    Oilers fan here Todd is a good coach he did so much with the growth of Draisaitl. He told Leon he didn’t have to be the number 2 guy on the team and after that conversation Leon became one of the greats on pace to win the heart this year. Todd is a good fit for Detroit.

      I don't disagree, however, Todd did lose the room in Edmonton and wasn't able to build on their 2016-17 success. He has proven to be a coach who can't get over the hump in the playoffs. But in terms where Detroit is at as a team that needs to breakthrough in the regular season after a long drought (like the Oilers were), this should be a good hire.

      @@TheMikeyb86 Yeah, not a bad coach, but in 17-18 and 18-19 (until he was fired), that team wasn't super good, but the Oilers were woefully underperforming, particularly defensively, they definitely weren't well coached near the end of Todd's tenure.

    Interesting move. As a Kings fan, I would say that TMac is a respectably good coach who can get a team up to a certain level, but he has never proven that he can flog a team and drive them to the highest level of success. Like how Terry Murray built the foundation for the Kings teams that won in '12 and '14, but it was Sutter who drove them over the finish line. I liked him, and I wished for his sake as much as the Kings' that he had enjoyed greater playoff success with them. But this means that he may be the right coach for Detroit given where they are right now.

    • @randombutrelevant
      @randombutrelevant 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Talent drove them over the finish line, it was not Sutter LOL... how'd he work out in CGY? LA won in spite of sutter, not because of him. That team was stacked and just needed time to mature, picks come around etc.

    @MarkCMG 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

    Thanks for the video! McLellan apparently has the sixth most wins of current coaches. He's got 23rd all-time, it seems. When a team has multiple problems, you need to remove some of the variables to fix the team, one at a time.

  • @zachdotson997
    @zachdotson997 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +13

    I think it comes down to what you're able to get out of your players, regardless of whether you lose or not. Most of the losses this year have come as a result of lousy efforts, I'd rather see them go down fighting

    • @randombutrelevant
      @randombutrelevant 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      LOL... it ain't effort bro, it is the roster itself, it is bad, very, very bad. They just don't have the talent to make it work against other teams on any kind of consistent basis. Lalonde could go coach FLA... they would be? About where they are right now. Maurice could come coach DET, they would be? About where they are right now.

    • @audibletapehiss3764
      @audibletapehiss3764 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      If the team is underachieving at all, TMac will make them better. Sure there are issues with the roster. But this is a coach who gets everybody on board with systems and structure and accountability. That's his bread and butter. He'll get you into the playoffs next year, he might even come close this year. He has few peers in this league when it comes to climbing from bottom 5 to playoff team.
      Now once you get to the playoffs, then it just depends... if you run into an opposing coach who refuses to properly match lines or make in-game adjustments the way Todd refuses, then it'll be preseason game plan vs preseason game plan. If not, you're cooked.

      The Wing's d-core took a step back losing ghost, Walman, and Mataa. It's clear that Husso or Lyon aren't even the medium term solution in goal (Talbot is decent but he's getting older). That said, we should be getting more out of the team that we have so far. It really seems like Lalonde got into the trap the Blashill did with constantly shuffling lines, having no clear identity, and a d-scheme that obviously leaves the goalies high and dry more often than not. Hopefully McClellan can at least set a scheme in place to at least stop the bleeding.

    I genuinely believed the style of hockey Lalonde had hypnotized this team into trying to play was holding them back. Plenty of people are looking at the roster and making it sound like one of the worst in the league. But it's not much different from last year, and last year's Wings only missed the playoffs because they suddenly forgot how to play hockey in March...which seems like the same problem this year.
    Even you, Shannon, predicted this was a playoff team before the season started. The roster is not that bad, Lalonde just couldn't get the best out of it. In his 2.5 seasons, the Wings never really looked like they had their style of play figured out. There were good stretches, and that's why I think Lalonde could be a good coach elsewhere and I wish him well, but it just didn't work here.

