Rebinding DUNE - Part 2 - Rescuing A Vintage Book: Custom Endpapers, Backing & Covers

- Hello everyone!
My gamble on buying an old copy of Dune paid off, though not without some serious effort to make it so. In this video I’ll finish off the sewn text block with some custom marbled endpapers and woven endbands before strengthening the spine and attaching some covers. Sounds easy, right? Well, compared with repairing every page, I would agree with you! But it’ll still take a lot of careful work, so come along and join me on the journey!
If you missed part one, watch it here: • Rebinding DUNE - Part ...
Or if you'd rather skip to part 3: • Rebinding DUNE - Part ...
Or jump right to the big Finale: • Rebinding DUNE - FINAL...
Cheers,
Dennis

Who need Netflix when you have this 📚
You said it
Because 30 minutes is going to replace endless hours of stuff on Netflix? Also, you can't go between both?
@@gregpenismith1248 I don’t have hours to spend watching Netflix and I find this much more entertaining
Who needs Netflix period. Total junk
@@thefryinallofuscool story. Pretty sure several million people would disagree with you.
Edit: Dude, you have no room to talk. You play Star Citizen and believe in fairy tales like the bible.
One hundred years from now and more, long after we're all gone, this book will likely still be in someone's library, bringing great joy. Looking forward to your next installment in its making.
Or along the way someone will throw it in the trash because "books are for nerds lol"
@@RJiiFin
Well, R. Jii Fin... *Does those books' 📖📘 are still for some nerds* 🤓 out there, and *that someone's will callously throwing it right into the trashcan 🗑 because of THAT reason* by then?
this book is an investment piece. It'll be setting in a collectors library hundreds of years from now, slowly inflating in value.
@@shafismaili1347unless the society soon to come don't go burning books. Some major religions hate books that don't suit their needs
Just keep it out of the US.
We are all dying for part 3 brother
I just came back 3 weeks after watching this video because I wanted to post this!!
I've been checking every week since part 2, love these comments haha
Should be this week. Hang in there.
@@FourKeysBookArts very excited, thanks for the reply my friend!
This is like watching good, old fashioned television where you’re really, really excited for the next episode - and you have to _wait_ for it to be broadcast. As the episode was about to end, my mind went ‘Noooo, but I want to watch more!’ You have such a comforting, pleasant voice and the pacing of your videos is just top notch. Thank you!
I completely agree!
I shouted at the TV 😂 can't wait for the next one.
He pulled a Villeneuve on us. Turning what we thought was one sitting into three glorious installments.
The beauty of marbling is that not only can it be used to print unique and gorgeous paper designs, it can also be used to print fabrics in particular silk to create lovely textiles, and can even be used, with variations in the depth of the size bath, to paint 3D items too
Absolutely! I haven’t done much textile marbling, though I have experimented with ceramics and leather. It’s a really versatile medium.
Video! video! About cutting book
This is looking like another heirloom -- the whole thing is gorgeous, but those endpapers are perfection for this particular book.
Inspired me??? Heck my own cast iron book press arrived today!!!! Denise i have watched a few other binders out there but YOU sir, instruct thoroughly, and cut NO corners. I had no idea that you created your own end papers as well. So lovely. Lemme buy you a cup of joe.
Thank you so much, I truly appreciate it! Welcome to the craft!
Okay, that marbling? With the leather? Gorgeous. Just GORGEOUS! And it so fits the theme. This book is going to be absolutely marvelous and I am consumed by envy. In the best way possible.
Beautiful work! The marbled end papers could not be better chosen!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is the Dune Part 2 I’ve been waiting for
I wish I could see it in person! It looks so gorgeous, Dennis. Thank you for sharing your artistry and craftsmanship with us.
My pleasure!
I’ve never been so engaged by someone’s raw talent, passion and mastery of their Art. Thanks so much for this series!
Omg it’s here 😍😍🤩
I’ve been checking your page almost everyday for this video
Hope you enjoyed it!
Glad I'm not the only one that has been checking for part 2!
I’m not exactly sure how the TH-cam algorithm sent me to this series, but boy am I glad it did. I have no interest in becoming a book binder, but watching an artist work and understanding how things are put together is something I consider infinitely valuable. Thanks for sharing your skill and passion.
One Denis creates a film of Dune, the other Denis binds a book of Dune. That's awesome, I've never seen this process before, it's fascinating. Thank you!
