True story. About 1989-91 I chanced upon on of these VW vans with the upper windows in a auto parts recycling yard on N. Mission Rd. near Los Angeles General Hospital. When I asked about it they claimed it was an abandoned vehicle towed in off the freeway years prior. Sometime later I met a fellow at a weekend swap meet wearing a t-shirt with a photo of one of these types on it. I gave him the information. The next week or so I went by that auto parts yard. I didn't see it. I was sure he had saved it. BUT THEN upon my asking - the Hispanic guy pointed out it was on the back of a flatbed truck along with some other vehicles. It was missing it's wheels, the roof a little flattened and had another car stacked on top of it. That load he said was going to the metal recycling crusher! These guys had it in their yard for years and did not know it was a scarce model. That VW collector had not come in to save it quick enough - if he ever came looking for it at all. TRAGIC! As I understand it these models were made to take people from the airport to the hotels. The small upper windows so they could look up at the tall buildings to be impressed. I'm glad this beautiful restored example will always be appreciated no matter who owns it now and in the future :