      @jaredkomoroski Berggren and Tarasenko should have replaced Sprong and Perron. Comparable or possibly better players. Gustafsson was supposed to replace some of Gostisbehere's production, and Edvinsson in full time makes up for Walman. Fabbri doesn't have a clear comparison, but Kasper wasn't guaranteed to be in the lineup and him being in the NHL is just as good as having a depth player like Fabbri.
      There's no obvious downgrade from last season.

    The only requirement I have for McClellan is that he makes sure the team plays entertaining hockey even if they lose all the remaining games left. The season is already over so all focus should be on not continuing to be booed and that the crowd flows back.
    Firing the head coach will not solve anything for RW, as the problem is also S.Y's responsibility. If he doesn't do anything major during the TDL, there is a lot to say that his time has come in RW as well. There is another alternative for the owner and that is to focus on S.Y's nepotism and direct his gaze towards his favorites on the staff, Kroner, Lidas and Co. This is simply about the organization's culture of being winners and not losers or that our young people start to think it's okay to lose, as everyone knows our Vet´s already does.

    • @randombutrelevant
      @randombutrelevant 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Entertaining hockey requires a roster with talent, it is a talent gap, not a coaching gap that is the problem here. TM cannot 'up the talent' of this team, there will be no 'new system' or 'identity' or 'culture' that comes in and makes magic. This team might finish .030 pts/game better under this coach vs Lalonde... so what does that even do?

    This doesn't fully turn things around for Detroit, I don't think we make the playoffs still, but I think the Wings are better than what was being presented. The guys were playing like a squirt team and nothing was changing game to game. Another part is people were starting to get fed up with Yzerman because nothing was changing and he is the person to change something. Personally, I think trading Maatta and Walman over Petry and Chiarot is a boneheaded move but with what we have right now something had to change. At worst, the locker room is going to feel responsible for Lalonde being tossed and will maybe start to try a little harder than what they've been doing. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

    I don’t think that this is enough to turn the team’s fortunes around. However, LaLonde seemed to be in over his head and did not have the savvy, or the experience, to work through this drought. Lack of talent in key areas, especially on defense, underperforming highly paid veterans, and burdensome, unmovable contracts still plague this team.

    The Wings achilles' heel has been poor puck movement, especially from the blue line, and there's probably no fixing that this year. If Mclellan gets the Wings playing more physical, consistent hockey and implements a more effective PK I think that's probably a step in the right direction. This roster isn't a playoff team, but they shouldn't have been this bad either.

    Red Wings fans know the Holland "Debuild" started in 2016. The actual rebuild started when Yzerman took over. Holland left the cabinets bare and stole all the copper on his way out. Detroit has had no luck in the draft lottery, but has done well with what they've been given.
    I knew they would be worse this season than last, but this season has been a nightmare. It's been obvious for months that Lalonde's system has not been working. He should have been let go after Thanksgiving. It's not all his fault, this roster is a downgrade from last year, especially paying SJ to take Walman.

    Lalonde isnt the only problem, but you can't fire the whole team. It was still Lalondes job to coach the team in a positive manner. Many interviews with the team players mention lack of excitement with the team and attitudes. The last two seasons to this one, Detroit progressively got worse and that really dampens a teams spirit. We'll have to wait and see if Mcellan is the coach to turn the attitude of the team around i guess

    I can see Detroit having a bump in their record with a few more wins with having a new coach. However, I really think that they are not done with changes to the team and the roster if they're going to have any chance of making the playoffs this year.

    The team had a lot of turnover in the offseason and I think the only positional group the improved was the goaltending. A lot of the replacements (Tarasenko most notably) have been abysmal and some of the older guys (Kane specifically) haven’t been great.
    I don’t think this is a bad move, but I don’t think the team is righting the ship this season. Lalonde definitely lost the locker room at some point this year, and to be honest, I have not really cared for him during his tenure just based off of his press conferences.
    I also don’t think the Yzerman rebuild is failing, regardless of what the media thinks. The young players who have been given ice time this year have had flashes of greatness. A few more years and I think the young core can take the team deep into the playoffs.