Your end papers are simply gorgeous. The entire process is fascinating, but as a paper marbleizer myself, I’m particularly impressed by the end papers.
You are a magnicifent artist! This will be a beautiful book!
World Class. Who knew a bookbinder could become a Superstar? I am rivited. Perfect editing that captures a perfect work of art.
My favourite book, ever. It feels like an old friend.
My mother loved to read and encouraged me to read as well as sharing her books with me. I first read it in late elementary school, she and I would have long conversations about it, she would explain the parts I didn't understand...which made it all the more fascinating...so many layers.
Miss you, Mum.
The marbling design could not have been more perfect!
That sand dune paper marbling is crazy!
Great narration, engaging content, and wonderful filming.
A masterful video!
Wow, thank you!
That marbled paper is gorgeous! This book is going to be beautiful!
I love watching people who love what they do 🫶
Also, if you put some 3M hooks on your steel ruler, you’ll find it easier and firmer to hold… and keep your fingers safely out of the way… I do it on my quilting rulers!
Dry-fitting the cover boards reminds me of mortise and tendon joinery! 😉👍🏻 Brilliant! SO MUCH to learn here. Very complex process and lengthy process. You could fill an entire book just on how to MAKE or restore a book! But the video is much better. Seeing it actually done in real time is AMAZING?
This Dune: Part Two is just as good as the Hollywood one
Also, your machines are beautifully cared for. Watching you is like everything I love: beautiful music; the feel of the ocean on my skin; hiking thru the Eucalyptus forest & feeling the trees; tasting morning ozone on my lips...You are appreciated.
You simply cannot find this much dedication anywhere in life any more. Fantastic, exquisite work sir!
You have mad skills! This is actually very exciting - I can’t wait for part 3!!!!
Such excellent paper choice
3:32 I like the burnished look personally
Hi Dennis, that's so impressive, and absolutely brilliant!! I watched parts 1 and 2 straight off....and it's now 3am in the UK. Looking forward to part 3! Best regards!!
the gorgeous endpapers remind me of rolling sand dunes i think it matches the aesthetic perfectly
Beautiful! You made me have a whole new level of respect for bookbinders and their craft.
I liked seeing the side by side comparison of the paper after burnishing, It makes the colors stand out.
Who knew i needed this in my life at 10:48pm at night
Your work is immaculate! But I must say that, when you were talking about the marbled paper I smiled a little extra. Beautiful work 🥰
Very excited to see the next steps. The medieval book series was super, the D&D makeover was awe-inspiring, and this one is shaping up to surpass them both! Be careful about constantly raising the bar, Dennis 😆
Nice - Your craft is amazing, I hope you decide to teach it to someone - Cannot wait for Part 3 - A fan....😎
I have been waiting for this one! This will be a good saturday watch ❤
PS: It was a good watch! I love the absolute attention to detail, be it in the work or the creation of the video and commentary.
I absolutely love your channel. The skill and patience you have just blows my mind. you sir are very talented.
A most esteemed patient. Just wonderful.
This is a completely different way of binding i havent seen yet. Plus, the quality of the videos are perfect for learning this process!
Stunning and immaculate per usual! BTW: just noticed you were using a Blackwing pencil. You are truly a man of impeccable taste and a man after my own heart if I’m honest. haha
This is so unbelievabley cool. Master Craftsman at work.
Looking great. And the video itself is beautifully produced. The novel itself certainly deserves such treatment. 👍😁
That marbled paper is stunning
I discovered this channel with the medieval book binding and it made me want to start learning the art. Thanks to your book binding basics, I made my first leaflet a few weeks ago and I loved every step! Now, following the making of this book inspires me once more. Thank you so much for sharing such beautiful creation and inspiring us all!
Dennis, once again just fabulous work, very good choice for the endpapers, can't wait to see the finished book!
This is just sublime.
I just finished the third book, and I get why it's such a revered series that so many things get ideas from.
Loving this project
The difference in texture, colour and sheen after burnishing is wild.
I havent had the privilage of reading Dune. I used to watch the original film a lot as a kid. Seeing you bind this beautiful book makes me want to pick up a copy! Thank you for sharing your amazing process :)
Man, these sort of videos make me realize how much I take books for granted.
this cover is very complex compared to the others you've shown previously! i like it :D thx for sharing
I know complaining about a three-week gap in uploads is incredibly whiny but gosh darn it I am so excited for the next part I’m dying. I hope your next upload is planned soon!!!
