I never knew how much I needed a nerrisa and mumei collab until now. I usually dont watch vods but I couldnt stop listening to this.
I'm watching the vod while playing no man's sky and I'm enjoying it so much. I didn't knew I needed it too, I love just talking collabs. And theirs was sooooo good.
Zatsu collab worked out better than expected, bouncing between comfy and suffering emotional damage by proxy but still remained interesting and fun. Thanks for the stream, really.
Never really was part of the emo subculture(s) myself - rather falling into something a little more rebellious, slightly different direction - but always sort of mingled with them. The other mostly black dressed kids that kind of were alike but different.

Thank you for the emo hours collab Nerissa and Moom! It was really nice, especially the shift from emo to just general 2000s nostalgia. One of my favorite things about Council and Nerissa is that like you guys said, I think a lot of us were nerds and outcasts who were into these things as kids but didn’t have a ton of people to talk to about them, so it’s really cool to have a space to kind of get to talk about those things now here with you guys. As someone outside of the emo scene in middle school this was very eye-opening. Thank you Nerissa for bonding with Mumei
So, I'm 42, which means I am from the before time, in the long long ago, where there was no series of tubes connecting the world together. Emo was not even a thing that existed back then... I mean "batcavers" which was sorta a goth club where people listened to Morrissey was a thing, we had punk, still piggybacking on Black Flag, Ramones so on and so forth. Then we had good old fashion metal such as Metallica, Megadeath, Slayer and other flavors of semi articulate rage.
Then come the late 80s or early 90s we had grunge, which sorta mixed a lot of the metal/rock/punk stuff in to this nice mass of malaise and angst, which was a nice mix of all the mainstream culture rejection. Because if you were part of a subculture that was unpopular you sure as hell needed some sort of thing to go to. No chatrooms, no forums, nothing at all, I was lucky and found some good people at a gaming store, lot of other people didn't find anyone, thus genx having the unaliving rate that caused people to take notice of it.... I mean, people don't actually care to this day, but yeah, genx represent.
I'm 41 and I can confirm that there were some REALLY freaky AOL chatrooms back in the day. But you had to know where to find 'em. 4chan had nothing on some of them, lol.
There is nothing new under the sun. Everything that people think is new is actually just so old that people forgot about it.
EDIT: Usenet groups in 1980. They were rocking in the free world before we were even born.

Even without having an emo phase or listening to music you did (just a theatre/nerd), I think everyone can relate to feeling like an outcast or not finding anyone who shares your interests at some point, so hearing you two get to chat and bond over those experiences is a wonderful bit of catharsis. Went in expecting them to mostly discuss music...and we got some of that but mostly two dorky birds bonding about their awkward childhood; which is arguably even better So many relatable moments; and some that were kinda out there
Hope to see more of those two ladies together someday; be it in an upcoming "WolfQuest"-colab where they outlive their pack fantasies, or the inevitable founding of the Holo rock band

Mooom~We may have started with the also-relatable-to-me emo hours, but this really became a "nerds/socially struggling/generally outcast as kids" relatability and nostalgia zatsuThat part where you spoke about going around collecting and looking at rocks at recess blasted me right back to my time at school doing _exactly the same thing_ As far as playing pretend as a kid - yeah, chat is being weird. I was relatively rarely an animal when playing pretend as a young kid, but (as a fantasy-novel/game nerd from a very young age) I was often one of any number of fantasy creatures or characters. It's just the imagination of a young child, I don't know why chat are so dedicated to denying itThe hoodies, the black t-shirts, the existing on the fringe as a nerd with nerdy interests - it's just all so relatableIt was so sweet, too, to hear the story of your email to Webkinz Mumei - it is just such a pure, idealistic child's action, and it's so cute how you responded and how happy lil Moom was
It's really nice for you girls in HoloEN to have this place and these lovely people to talk to about relatable experiences you have had and still have, and (I've said this before about hanging out with you Moom) it's really nice for me and I'm sure many Hoomans to feel like we have found a group of people and an Oshi where we can all be just a bit weird together and not have to hide whatever weird side of ourselves we generally do. Lots of topics I can relate to (although it got a bit unhinged towards the end)
MAN this is good stuff. I grew up in the midwest and was a teenager in the late 00's so I feel kind of vindicated for my apparently weird taste in music at the time. Being into that weird stuff got me a lot of super cool friends after high school as I was a vocalist in a deathcore band.

You don't know how violently my whole body reacted when I heard Mumei say "Midwest Emo," as a music nerd who's been deeply invested in Merchant Ships and the like since High School. Like, sure, it was more a conversation about aesthetics, but still. I feel so seen. I personally was a "Real Screamo" kid in those days, so I was very uncool and listened to Orchid and Saetia a lot. That was my Emo phase, at a point when Emo was really not a thing in the zeitgeist anymore (late 2010's - Midwest Revival in its dying days, Emo Pop and Nu Metal hadn't been critically reevaluated yet).
This stream was a riot. Rissa really came and said let me show you some real psychopathy.
She's got a few screws loose but that's part of the charm.
This was a very fun chatting stream!! I enjoyed listening to you two talk about your emo pasts and other stuff.
Hearing the disappointment in Nerissa's voice with confessions of Mumei's answer on seeing naruto made these emo moments too real. But it's fine, you two were able to connect on horse-girl activities and other childhood activities Thanks for the stream!

