I'm in Parkersburg, West Virginia, USA, where I live with my Bristol, England born husband. While I haven't seen much tatting done in this area, I can recall in my hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania, my mother and several aunts creating everything from tiny doll's dresses to lovely snowflake ornaments in what they called tatting. Thank you for your excellent explanation of the process. It's so good to know that this elegant art is not being lost to time.

Congrats on being the second google result for "tatting lace"! (right after Wikipedia)
I was watching V. Birchwood's 500 Years of Lace History ft. Elena Kanagy-Loux, and the pictures of tatting came up and I thought: I NEED to see if I can learn that. I looks like it might be reasonably achievable. How complicated is it, and how much stuff do I need? I MUST look that up immediately! And I think, based on this, it might be a good fit for me! Any craft that's an excuse for variegated rainbow string/thread/yarn... (not that I really stuck with knitting, but that ball of rainbow yarn sure was enjoyable!)
Clearly I'm going to have to come back to this when I have the tools, to follow along. Until then, your voice is a lovely accompaniment to my mending.

I am in upstate NY. Very good video watching from side to see if better than front to back. Boy are yarn sizes confusing!
Hello, yes sizes are confusing, bugger the number, smaller the yarn
What i meant was an 8 in DMC prtke cotton=20 in Lizbeth cordonett. So I have several spools of fine thread that i thought was thicker. Found out later that cording is preferred over yarn no matter if they are same size.

Watching from Sebring, Florida…want to learn this to make butterflies to use as “buttons” on my baby booties….i have the metal shuttle just like the one in your video…the bobbin comes out…..I find that using the metal shuttle, my thread seems to catch the hook on the end and ultimately breaks…..so frustrating….just learning how to do this…
Maybe try with a plastic shuttle. It’s a bit like crochet hooks or knitting needles, everyone has their preferences
