was like no those are the same people.
cruised the comments and didn't see anyone point it out-sorry if I missed it-but he didn't say the trial was the last time the family was together. He said it was the DAY they were last together (the dinner happens that night, ergo all still the same day). Also, its 6 kids with 5 women, not five wives, there is a difference :P I am only on episode 4, looking forward to finishing tonight and watching you watch it all! Great show.
I started watching this last night, only made it to ep 2 but now I'll watch with you guys, I've done that with shows, I couldn't watch but end up watching it here, so here we go.....
After you watch the series, go back and try to guess which actors in some of the smaller part were in other Flanagan shows. I figured out one of the actors (Annabel). She was so different than on Hill house! I ended up going over to IMDb, and looking at all the other actors. Look for the actress that plays the youngest Madelyn .
See! This is why when I can't get into a show then watch it with you both, I get a different vibe from it and actually enjoy it, so this is the way I'll be watching this one....let's goooooooo 😊❤
I love this show so much and have watched all of it in two days so seeing your reaction to it now was amazing and grate reaction as always Can't wait to see you reacting to the others because they just get more and more intense as time goes on. Young Rodrick is the actor of Riley from Midnight Mass and he was also the doctor in Mike's show that he did before this one called The Midnight Club which also stars the actress of Rodrick's young wife and Camille's female assistant as well. The actor of Leo is the one that plays the one that Hannah liked in Bly Mannor and also the cop in Midnight Mass, the actress of the granddaughter is the one that played Abra the special girl that Danny helped in the Doctor Sleep movie, Then there is the actress of Hannah herself of course and Fredrick is the actor of the father in Haunting of hill house and he has been in all the others too. The actress of the woman they are scared of is of course the oen that played the mother in Haunting of Hill house and the one telling the story in Bly Mannor as well. The actress of Rodrick and Madaline's mother is the one that played the maid in Hill house and also the doctor in Midnight Mass and the actor of the one she killed was the one that in Haunting of hill house played her husband and also the guy that shot the girl in Midnight Mass. It's interesting to see how much he uses the same actors over again and mixes them up with new ones as well oh and Carl Lumbly the one that plays the lawyer here played the ghost that Danny talks to in Doctor Sleep.
Young Madeline (the actress) also is the main character of the first 2 seasons of the Scream TV series, which is really good and you should react to it.
Thank you for your reaction. Mike Flanagan has done it again. This is a masterpiece, another in his adaptations. He has honored, truly honored Edgar Allan Poe. Some things to keep in mind while watching this episode: Roderick (Bruce Greenwood, originally Frank Langella) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) are two characters from Poe's 1839 short story, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. As in this Netflix series, they are brother and sister in the original work. A close reading of Poe's work suggests that there is something incestuous going on between the pair. A careful viewing of the series strongly vibes with this. Note how they sleep in the same bed from youth--not necessarily demanding this. But watching the series with this in mind helps viewers to better understand the dynamics between them. The Great Carl Lumbly plays Le Chevalier C. Auguste Dupin, the protagonist of three works by Poe: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1841), "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" (1842), and "The Purloined Letter" (1844). The first of these works is the first detective story we know of--Poe created that genre. Without C. Auguste Dupin there would be no Sherlock Holmes from Arthur Conan Doyle and no Hercule Poirot from Agatha Christie. So it's no exaggeration to say also that without Edgar Allan Poe, there is no Batman or DC (Detective Comics). The mysterious character named Verna (Carla Gugino) has an interesting name. It is an anagram referring to perhaps the most famous poem of Poe's: VERNA RAVEN
There is also the fact that Roderick and Madeline dress up as Gatsby and Daisy for the New Year's Eve, which is both a hint of the suggested incestuous tones and of them crossing any moral thresholds for money.
Wow! I didn't know you guys were watching this show!?! I absolutely loved it! I read the book many years ago, & I loved that too! I'm gonna catch up, so I'll be back after ep4, or ep5... 🤘🤪😁👍
I didn't see Doctor Sleep on your docket - y'all gotta check it out. The young actor who plays Lenore is the co-lead in that and just totally kills it - you'd love it!
