These engineering masterpieces are still flying! Many have only been maintained, not fully restored
There's something very special about the sound of those engines. The sound of history maybe. What a plane. Magnificent.
A thing of beauty! There's something special about 1930's & 40's technology. Raw, pure human engineering. Something lost in today's all computer based systems and designs.
So true 👍🏼🇮🇳
😊
Dieselpunk
The era when everything was authentic not some poor chinese and ghetto technology mixed

I cannot look at a B17 without thinking of the work and sacrifices my dad went thru as a gunnery instructor on B17s during WWIII.
Thank you Dad and thank you to all those like you whom sacrificed to help keep this country free !!!
Pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale !

Quite an advance your dad!!!!. World War 3 has not started yet
Had the pleasure of flying in the B17 Aluminum Overcast several yrs back & sat in the radio compartment wondering what these guys thought of before takeoff 80yrs ago. Brought up goosebumps. God bless them all.
I don't think it can be said enough times about the courage those boys had.
My son and I flew on the Sentimental journey in Colorado. It was the most thrilling experience of our lives. I went to see her again in 2019 in the hanger. These planes our part of our history and younger generation should see them.
My profile picture was taken in the pilot's seat of this incredible bird. I even had the privilege to help walk the props through, for a test run after a repair. Many thanks to everyone involved with keeping this special piece of history in the air! It's an incredible machine, with an incredible crew!
0:19 this beautifully piece of history of engineering is like music to my ears
How can you not feel proud and patriotic when you see these beasts, give me goosebumps.
These things make me feel proud and patriotic and I’m not even American
How can you not feel scared when you are German, allthough this is a brilliant machine....
My Father was a Radio Operator and Waste gunner on a B-17 in the 8th Air Force in WWII. He was 18 when he started flying missions over Europe .
I toured this plane thirty years ago. I was not ready for the emotional impact when I sat in the pilot's seat. Those brave young men flew planes like this to save MY freedom, even though I was not yet born. I owe them my deepest gratitude!

My flight aboard this magnificent masterpiece is booked for 3 weeks from today. I pray the weather holds out.
Update - it did, despite a 5-hour maintenance delay for a test flight (these things don't like to sit for a week and not be started). Uploaded the takeoff from the radio room to my channel.
I had the chance a few years back to see her when she stopped in sheridan wyoming. What a beautiful plane. Thank you to all who flew her in the great war and thank you to all of you who are keeping this peace of history alive for future generations. Let it be a reminder that freedom is never free. Thanks to all the men and women of are armed forces.
They had to be fearless and scared shitless all at the same time.
What a BEAUTIFUL bird! God bless you folks for taking care of this incredible relic of history!
Our pleasure!
The epitome of beauty in motion! No plane ever looked so good doing what it should! God bless y’all who care for this airplane
These planes are getting older and so are the pilots/maintainers. How can the next generation ensure these stay alive? Man, what an amazing historical aircraft.
Commemorative Airforce has a cadet program to train younger pilots and crew :)
I'm three generations behind the ones that piloted these. There are a handful of millennials that really appreciate this technology and strive to maintain it. Granted my experience is with cars and my collection consists of some from the 1960's at the earliest, but if I was ever charged with maintaining a piece of history like this, I'd spare no expense in my efforts.
I Saw Sally B do the same at Duxford UK early spring 2002. It was going full throttle with the parking brakes on, shaking its tail. What a sound those engines produced!
The greatest generation ever lived!!!
What a beautiful site. Back in the 70's and early 80's I was attached to a medium range bomber. The A-6 Intruder VA-34 BLUEBLASTERS. We worked off the JFK-CV67 and later moved over to the Dwight D Eisenhower CVN69 and broke that carrier in brand new. I totally love the nostalgia fleet. That 17 is beautiful. Thank you for sharing and giving me some awesome memories. 😊
As associated with this 4 engine plane I lived about 10 miles from St.Louis airport as a child. This was 1950's when all commercial planes were same engines as this bomber. I have deep seated memory of the sound these planes made when taking off. The sound was a grand roar.
What a thrill it must be to fly her. I had the privilege of taking a tour when I worked at the airport in Chattanooga, TN a few decades ago. Dang, that sounds bad! LOL.
It is such a cool bird. When it stopped by over here in Idaho, I got to go tour it as well.
