I don’t know any other channel putting out detailed tree ID like this, really appreciate it. And I’ve saw lines of holes drilled into hickory’s a time or two here in central KY, I believe either mockernut or pignut, but I’ve seen it

I appreciate the compliment Bobby. My early videos on this channel were much shorter but I soon realized there was an interest in more extensive presentations. I plan to replace some of the earlier tree studies with more extensive ones in the future.
I too saw drill holes almost girdling bitternut and pignut hickory trees in Ohio. I am not sure if this is from the sapsucker or some kind of insect?

Thanks for watching and I hope the hikes I recorded bring back memories. Lake of Isles Boy Scout camp is almost unrecognizable now that it is a golf course. If it is any consolation the recently developed trail network around Lambert Mountain in this video is extensive and even more rugged and scenic than Lake of Isles.

A.k.a. lin, linden, lime, american linden, bast wood , and lastly basswood...
The fragrance was so sweet; it inspired Franz Schubert to write a lieder ( song) about it... great show, I watched to the end. I believe yellow bellies tap hard and soft maples here in S. Indiana. I learn something everyday. Thanks!

Thank you for watching...I have noticed horizontal rows of holes on maples and other trees since recording this video but the rows do help me pick out Basswood while hiking. Many uses for these trees including excellent carving wood and fibrous bark for making rope. I did not try to smell the Basswood flowers in this video due to all the bees but may try next year. Good Luck

All the Ash are gone here in CT. Looks like all the Beech are on their way out as well.
The forest floor looks to be really coming alive with trees lying.

Thank you for watching! It is no fun watching the Beech Leaf disease turn what was once deep shady woods to bright and sunny due to lack of healthy foliage. Hemlocks also cast less shade than before due to the wooly adelgid. Black Birch, Tulip Tree and Red Maple are filling some of the void for now.

Thanks for watching...only one species of Tilia in the eastern states but many more in Asia and Europe!

Thanks for watching! I have noticed rows of holes on hickories and maples since recording this video last year. They really like the planted saucer magnolia in our yard. Best wishes

how old are the basswood trees when they first start to get flowers ?

Thanks for watching! My observations have shown flowers form on larger Basswood trees which are often out of view when growing in a woodland setting. I have never seen flowers on stump sprouts of larger trees. The best place to see Basswood flowers is to find trees which have branches drooping toward a natural opening such as the river in this video or a forest edge or roadside. The yellow green bracts make the flowers easy to spot from a distance. I recall spotting hundreds of trees in flower this summer while driving in the Mid Hudson valley of New York! The US Forest Service reports Basswood trees can start to flower at 15 years of age but often take longer (up to 100 years). Best wishes