I went into this thinking it was just going to be a straight forward adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe short story set in the present day. But it looks like what Flanagan has actually done is blended a lot of different elements from all of Poe's works into one single narrative, which I think is far more interesting. I wouldn't call myself a horror buff, but I like EAP's work so that's always going to pique my interest when it comes to projects like this. The only Flanagan film I've seen other than this is Doctor Sleep, which I actually liked a lot which came as a surprise to me because I am ambivalent towards The Shining in all honesty. I'm only two episodes into this show but i like what I'm seeing so far.
flanagan never misses. I actually clapped at the end of the last episode and I was watching it by myself lol shows just too good. great reaction as always

Napoleon I believe is from 'The Spectacles' and Alessandra from 'Politian' but I could be wrong,
Morelle from 'Morella' a horror story,
William Wilson another poem.
Other interesting names are:
Amontillado wine from 'The Cask of Amontillado'
Ligodon I think it's inspired by 'Ligeia',
Eliza was the name of Poe's mother and the middle name of his wife.
Rufus Wilmort Griswold and also Longfellow were both rivals of Poe.
And I probaby forgot stuff.
Editing now to add 'The Gold- Bug', ironically the last one I read and I forgot about it.
THAT JOKER AT THE END OF THIS EPISODE SCARED THE SHIT OUTTA ME!!! And it looked like something I saw as kid when my tv turned on by itself
Carla Gugino is sending me in this series! She's fantastic
So glad you guys are watching this! No spoilers but the horror is a bit slow in the beginning episodes, so be patient, but towards the end, the show is magnificent. You won't be disappointed.
Wow this is a spoiler dude …
@@DaemonTargaryen13 Saying a show isn't that scary for a few episodes doesn't spoil anything.
2nd episode was fire, my favorite episode and my favorite death scene.
you have no idea how excited I am to see your reactions to this show. I binged it in one night and honestly I can say it's my 2nd favorite Flanagan series, after Hill House.
I devoured this show in one sitting and have been waiting for y'all to check it out. I am so excited!
What I love with episode 1 is that Mrs. Dudley killed Mr. Dudley (the housekeeper couple in Haunting of Hill House)=(Roderick & Madeline's mother and father).
I'm on episode 5 right now and this series is awesome... Every episode is BANGER after BANGER!!!
Kind of sucks Mike isnt making anything else for Netflix
he just switched to prime, shouldn’t change much
This show was the best thing I've seen in a long time, I can't wait to see you guys finish it
It freaking Edgar Allen Poe !
"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore-
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door-
Only this and nothing more.” "
Plus many of the narrations are fragments of Poe's poetry.
So excited for this. I've only watched the first episode so far and was really impressed. Really happy to see the great Mary McDonnell joining the Flanagan acting troop!
awesome show, i binge watched it on the day it released and mike flanagan never dissapoints!
Watching this first episode again knowing everything that comes later is mind blowing. Realizing this show is probably very rewatchable
Great show and great reaction, I look forward to the rest!❤
I just finish binge watch this today and it was awesome. Mike Flanagan did it again. ❤
That house is a real fixer upper. But a few throw cushions, a lick of paint...it'd look great!
I can’t wait to see you learn more about all of them but especially the women who from day one just seem more sassy and planned
Edit: also I like all the Flanagan stuff I’ve seen so far (everything but Oculus and Absentia) so I’m soo looking forward to everything he does in the future because this one is top 3 Flanaverse for me.😊
The guy who plays Frederick is Elliot from E.T. :)
All of the characters' names come from short stories written by Edgar Allen Poe, including but not limited to "The Fall of the House of Usher."
So glad you guys are covering this😂
Loved y’all’s reaction as always!❤ I finished the series up last night… it only gets better!! Mike Flanagan is a boss… he just can’t miss!🙌
In the event you didn't recognize her, 1979 Madeline is played by the same actress who played Roscoe in Reacher season 1.
And the younger Dupin is Malcolm Goodwin, who played Finlay. Two Reacher actors. 😊
@@mandelbot5318 True, but I was going to wait until a reaction to an episode that actually showed him to point that out. I've seen on occasion reactors that consider knowing that a particular actor will show up to be spoilers, so I try avoiding that.