I used to watch this B17 take off and land all day in the summer time in Chico, California, when it was a fire fighting bomber. I was glad to see it retsored back to its WWII glory.
There is no video that does these monsters justice. I witnessed Aluminum Overcast start up and take off. They’re so loud and are the best engines I’ve ever heard run. It’s like 4 supercharged pulling trucks going off at once.
Nice to see the props actually turning, unlike some of the other videos. Love the smoke belch on the radials!
Having worked at our local airport for over 25 years, I can't count the times I've witnessed this. C.A.F. always visited once a year with this ole' gal and stayed a week.
Four radials on a B-17 - the sound of victory!
There is no other sound like this on Earth. I go see the old warbirds every time they come to Tulsa.
I live 1.5 miles south of where she resides. It's great to hear those radial engines every Saturday morning circling the airfield!
Imagine the sky is full of those, what a sound.
There is an airshow over Milwaukee this weekend. I was outside grilling brats in my backyard Saturday.
Three harrier flew overhead.
We don't normally hear any aircraft ( luckily) aside from news helicopters or occasional holding pattern big Jets
Often greeted with a fireworks display by the locals...
Salute to those persons, who worked on piston engines. And flown these aircrafts. I too worked on DC. Dakota engine in 1982.
Absolutely beautiful airplane!
Anyone watching ‘Master’s of Air’ that’s just been released? Fantastic watch! Really serves as a reminder of the sacrifice too.
Heard it today in New Orleans and ran outside to look, can't mistake the sound of those 4 engines 😎 thanks for the show today 😇
In the late 1960's and early 70's my Air Force ROTC instructor was a retired B 17 pilot (Col. Thayer C Harper) who flew over Germany during WW2. Thank you, Col., for your courage and bravery.
Those were some young men with huge balls flying those cans back then !!!
I got to fly to this b-17 this past summer when she came to Bozeman Montana. What an incredible experience it was! Highly recommended for anyone who’s an airplane enthusiast. You won’t be disappointed! It’s an experience that you’ll never forget
Do you know if this was the one once owned by the Lynch family in Billings, and also appeared in the movie Far and Away? It looks awful familiar, but that was back in the 80’s and Lynch’s sold their planes thereafter.
Hello from Rock Hill, SC, today on 6/5/24 got to see this very same aircraft on the tarmac at the local airport, quite a thrill for this Viet Nam era Air Force Vet
I had the pleasure to walk through "Sentimental Journey"'s fuselage while she landed in Penticton BC a few years ago. Tight chambers I'd say. No wonder the crew had some bad experiences over Germany in WWII.
Yep, proof that a war machine can also be a beautiful machine with a lovely 'voice'. Thanks for posting.
Forever Grateful
Thank you
B 17 flying fortress in the legends 🇺🇲
She's so foxtrotting awesome. Love this grand ole Lady. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Years ago, she came to Great Falls, Montana (where I lived at the time). The airport there sits on a butte outside and above the city. My house was a mile or two away across the Missouri River. I was in my house when I heard a loud noise. I went outside and looked over to the airport. Sentimental Journey was spooling up her engines and she was rattling my teeth. When she took off, it was an amazing sight. I listened to planes take off from that airport dozens of times a day. But when a B-17 takes off, you really take notice. She sounded like nothing else. Unforgettable!
Very impressive video, but to really appreciate this it must be seen up close and personal. Then you can feel the visceral power of those big radials. Keep 'em flying!
I had the chance to see her when she came to Logan, Utah last summer. A beautiful bird, and a marvel of engineering for her time. Thanks for preserving this piece of history.
good to see all the guns in place.
I've seen this beauty fly over quiet a few times 😀
It is Absolutely Beautiful ✝️🇺🇸😀
Truly a beautiful aircraft.
Il faut garder ces témoins de l'histoire de l'aviation .Ils sont vraiment magnifiques et nous font toujours rêver !
Sentimental Journey is such a beauty.
my grandfather flew this to a few shows when he was alive. i also got to tour this aircraft at falcon field. such a cool plane.
such a beautiful sound
Beautiful plane, the engines sound awesome.
I agree with you about the thirties and forties technology these bombers for just phenomenal and the jobs that they had to do I hope we never have to do this again but you're right I beautiful machine
What a beauty and what sacrifices made those men in WWII. Just respect.
What a beautiful sound
I live down the road from Falcon Field, home of this magnificent machine, and never tire of the times it flies over the house!
