I wanted to tell you that I took you up on the offer of emmy80 on the hellofresh. Fix the first meal today. Thank you! As far as butter making goes, my grandma on the farm needs to give me cream and put it in a mason jar so I could walk around and shake it to death. It kept me out of her hair and made butter at the same time. Thank you for the flashback.

In kindergarten, my teacher put the ingredients of butter in a mason jar, we sat in a circle and shook shook shook and passed it in the circle to churn it. She then spread the butter on saltines which was yummy. Amazing teacher tbh.
Edit: I am so glad we were all able to bond over our experiences, I wasn't expecting my comment to blow up the way it did, but Emmy truly has the sweetest fan-base on the internet.

In “Little House in the Big Woods”, Laura’s mom makes butter and uses a butter press that embosses a pattern of leaves and strawberries onto the finished sticks of butter. Up until a few years ago, my grandmother used to hand milk her cow twice a day everyday. Then every Thursday she would use some of the milk to make her own butter using this ancient wooden churn she had in her little workshop. I never not remember it being there.
We of course used the rest of the milk as it was and I remember my grandmother chasing me around the house after catching me sticking my finger in the cream that had gathered at the top of the milk. Great memories! Her arthritis makes it difficult to do these things now but she still bakes tarts, cakes, biscuits and jam like there's no tomorrow!

Thank you for this video that brought back so many happy memories from my past, Emmy!
I'm 69 and as a young girl, I loved to visit my aunt and uncle's farm, deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas. One of my favorite memories was when aunt, CoCo, would let me help her churn butter. She had a large crockery churn which turned out several pounds of butter at a time. It sat on the floor, in front of the kitchen rocker and was operated by plunging a wooden device up and down through the cream, which was quite a work out! I remember sitting in that chair and churning until my arm wore out, then CoCo would come along and churn for a while, then sometimes my uncle would come in from chores and take a seat in that old rocker and churn away as he listened to two baseball games at the same time on the radio & TV. Anyhow, when the churning was complete, she would collect all the butter and press it out in a white enamel wash-pan of cool water, working the butter with a flat wooden paddle until all the milk was rinsed and extracted from the butter, then after salting it, she pressed it into a cute little wooden mold which had a device inside that would push out a perfect 1 pound loaf of freshly churned butter! Then my very favorite chore was to carefully wrap each pound in waxed paper much like a little gift. The next day we would gather up that fresh butter and hen eggs, along with her bundles of Green Stamp books to take to the Redemption Center after we delivered the butter and eggs to her delightful customers. Oh, if I could just go back to visit that world which was so much kinder and more loving than this old world has become ... Anyhow, enough of my ramblings! Thank you for the memories, Emmy! I only wish we had a world full of sweet Emmys ... it would be a wonderful world! God bless you, Dear ♥

IcyMare it started with fresh milk. When you milk cows you get extremely high fat milk the fat collects at the top. My best friends owned a cow farm and their milk was delicious but you always had to scrape the top before drinking it. So really it’s just part of putting their milk in the fridge like you would with your store bought milk. You don’t have it in the counter just a day in the fridge will do it.
Their milk and coffee cream was amazing too. Their mom didn’t like making homemade cheese because they would have had to get rennet from the calves. So that was always store bought. On another note their steak was phenomenal

I'm 62. As a kid on the farm it was my job to run the Dazey when mom made butter. We had a guernsey cow that had rich milk. I still have that churn and one from my late MIL. Also did the shake the jar thing earlier. The Dazey was a great step up. I'd put mine to use if I could find a good source for raw milk to get the cream from. Just too expensive using store bought, heavy whipping cream. Before we got the cow mom would skim cream from the milk bottles that got delivered until she had enough for churning. That was when we used just the jar shake method. I could never learn to like buttermilk (the leftover liquid), but it is great for baking. My mother and grandparents loved to drink it though.
Enjoy a lot of your videos. Also that you try out and embrace a wide variety of foods and enjoy their histories. Also enjoy the apocalypse meal videos. Keep up the great work.

I sure miss it, there's nothing like homemade butter. We'd let the cream age for a few days before making the butter, and my mom just made it in the blender. Be a butter maker myself, you did a great job. Most people missed one thing you stated very briefly. Butter for the most part does not spoil, it is the milk left in the butter that spoils, spoiling the butter. Making your own butter is a little cheaper, by the time you use the left over milk. This butter milk is so much better than the fake butter milk from the store, not just a little better, but 100x better. If you use the jar shake method, while the heavy cream is on the counter warming to room temperature, put the jar in the fridge to chill it, this will also speed up the process by a minute or two. Great job Emmy.

It doesn't really take long. I make it all the time. I'm not sure what the marble was for but you don't need it. And the jar was to to small. Get Mason jars. Pint ones for the kids and quart ones for the adults. It works so much better and only takes about 8 minutes or so. Depends on how hard you are shaking . Also do not fill the jar more than half way or it will take forever and it make not even turn to butter. Hope this helps and maybe you can try it again sometimes. My kids my ex a few of my friends and my neighbors love it. I make it about once a week. The butter doesn't last long about a week or so. So maybe keep that in mind.

At my elementary school (I live in Oregon), we had a few days dedicated to the Oregon Trail, and during our re-enactments we made covered wagons and we all got to make butter in baby food jars at the park. It was pretty neat.

As someone who makes her own butter a lot, my only recommendation is to put the butter in a glass bowl and cover with water. You smoosh it around in the cold water and wash it that way. Change the water until it comes out clear, then pat it (I also do this in a bowl to drain the water out that accumulates) works like a charm.

I have my grandmother's Davey Churn with the original, wood paddles. She was born in 1895 (I am in my late 50s--the youngest of six children), and I was always fascinated by the "olden days." I am so grateful for this treasure. It still turns beautifully--I believe in thanks to my father (a 1920s baby) who, like me, thought maintaining family history and the associated artifacts was important. Loved this video.

I’m 58 and I remember my grandma and I making butter in the same churn, I still have it. We bought milk from a local farm just 1/2 mile away, she would come home with gallon jars full or warm milk, it was so good when it was still warm. We made butter from that.

Thank you for demonstrating the Dazey Churn. In the mid-1950s my mom and I visited a neighbor on a warm summer afternoon. The neighbor had prepared to churn butter using a Dazey Churn and asked if I'd like to try it. I did and was surprised with how quickly it worked, much faster than the traditional plunger churn. This brings back a fond memory.

My great grandmother always speaks about how her mother had these molds for her butter that she'd stick them in that imprinted designs on them. I'm not sure what they looked like, but they must have made an impression on my great grandmother who always recalls butter-making when she was little and how her mother did it. It's rather sweet.

My mother used to use one like this (larger) when I was young and we were living on a farm. We had 1 milk cow.
    The churn is over 100years.

in 7th grade i did a presentation about colonial american foods and demonstrated buttermaking with cream and some salt in a mason jar with some clean marbles dropped in. i let everyone who came to my table shake the jar, then everyone gathered around and ate the butter on some homemade hardtack. awesome day, definitely stole the show. 👍🏼
