False Faith (Archived)

  • By: Alistair Begg || www.truthforlife.org - When professing Christians consistently disregard obedience to God and acts of mercy to their fellow man, their professions of faith are called into question. Genuine faith is evidenced by works spurred on by gratitude. Alistair Begg warns us that the greatest danger in our generation may be the vast number of people who take refuge in a false faith that rejects this truth.

    And a difficult sermon to deliver--Thank God for expository preaching where the pastor follows the verses as they are aligned. No skipping around for convenience. Hey, nobody gets off this rock alive---better we be ready!

    I'm in a church right now where the pastor tells a lot of jokes, I feel at inappropriate times. That turns me off and that's why its refreshing to see a pastor like Allistair Begg. My pastor does the Ask Jesus Into Your Heart slogan, and everyone repeats the prayer after him. I don't go to church for entertainment but for learning and discipleship.

    • @OSleeperTactical
      @OSleeperTactical 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      NZ92673 i can see that being irritating, but examine his doctrine before you leave or anything. A lot of people have taken to the Jesus into your heart phrase but have sound doctrine besides.
      As far as humor goes, I see what you're saying, and tend to agree. But, I have the dual nature of an educator and an (untrained) minister. So the educator part of me says humor helps make learning easier.
      And a final note, the church I go to has a lot of cutting up during the sermons, but the pastor and congregation know when serious is serious and treat the word of God with respect.
      So pay attention to if the jokes are at the expense of the pastor, and of they're to ready the congregation to hear the word, or of its at the expense or in the replacement of the word of God.
      And talk to the pastor about it privately if it's the latter.
      Just my two cents :)

    All I can say is, wow, convicting. I actually did not want to hear this message. I avoided to listen. When I was 10 min into the message I was tempted to turn it off. James is an incredible book of the Bible. However, with that said, the book of James does not give me a feel good reaction. To me reading James is like eating cooked brussel sprouts, spinach, kale, mushrooms all in one pot. Gross, but sooooo good for my body and health. James cuts right to the heart. It has no sugar coating. It does not finesse the truth. Pastor Beggs message has given me a complete different approach at how I view the book of James.
    Thank you Lord. I am blessed to hear this. I am rotten to the core in sin. But I lay it all in front of Christ. May the Holy Spirit dwell in me and change me.

    Don't misunderstand, this is not a works to get saved preaching. He's not saying you must work to get saved what he is saying there are false profession of those who proclaim to have faith but their actions prove there're not saved. It's like the word say ( Luke 6:46) " why do you call me Lord Lord and do not do the things that I say." Read the book of Romans ch 5,6,7 to help with this topic ( the work, the end of sin etc. read Eph 2:10) rather 2:1-10

    We are saved by faith not works lest any man boast.....We are saved by FAITH in Jesus (the cross) as through the death of Christ, sin was overcome.....we are the beneficiaries (salvation). WORKS on the other hand are simply a manifestation of our FAITH. Ergo in this sense WORKS and FAITHS are the same. You can't have FAITH with out the manifestation or by product of it which is WORKS.....

    As much as I appreciate Bro Begg, I don’t think James 2 is talking about an unsaved person who thinks they are a saved person.
    Rather, I believe that James is talking about a person who is living the faith. “The faith” would be living out the doctrine that they received.

    The quote he references is not from Thomas Manton but rather John Newton from one of his sermons entitled "Of a Living and Dead Faith" dealing with James 2:26. Newton compares the power and impact of the Word and Spirit of God on an individual's life with those preachers "acquainted with books" who preach doctrines contrary to the Lord Jesus. The quote Begg gives describes the outcome of such preaching as having no effect.

    James 2 is addressed to saved believers exorting them to put their faith into action here on earth to save the starving and naked people lives etc. Not talking about justification before God at all. If it was it would say show God your faith without works and I will show God my faith by my works but doesn't. It says show me and I will show you etc. So we can see it's man to man so it's about our testimony to others because man can't see our heart he needs to see our actions as proof of faith so when james says you see how we are justified by faith and works we say yes I see we are justified before God by faith and we are justified before man by works. This makes sense when we see Abraham could glory before man but not before God. We also see later james speaking of rewards and rewards are to saved believers.

    Romans 10:9,10 That if thou shall confess with thy mouth the lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart, man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    Who knows your heart? Can a man know his own heart? God most certainly does! So if you believe that you must look for good works in your life as proof that your heart is right, how much and what kind of works must you have to be assured, and at peace that you are truly saved?