Haha, it's funny that you mention Halloween costumes because I am modeling mine a bit after Verna.
watched it in a single day, and it's the fucking brilliant way to introduce E. A. Poe's stories and poems to 21st century audience, if you read them, you know the outcome immediately when you see the episode's name but even if you didn't, you still want more
Guys I love you so much! I felt alone watching it and then, here you are!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!
YAY! I was hoping you guys would react to this! I loved your reactions to Hill House and Bly Manor so I was hoping you'd be here for this one...what a ride so far!
I kept hearing about this show. Why did I think it had something to do with the R&B legend until JUST now 😂😂😂
Soooo good. I binged it, and now I'm watching it again. It's fantastic.
I was hooked from the beginning. The set, performance, suspense. It has what you want
Steven's face at the Mother Teresa quote was everything haha!
Great show.
Binged this over the weekend. Loved it
I started watching this last night, only made it to ep 2 but now I'll watch with you guys, I've done that with shows, I couldn't watch but end up watching it here, so here we go.....
Yes, definitely superb cast ensemble. Gotta love all the “Flanaganthology” as I call it!
I just finished this show this morning and omfg so good the ending was amazing I loved every bit
All the character names and episode titles are from Poe literature-poems and short stories.
Mike Flanagan is a god straight up.
Also had no idea this was gonna be based on the Sackler family who made Oxycontin
Best series this yr, maybe my fav Flanagan project. Some phenomenal acting in this seriously i cant wait until they get into the later episodes
YESSS i KNEW i could count on you guys for a fast reaction to this
So excited to see you guys react to this show! I think it's my new favorite Mike Flannagan show. It is incredible. I just wish it were real..
After you watch the series, go back and try to guess which actors in some of the smaller part were in other Flanagan shows.
I figured out one of the actors (Annabel). She was so different than on Hill house! I ended up going over to IMDb, and looking at all the other actors. Look for the actress that plays the youngest Madelyn .
if you guys skipped the Midnight Club which Flanagan also did, you should check it out too. you'll see familiar faces there too.
See! This is why when I can't get into a show then watch it with you both, I get a different vibe from it and actually enjoy it, so this is the way I'll be watching this one....let's goooooooo 😊❤
I am glad you star reacting to “The Fall of the House of Usher”
I love it. Was awesome.
We GNAWED through the whole thing in two nights! WORTH IT! I loved MIDNIGHT MASS and HILL HOUSE, but this may be his best series work yet!
Some things to keep in mind while watching this episode:
Roderick (Bruce Greenwood, originally Frank Langella) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) are two characters from Poe's 1839 short story, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.
It is an anagram referring to perhaps the most famous poem of Poe's:
VERNA
RAVEN
There is also the fact that Roderick and Madeline dress up as Gatsby and Daisy for the New Year's Eve, which is both a hint of the suggested incestuous tones and of them crossing any moral thresholds for money.
Gotta watch Midnight Club because a lot of actors from that show in this show. Also, I love that this show is a love letter to Edgar Allan Poe.
I’ve been checking daily since this came out to see if y’all would react to it.
You’re gonna love this show.
Wow! I didn't know you guys were watching this show!?! I absolutely loved it!
I read the book many years ago, & I loved that too!
I'm gonna catch up, so I'll be back after ep4, or ep5...
🤘🤪😁👍
I’m so excited for you both to watch this!! I loved it!
So glad you always react to Mike Flanagan's shows. He never dissapoints.
Halfway through the show right now. If it keeps up this pace I think it'll be my favorite from Flanagan
How does she get her hair like that? Easy she is Mary McDonnell and her hair is magic.😂
so happy to see you two reacting to this! it would be awesome it you two consider watching mr. robot at some point!
flanagan never misses. I actually clapped at the end of the last episode and I was watching it by myself lol shows just too good. great reaction as always
Awesome choice! (was hoping it was time for Ted Lasso... but this also had me binge it ^^)
episodes 2, 3 and 4 are incredible!
