    You were spot on about behaviors, additute and temperment. They get jealous and bite you when someone gets too close to you. I lost the top part of door frame. Wisdom had a vocabulary of about 30 words. They hold a gurge and don't want to be left behind. I enjoyed my Senegal.

    The pied and lutino variety of Senegal Parrots are nowhere nearly as attractive as the natural form. No wonder they can’t compete with the natural colour form. By the way, I love the grey heads. The contrast is rather unique and I don’t find them looking evil at all. A very handsome species indeed IMHO.

      Hi! I did not do has much research as I should of back then. I did not have Facebook to join groups etc. I heard good things about them and only a few bad ones that I could handle. I will never get another Senegal because of their nastiness. If I only knew what I know now, I would probably never get one but sometimes the best way to find how they are is by owning them.

    Your description of a sennie's behavior is right to a tee! My bird has picked my wife as his favorite and he just goes for the rest of us with his beak, and he whacks without showing aggression, no warning! Whenever he sees me, he will chase after me 😅 He was a rescued bird and initially wasn't aggressive towards me. However, after he got established in my home, his sentiments seemed to have changed over time.

      There properly a reason why he like that since before he acting nice towards you and now he acting mean and biting you there still hope u can train them to be more social as it is important for them to learn to interact with other humans nicely

    I have 3 Sennies.
    One s a 25 year old female who I bought as a fledging. Generally friendly to all, but particularly adores my son. Intelligent, playful and generally lovely, but can occasionally bite unpredictably if she doesn't get her own way or if another bird annoys her. And it hurts - a lot. But I love her to bits, even if she rules the house with a rod of iron.
    The second is a male aged about 22. I got him as a rescue and it was the second time he'd been rescued. The first time, he had been abused and was scared of people but had made progress under his second owner. It took 10 years of hard work to fully socialise him and he is now friendly, never bites and will accept and enjoy a head scratch.
    The third is of unknown gender and is aged about 10, having been rescued by me 5 years ago. His previous owners had fed him(her) well, but never let him out of his cage or handled him. From day one with me, he was incredibly tame and could be handled with complete trust. He now spends as much time with me as I can spare and is simply the most adorable, tame bird I've ever seen. He never bites and actually enjoys being handled.
    All Sennies are wonderful if properly socialised and trained.

    I have a 27 year old female senegal I named Dia. I worked in an exotic bird aviary years ago and she was pulled as an egg from the nesting box and hatched in an incubator. I took her home at 1 week of age and hand fed her. She was raised with my 3 year old and 9 month old children. She prefers me, but tolerates my son pretty well. She was fine with my daughter until she had a friend over and they started poking at Dia through the cage bars. Dia has never liked my daughter since, and to this day when my daughter visits, Dia has a hissy fit until she leaves. I also have found that she loves eating cooked egg whites and roasted chicken chunks two or three times per week. I think the protein helps because Dia has never had any health issues. She is a quiet bird and mimics my laughter, phone and microwave more than talking. Loves head rubs!

    We had an African Senegal named Murphy. He was a great bird. Then we moved. He was in his cage but had unscrewed the nut and escaped when I opened the door at our new home, out he went. Murphy never came home. That was in San Diego so at least the environment was good. I wonder what people do when they hear Murphy today singing the Star Wars theme music in the trees.

    My aunt had one: it was noisy, extremely picky (as to both food and people) and extremely messy. It would scream angrily if you turned the TV on in that room, because it liked it quiet. It would either ignore or hiss at anybody other than my aunt. None of us kids liked it much. Very pretty, though... in an angry bald-eagle kind of way.

    I have a Senegal. Her name is Baby. She’s about 25(ish) and she’s the sweetest thing. I agree with you...no dust, she’s a pretty clean bird. She does do the high pitch scream when she sees me in the kitchen. Apparently she’s upset I’m not paying attention to her? LOL She says a few things (she just mumbled hello as I was typing this). If she sees me eating something that intrigues her, she comes to the front of her cage and says “what’s what”. Cracks me up. Her favorite thing to do is make kissy noises, though. And, as you said, she doesn’t seem to like other birds. I was paying attention to my cockatiel the other night and she flew down and headed straight for Tiki. I had to pick her up so fast lol.

    Hi! I love Senegal parrots but I’m so afraid to get one like your Electra. I have 3 kids and I’m afraid that the Senegal hurts my children. So, I’m trying to find some more adequate bird to my family. I thought in Kingsley? Does he loud? Does he made a lot of noise? Does he talk? He accept more than one person? He is so gorgeous!!

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kingsley is the best bird that I have ever owned. Much better then a Senegal. Senegals have such large beaks compared to a king parrot.
      Kingsley likes everyone and hardly makes any noise and is not a screamer so far.
      Not sure if all king parrots are like Kingsley but he is such a sweet bird.

    Nice video.I never knew all those things about Senagals .Knowing all this I do not think a Senagals would be for me.I had one a long time ago for only a short time and had to give him up .He really didn’t care for me too much but he fell in love with my neighbor and so I gave him to my neighbor and he was very happy there for over 35 yrs.I would say that if I were ever to get another bird in here I would have to ask you about any other species because I really trust everything you say especially being a bird person like yourself .I have a little question not on your topic .I get little nosebleeds ( minor) my dr has told me to go out and buy a humidifier.I worry about mold even cleaning it..I only get this stuff on the winter, Iam soo afraid to get a humidifier because of mold. They sell some that are mold inhibitors.Donna , do you think these humidifiers are safe around birds and if not can you recommend one.I truly value everything you say.Thank you for sharing

    I have had three Senegals . 2 very aggressive birds and one real sweetie pie . The gentle one was female so I don't know if that's what made the difference. My aggressive birds would attack visitors and one nasty attack burst my eyelid and left me with a black eye.

    Thank you for all this information. I didn't know about Chlamydia psittaci that can be passed to humans. I have some questions:
    1-do you recommend senegals for apartment?are they loud?
    2-Should we have a pair or a single one ?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I personally don't think that Senegals are loud compared to other birds. They do have a shrill like call but it's not the loud to me. Not sure if it can travel through walls. My Sennie isn't that loud. If you keep your sennie busy with plenty of chew toys and interaction that the noise will be minimal.
      Senegals are known for killing or harming their mates so it's best to get an already bonded pair if you can. If you get a second one later on after the first one they may not like each other.
      I personally say get one but only if you have a lot of time to spend with the bird. Another bird in a separate cage is a good idea so they can talk bird to each other. Let them out together if they get along. Just be careful with other birds as Sennies can be nasty to other birds.
      Hope this helps, glad you enjoyed the video

    I had a cockatiel until two weeks ago. He seemed excessively tired so I took him to a major vet emergency room. They said it was due to molting. He had no fever and appeared well. No change in appetite. No poo changes. The vet sent us home. He ended up dead an hour after I woke him up.