Man, this video was a mood. First the opening was all happy and bubbly and then BAM we got rain, a dark area, Mumei with her cute cape but looking sad and Nerissa also looking sad. This was definitely a emo stream although again Nerissa's top tier cursing definitely screamed emo girl lol. But Mumei randomly screaming and crying about something from the past made me want to hug her and the conversations about all things Emo was great. Same with the Raven sound likes, which was VERY amazing and the two birbs communicating with opera sounds lol. In spite of the gloomy air, this was still a very fun stream with you two great birds. Amazing job on the stream Mumei and Nerissa!
My emo phase lasted all the way until around 10th grade.
I never spoke much, but certain childhood trauma sucked out any color or expression that barely existed in the first place. I became a mute drawing stick figure versions of anime fanfiction or writing original stories in my Composition notebooks while listening to stuff like Animal by Three Days Grace in the back of class,invisible and completely ignored.
where Mumei liked messing with rocks, I liked setting fire to things, doing stuff like bringing a lighter or matches to school and hanging out on the roof during recess or somewhere else secluded, setting fire to small objects, leaves or little pieces of paper. Nobody really interacted with me, so those little fires gave me peace. I eventually found this girl like me in middle school and we just silently sat around each other, she'd watch me draw or bring me little things to set on fire. but it didn't last, I was forced to move away for reasons, and the loss of my first and only friend at the time threw me deeper into my emo phase.

Thanks for the wonderful collab zatsu to listen to at work. I only ever had a brief tryst with Emo listening to MCR, Greenday, Fallout Boy, Saosin, and Alesana before falling deeper into heavier and edgier music. I became a metalhead too fast to have properly enjoyed being emo cuz I was exposed to the metal songs that cursed the world instead of just hating on a person and oh yeah the brothers of metal thing was so god damned cool to me and my chuuni mind lmao

Zatsu collabs are a very specific beast - maybe we'll see more similar ones in the future. Just listening to the two of them was quite interesting and entertaining.
My emo origin story:
When March 2020 came around it was when I first played Nier Automata. After playing it I quickly picked up the themes of existential nihilism in the game. I’m born from a very Catholic family that goes to church every week. The only time I’ve watched a church mass in 2020 was when I was forced to watch a Christmas Eve mass and I hated every second of it. I was filled with blind rage that if a God or some other divine entity truly exists humanity goes out of their way to put blind faith in these entities and what do we get in exchange? Disaster, war, famine, greed, mass genocide, discrimination, and death.
I was furious when I realized these entities only wish for one thing: our damnation.
No matter who you are, rich or poor, emo or not emo, life leads to the same thing: death. No matter what happens, death is the only thing that awaits us in the end. If these so called entities don’t give a damn about us, what’s the point?

I never really understood the word "unhinged", but if this zatsu qualifies then I don't want to be hinged This was a lovely social outcast bonding session! The part about sizing up every stranger you pass on the street hit too close to home, it's like a slow-motion trainwreck in my mind every time I have to do it. Lots of fun stories too, it was great to get to know Nerissa better and see you two connect with so many childhood experiences!
I never had an emo phase specifically but I do relate to becoming the quiet kid in the class once puberty hit, and suddenly you're not allowed to talk about your hobbies anymore because it isn't "cool" enough or you don't like it in the "right" way. In short, elitists are just silly and everyone should be a wolf girl because there's a 50% chance you'll go on to be super popular!

38:10: Life in the Midwest is sad, but for the normal reasons. And it's not cold _all_ of the time-around here, summers routinely got over 100 degrees even before every summer started breaking heat records. And there are cornfields across the whole Midwest, not just Ohio. Ohio's not special.

jokes aside, midwest emo is the genre that ran in, trespassed, and locked itself in my music taste (yes I also dress like that lol). I was Merchant Ships/Midwest Pen Pals, The Hotelier, and even the classic American Football are the bands that will forever be engraved in my mind, you can't even imagine how stoked I was when I heard those two little words in this stream.

Thanks for the stream! My "emo" experience is kind of sad... it is more on the music side of emo "style". Where i live, on the southern hemisphere, there is a very popular genre of music which could be said to be similar to rap but in spanish, so liking other music genres made you automatically an outcast.... It was also very common to see people making fun of the "popular" emo haircut and a bunch of different stereotypes...
My answer to what music i liked was always "i dont have any"...
It was nice to see some similarities with the northen hemisphere though. Many highschool memories crossed my mind throughtout the stream.
Zatsu collabs need to happen more often though! We discover some new sides or feel more related to the streamers with their past experiences and such.

I was a rapter... specifically like the ones in Jurassic park that chased the kids into the kitchen. When I first saw toys with dinosaurs equipped with robot weapons and limbs, I became that too.

Looking back, I think I did technically have a mild, benign emo phase. I never identified as emo, but I listened to a LOT of Fall Out Boy, Paramore ("Ignorance" Paramore, not "Into you" Paramore), and Three Days Grace. A7X was a big part of highschool for me too, but that was mostly due to me being a drummer. I always saw the emo music I listened to as Alt rock or punk rock
I'm more on the skater side than emo, but had a handful of emo/scene friends. Flannel/Hoodie, studded belt and skinnies was my go to, still is except for the studded belt(although I do still have one somewhere). Maiden, AC/DC, Metallica, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Rise Against, Green Day, Papa Roach, My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Bullet for my Valentine, Bring me the Horizon, Enter Shikari, RATM, Gorillaz, RHCP, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, HIM etc It was the music that drew me to the style/culture and the amazing people that I got to meet that kept me. Thanks for the nostalgia trip gals, rep it, wear it proudly. Although, some of these stories are incredibly cringe and it's fucking adorable.
My recommendations for heavy emoy music atm are Spiritbox, Polaris(The album "The Death of Me" is peak heavy emo music, you literally can't get better), ERRA, Northlane, Alpha Wolf, Crystal Lake. BMTH are just the goats of emo (You can disagree but I honestly don't care cause you'd be wrong).
I am glad I am not the only one who thinks I have a wolf inside of me and fights other kids with my imaginary claws in my emo phase.....