    • @ServetusTrumpsCalvin

      +SleeplessinOC
      We can never do enough! That is not the point.
      Jesus commended Mary for having "done what she could" and tells his disciples, "So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'" (Luke 17:10)
      True faith is demonstrated by the Beatitudes: recognizing we are "poor in spirit", coming to a place where we "mourn" over our sins, adopt an attitude of being "meek", "hunger and thirst for righteousness" that is not our own, learning to be "merciful" to people who do not deserve it, doing our best to have a "pure heart", being a "peacemaker" instead of a trouble maker, and the evidence of being mocked or persecuted for being this way. (Matthew 5:3-10)
      Peter says, "For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins." (2 Peter 1:8-9)

    • @oletapayne3233
      @oletapayne3233 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +SleeplessinOC It isn't about doing enough... pray to Christ and ask Him to bring opportunities for you to help others. There's no blessing for anyone who sees a hungry person and says go thy way and be filled, or cold and says go thy way and be warmed. We are to pray for others. It is a sin not to pray. We are living in a ME generation. We are to help those in need. Your mother may be in need of someone to help her clean her kitchen cabinets. It says in the Bible to do all things unto Christ. Hopefully only good things because it would be wrong to do not good things... God knows our hearts. Research your topics: Faith, Obedience, maybe something like "do unto others" (as you would have them do to you). Research is always the best tool. Maybe a neighbor older lady needs help mowing her lawn. If she isn't a Christian and you witness to her, you are planting a seed. There are so many illustrations in the Bible. Remember the greatest of the Commandments is love.

    • @patstokes3615
      @patstokes3615 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SleeplessinOC We do not have to do. If we are committed do Jesus Christ and have faith in him by giving him are lives he will change us to do the work, i.e. you will stop your mouth from saying the wrong things. you will have compasstion for other, You can not have compassion for real unless Jesus and the Holy spirit gives it to you. You will know when YOU ARE DOING IT instead of your heart really feels that way. You can not fool the spirit. You love or you don't. You can act like it and do like it, but it's not the same thing as God putting it for real in your life.

    • @ServetusTrumpsCalvin
      @ServetusTrumpsCalvin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree, to some extent, with what Pat defines as proof of conversion. You WILL have a change of heart if you truly repented and truly believe . I believe the Beatitudes are Jesus' way of giving us that kind of proof. If you sought reconciliation with God because you came to the realization you were "poor in spirit", "mourned" because of your past transgressions, "hungered and thirsted for righteousness", etc. you have opened the door of your heart and allowed God's Spirit to indwell in you. Over time, you will learn to love, learn compassion, learn patience and so on, because the Holy Spirit will prompt you and convict you of your shortcomings in these areas. You will want to grow in the likeness of Christ, even though you will often fall short.
      These are the indicators of a true conversion. Read 2 Peter 1:1-8 for Peter's affirmation of these principles. God bless you SleeplessOC.

    He says the kjv confusing on james 2 because it seems to put faith and works against each other. Actually that why the kjv is right. Remember, beg talking about salvation here. Kjv fits perfectly than with apostle Paul's teaching of if it's of works, then it's no longer grace, and if its of grace it's no longer of works. The two can't mix when talking of salvation or justification before God.

      Perhaps the difference is that faith has to be the kind of faith that produces good works to be saving faith; but you are not saved by the works; so this means that even only a small amount of good works as a response to faith is enough to indicate you have saving faith?

      Editors (Philosophy Now) I've heard it put like this. How you live after being saved is evidence of your salvation. So those that love by faith do good works because they are being transformed by the holy spirit into the type of person who would do good things. And because they, out of love and obedience to God and love and service to their neighbors, wish to serve in the same way they were given such a rich gift as salvation.

Putting the cart before the horse. We are saved first at the point of faith Christ Acts:16:31, at that point we receive 39 things from God. Things like eternal life, the filling of the HS. Sealing of the HS. Put in union with Christ ect. .This is before we ever produce the first act of good works or obedience. This is the second phase of Christian life. As we take in the word and grow spiritually from babies in Christ to mature, we produce good works and grow more obedient to his commands..Remember we still have the old sin nature to contend with.

      Interesting...I don't think we were listening to the same sermon.

      Too many preachers completely ignore what you call "the second phase." Alistair is warning those who claim to be believers (and may have been for quite some time) but NEVER get to "the second phase" - THAT is false faith or dead faith.
