I think it might also be to give a sense of relief to the couple (and to the audience) that the baby is at least alive, given the presence of hungry street dogs near that kuppai thotti. A better (albeit a bit fairy tale-ish) ending might have been, if that baby had been found by the hero's mother and she brings her to the couple and asks them to raise it since she cannot bear giving away such a gift from God to an orphanage or something.