    Not sure it turns things around either, but it was needed. The locker room was lost and has been for some time. This gets a new voice in there and hopefully a slightly more offense minded game plan moving forward. Getting outshot in every single game has been brutal to watch. If we lose 6-5 and had 35+ shots in the game, fine so be it at least the game is exciting, but these 3-1, 4-0 games with 24 shots in the entire game is god awful to watch.

    Hopefully McClelland can get them to play 500 the rest of the year but I doubt it. I don’t see them making the playoffs this year, I hope I'm wrong. I thought they started to fizzle out at the end of last year and honestly was hoping they wouldn’t make the playoffs as they would have been annihilated in the first round the way they were playing. I thought their best game this season was against the leafs a few weeks back, seemed like a full team effort. If they play like that they will start winning. I think Kane will come around, he’s still a great stick handler and great as the qback on the power play. At time Larkin tries to carry the team on his back and tries to do too much, if the rest of team did their job he’d be more productive. Seider is a saving grace, can’t count the number of goals he’s prevented. Go Wings!

    No he wasn't the only issue and no they aren't built to win much this year, but after moderate success last year, they regressed. Plus their problems last season (not good team defense, not starting games on time, etc) were not corrected so far this year. And with his contact up after this year, there's nothing he's done that says "contract extension" so get it over with now. In the end, they should be better than they are this year and coaching is the first thing you can change.

    Lalonde had to go. Every Red Wing not named Lucas Raymond was under performing his career PPG stats. The only thing keeping them even somewhat competitive has been their goaltending. It was clear Lalonde lost the room. This season is lost - money puck only has them at 1.4% to make the playoffs. I just want to see McLellan get his system in place and develop the young players. Hopefully the Wings get a top 4 pick and will be ready to bounce back next year.

That said, I hope at least he brings in a new voice and a new scheme. Lalonde seemed to fall in the same trap that Blashill did with constantly shuffling lines and not getting the players ready for each game. We're still lacking a lot of depth on the blue line and in goaltending. I really wish Cossa got at least one start when he was up, but sadly that didn't happen.

And yeah it is Yzermans fault with the roster construction for sure. I'm still kind of lenient with Yzerman just because of the guys he's drafting. I think once all he's young prospects get up here to the wings like danielson, sandine pelikka, mbn, the 2 goalies cossa and Augustine, and maybe even that Russian kid buchelnikov. If he doesn't build a good team around all those kids and we aren't going deep with them, that's probably when I'll turn on him. He could definitely use a better pro scout as well. A lot of the names are probably spelled wrong, my apologies if so.

    I've been calling for this for a year. Since the Ottawa home game where Larkin got cheap-shotted after the whistle, and Lalonde's comment after that game was to thank the Ottawa player for accepting a fight later on. He deserved to lose the room after that. But even beyond that, his inability to consistently motivate the team along with his O and D zone systems, which made the Wings terribly easy to play against, necessitated a change. Is the roster worse than last year? Yes. Is it now all on Yzerman? Yes. But Lalonde was in over his head as a head coach in the NHL and deserved to be let go.

      Bro, seen this roster? TM will be lucky to get maybe 3-4 more total wins vs what Lalonde would have. This will move the needle virtually zero. You can talk 'culture' and 'identity' and 'systems' AFTER you have a roster. We have??? Larkin, Seider, Raymond. Don't give me this trash about ADB, he is the most inconsistent and most overrated wing. Copp, Compher, Rasmussen, Veleno, then the unneeded at least 3 d we have, that should have been weaponized cap space. Petry is on our team. Chiarot, Tarasenko. Do you not see what is happening at all? You got your hopes up last year with us being close, that was just a blip. Did he need to get fired? Sure, but it ain't gonna change a thing. Watch

    Is the roster a great one? not even close, however its not nearly as bad as their record. The system Lalonde was trying to play requires a lot of speed, and there isnt a lot of speed on the redwings. Trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Constantly giving up leads over and over because they turtle as soon as they get it. Get a lead>>dump puck over and over giving the puck back to the opposition>>rinse, repeat get scored on. Then on top of a bad system for this constructed roster, throw in the fact that the players have looked like they dont care, and i'll circle this back to i think a big reason they look lifeless and disinterested is because they hate the system Lalonde was trying to force them to play.