Howdy, after Part 1 Rebinding I now want to see Dune part one again ... Wonderful video - clear and concise instructions - love it. Thank you. I agree these end papers are perfect.
Amazing job! Your patterned paper are truly tasteful paintings. Congratulations!
Cheers
I love getting this inside look at an ancient craft, which remains true to form and unchanging after centuries of practice!
TH-cam algorithms have truly blessed me this week! I started out watching a single video of a carpenters unique furniture designs, which led me into a rabbit hole of many other disparate artisan professions recommended in my feed.
Anyone else hear the signatures sighing in relief as this book gets new life?
I bloody cheer every time the little tappy hammer comes out for the spine 🎉 I love it. One of my fave parts of the process 🥰
Awesome work, can't wait for part 3
Dennis, thank you for your care and time in producing this video, painstakingly documenting your process. I appreciate having a resource like yours in which I can be instructed when I take up my own bookbinding hobby.
My pleasure!
I’m checking for part 3 daily😢
Paper marbling is one of the neatest parts of a book binding. They look like prints yet completely hand-made .Really nice job. Thanks for taking us along 👍.
Amazing work.the only feature i wish it had at this stage is a ribbon or two. Ribbons are a positive addition to any book, being a builtin bookmark.
Just spent right over an hour watching this and the prior video and it flew by leaving me wanting more! Thankfully this is two weeks old so it shouldn't be very long till the next, I rang that bell to make sure I don't miss it 📚🫶
Another amazing video! Tank you for the upload :-D
Can't wait for P3.
You have to watch this whole video purely out of respect for this guys dedication to perfection.
I'm so happy I found this channel. I may never do a single one of these things but my mind is brown every time. It's also relaxing to watch!
Master Craftsmanship. Mesmerizing.
Man, you nailed it with those end papers! They’re perfection! ❤🎉❤🎉
Pure art. Thank you.
Captivating craftsmanship
Let’s goooooo! I can never wait for the next part 😂
I have been waiting for this moment
I cannot overstate how much I enjoy getting to watch you work. Your passion and artistry are phenomenal, your vids beautifully shot, and with the voiceover explaining the process, just *chef's kiss* The leather joint against that marbled endpapers is going to look SO good!
This is crazy. What a craftsman, what artistry. Glad the algo guided me to your channel.
I had just finished watching part 1 and I was bummed when I saw I had to wait for part 2. Luckily, I had subscribed + clicked on the bell lol, I never do that. Amazing work man, can't believe how much I'm enjoying your channel!
I am anxiously waiting for Part 3. Checking daily!!
Another amazing video! Can't wait for part 3!
Love these videos, so soothing and interesting!
The marbled paper is so perfect for this! looks SO good!
i am genuinely vibrating in anticipation for part three
Truly masterful!
Commenting for the algorithm, more people need to see this.
That was one of the most mesmerizing things I've watched in a long time. Love the attention to detail. Great work. Thanks for sharing. Need more craftsman like this!
Excellent work! 👏 So great to see the process on a brilliant book.
Such a wonderful project. Can't wait to see the result
ah well that did not disappoint! some brilliant little tips & tricks I've learned there. its looking great. Look forward to the next installment.
Fascinating and beautiful. Thank you for sharing the process :)
Ahh this was so, so wonderful to watch after a very difficult week. The book is looking fabulous - and now I'm impatient for Part Three after that sly little tease about something different!
I love your detail-oriented work, your skill and dedication to the craft! And your editing style and calm narration as well.
I was so excited when part 2 appeared! I have been looking forward to seeing it so much! I'm also glad there will be more to come!
As always, amazing work, amazing filming/editing/voice over, and amazing workshop room (I'm not jealous at all). Thank you for taking the time to share your art with us 🤗
I would KILL for those endpapers 😭😭
I've been WAITING for the second part, im so in love with it, great and relaxing video! First part daydreammed me into another realm of my grandpas library, so im very thankful for this!♡✨
Even on camera the burnishing really brings out the colour on your paper! Incredible piece of craftsmanship thank you for sharing your work!
❤❤❤I love this channel. Beautiful work.
I just love how you use the mathematical books as your dirty rags :D