Also saw a start up in person! Awesome!!
You ever get to Mesa Az it’s a must see!
😎❤️🇺🇸
dude i used to volunteer there. have you ever seen the avenger next to the phantom its huge!
@@cafhead Yes!! Amazing how big it is.
Look up “Loyce Deen” ….. he was the only Navy member that was buried at sea in his Avenger in WW2.
A reminder to Never Forget!!🙏🔥❤️🇺🇸😎
I walked thru that plane in Farmington N M when it toured there like 20 years ago bought a deck of cards it did a fly around city n the sound was amazing
wonderful. both engines start up .. amazingng
I wonder what it looked and sounded like when hundreds of these bombers would fill the sky.. Amazing technology. My dad was a mechanic in England during WWII and worked on the Rolls Royce Merlin and Bristol Hercules engines of the Halifax heavy bomber.
wow! thank you for this!
Tip: stay off the zoom button.. ;-) Marvelous Magnificent Machine ! Thanks !
What a Bird. Thank You so much.
With engine sound it is magic.
Absolutely awesome!😊😊😊
Absolutely lovely video of our “Betty” (Sentimental Journey) 😁🇺🇸! Can’t wait until she’s home for the Winter (I live about 5 miles west of CAF Airbase Arizona (Falcon Field, Mesa, Arizona, where this video was shot) 😁!
Produced under license contract by Donald Douglas Aircraft Long Beach California 1944.
“ keep ‘em flying “ 🇺🇸

I worked on the engines of sentimental journey and bonded with every ground crewman of an airplane in WW2
Excellent sound! And slower shutter so the props look like they’re turning!! Very cool. To bad these wonderful planes were designed and made for war, huh?
Thanks for noticing the little things most people don't!
What a sweet sound
Built a huge model of a B-17G by the Lindbergh Line model company when I was 8 years old lin 1956.
Красивая машина, а звук работы двигателей просто божественный !!!
To me The B - 17 Was A Beautiful Plane 😊
Such a Beautiful Plane ❤ It.
Imagine being a youg German civilian in Stuttgart or Hamburg in 1944, and seeing dozens of the bombers flying over in formation! Both awe inspiring and devastating, knowing whats about to happen.
Masters of the Air
Q bella máquina y muy buen recuerdo de lo mejor de la época 👍
Very Nice
Impressive!
I got to ride on this very B-17 about 20 years ago at Gilespie Field in El Cajon. The crew chief told me that 3 of the engines were made by Studebaker.
Man I love airplanes. All of them!
Never been into planes but that’s beautiful
nothing like going back in time👍
My dad's job at the end of the war. he wanted to be a pilot but he washed out. So they assigned him the job of recovering the bodies that they could put back together put them in a bag. tag them and make a notification for the family. Try getting a kid nowadays to do that
In 2010 I went to Air Show in Willoughby, Ohio called “Gathering of Eagles” and for $400.00 I was able to fly in a B-17 called YANKEE LADY, it was very emotional because my Uncle Norman was a waist gunner on a B-17, Our Grandparents really knew how to build things that lasted.!
A million thumbs up!
Still the most beautiful bird in the CAF. And it's still crewed by some of the best guys around!
Holy Bananas, I can't even imagine what it would sound like to hear 50 of these flying in formation over you. Just incredible.
Wow what a sound😊
Operator simply ace!
I adore it.
takingk off amazing..
Gregory Peck as General Savage.
“ this group has become known as a hard luck group,, well I don’t believe in luck, so we’re going back to flying fundamentals to see if that’s the problem “
“ looks like they’ve heard about the 918th “
sweetness.
Great plane...and great video - except for the headache-inducing fast in and out zooming.
Amazing
I used to talk to the pilot who flew this plane out of Falcon Field in Mesa AZ back in 1985 when I lived there next door almost. He was going to take me and a couple others up, when on a practice flight, it had to belly land, because a landing gear never came down. I moved a year or two later and never got to go up. I knew they rebuilt her. I always wished I would have gotten a ride. I'm 65 now and live in Oregon. Does anyone remember her in AZ?
She is still in AZ.
Had a chance to tour her at Falcon Field in 1980. Still had a lot of work to do on her. They hadn't gotten the tail guns restored. I hope to get another chance to see her again one day.
swinging that big ol ham standard yeah!
