  • The understanding of "fear" takes many paths, at times it takes us on a labyrinthal journey of unlearning, learning and surprising discoveries. Here two philosophers come together to discuss the topic fear(ism), as Dr. R. Michael Fisher (Canada) is an international expert on the topic.
Dr. Ramala Sarma (India) is a scholar in Buddhist Studies www.researchgate.net/profile/...
The book "Philosophy of Fearism: A Primer" (2022) by Fisher is a good entry level to this work and topic.
The book Fisher recommended to Dr. Sarma in this talk: Robin, C. (2004). Fear: The History of a Political Idea. Oxford Univ. Pr.
The chapter I wrote in Dr. Sarma's first book is:
Fisher, R. M. (2021). Calling philosophy from fear to fearlessness: A global emergency. In R. Sarma (Ed.), Understanding mind, consciousness and understanding (pp. 92-114). New Delhi, India: Rawat Prakashan.

We have always thought of overcoming the fear but never tried to understand fear...
    Great concept ❤️🔥

For clarity: in the video I say that my original version of fearism is unique since 1990 and many scholars and researchers have utilized the basic definition in their work, especially popular in Migration Studies. When I met Subba in late 2014 we combined our work on fearism, and I now use my original definition as well as Subba's definition under a "theory of fearism"--but it is important to know that I still use fearism-t (t = toxic) for my oriiginal cultural/political usage as the subtle underbelly of terrorism. Subba and his followers do not use that version fearism-t. In the spontaneous conversation with Dr. Sarma there is no distinction of fearism and fearism-t being made and I forgot to mention it. So, most of the time the conversation is about Subbaian fearism. Also, Dr. Sarma and I did not get into talking about other fear+ (fear-plusing) moves I make in my philosophy--one of them is adding (') marks to the term fear --that is, 'fear'. This is core to my epistemology of fearwork(ing) overall. Another topic for another time. You can read about this in any of my free articles online just go to Google Scholar and type in "R. Michael Fisher" and "Fear" or 'Fear'

I misunderstood Dr. Sarma in the first minute of the conversation. I thought she was referring to a paper she wrote on "From Fear to Fearism..." but, later after I remembered that it was my own chapter she invited me to write in 2020-21 for her edited book (see this video description for the reference).

When I talk about "psychology of fear" as dominating our knowledge about fear overall, that is true. I am offering a transdisciplinary "fearology of fear" as the alternative--but be clear, both are needed, they are complementary and yet, they both are required to critique each other and mutually they can grow as ways of knowing fear--and, yes, ultimately, of managing fear--transforming fear--transmuting fear--transcending fear...all part of the path of fearlessness. Also note: the best of a "psychology of fear" ought to be a psychology of defence mechanisms--and, that is not always the case. So I see a lot of improvement can happen in the psychology of fear when it is viewed from the lens of a fearology of fear.

Michael and Doctor Sharma, that was a wonderful talk about the philosophy of fearism and the trans disciplinary nature of fear as an idea. I would love to see another talk, part two perhaps, where you go, even deeper and broader on the topic of the philosophy of fear from a transdisciplinary perspective, with a significant section about Doctor Sarma’s experience and perspective on fear(ism).
