Great video! After a few years of doing foreclosed houses I decided maybe I should go for more, because I always was in the landscape field. I am now 33, this will be my second year full time once the winter ends. I would say you touched on every point I have dealt with and at the end of the day you just need to keep on going! Keep it up man!
Great video and everything you said was facts. I'm 45, and didn't start till I was 37, and became fulltime at 40. The work is very rewarding, you can make a good living and there is a certain degree of peace you get from this line of work. However, it's very hard work.. This goes without saying.. If you work ethic isn't stellar, then this line of work isn't for you..
Great video, I'm on my 3rd season just to the south of you in Lawton. You hit a lot of good points in the video. One of the biggest things thats helped me and you touched on it as well is having the right equipment and how much easier it makes getting the job done.
I find it interesting that we both put out similar videos at basically the same time. I noticed u trimmed the beard. Not gonna lie, I like the trimmed look better, I have never really like the long beards. Great video and yes lots of truths, hard work but can for sure be worth it.
In Texas you don’t need to worry about your patrimony if you are not LLC BECAUSE is protected by the state so sole proprietor is good and just make sure to have business insurance...
Matt, this was a super helpful video. I'm a military retiree starting my lawn mowing business in the spring. I'm planning to start small and not going to take on more than I can handle. My goal is to provide a quality job at a reasonable price. I'm curious about getting insurance for the business. What are typical insurances that a simple lawn mowing businesses carry? Thank you so much for making the video.
Year one, $200 troy bilt rider, pushed up ramps into an s10 pickup with a push mower in front and an old ryobi trimmer. Customers came slow at first, I'd work an hour for $35-$40. Now, I have a ztr, trailer, a pair of stihl fourmix trimmers and can do $50-$60 an hour. I have no crew, just me. Sole proprietor. Insured. Part time hours, grossing $3000-$3500 per month.
Well thank you! Grit and backbone for sure. I am excited about possibly going full time next year and I can tell I'm gonna have to have more of both of those things
On the oil change aspect.... I'm waaay late to the game on this video... I'm a Marine Technician by trade.... I have a tool that will change your life. I moved from Florida to Tennessee... The boat game here is not like Florida. I ended up in a spot building high pressure pipe cleaning systems for the plumbing industry... I have an oil extractor. It's a common piece of kit for a mobile marine technician... I can pull oil out of 2 big block "Go Fast" boats in a single service.... The engines I work with now are tiny in comparison..... HOWEVER!!!!. My oil extractor from PANTHER has come in very handy.... I eliminated tipping engines and jetting carts to drain oil.... It's a suction driven pump with a straw... Can be hooked to an air hose.... Cold ❄️ oil, doesn't pull very well
Glad I found this channel- it inspired me to follow my dream. Im Leaving my 40k a month job to start lawn care business. I love that kind of work and hate my job. At least I’ll be happy

@@lawncarelittleguy9337 hey brother i live in texas and im trying to start my own lawn care business. I know nothing about pricing, what should i charge on a regular size residential yard for the front only?
@@johnny99211 hi ro Lando! That seems like a cut and dry kind of question but the answer is much more complicated. I'm fixing to do a Q and A type video tomorrow hopefully. I can answer it with more detail on that. But for now, you have to figure out what "regular" means. That's a very unclear description. If I were you for now, I would do a bid based off how long you think it will take you to do the job in minutes. The industry standard for mowing seems to be a buck a minute. I hope that helps for now and I look forward to doing the video!
Great video, inspiring in so many ways. I've worked for companies for almost 30 years and I'm an avid lawncare enthusiast. I dont have a pro riding mower, but most of my other tools are pro grade so I'm hoping theyll hold up until I can build up a client base. As an accountant, I don't think you should be a LLC. You could mess up a lawn and the liability is very little. Like you said the taxes are easier. LLC require accountants that are pretty pointless for a small business like yours. In your experience how many times have you damaged property and the customer went after you legally? You're doing great! Thank you for the video!
Hi I’m in the U.K. love your video and am starting a lawn care business with a view to be up and running next spring, I’m in the process of acquiring gear, have invested in a good mower, brush cutter and blower. The only stumbling block now is a decent van, so I may sell our second car to help fund it. Next on my agenda is promoting my business. How did you get your first customers? Praying for you.
That's awesome Tony! Congratulations! I started just going door to door and knocking. I don't nessessarily recommend that though. It's free other than the time it takes. But, people here don't particularly enjoy door to door sales. I would do for hangers in a really tight area. Most cost effective and it focuses your service area. It does take lots of time though
Since you do your own maintenance, how do you get that as a right off? Does your accountant want a recipe for each maintenance, blade sharpening, oil change etc. Or you can bunch it all together and just give them one amount for the season?
Great question! Recipes are important for sure. Doing things yourself saves labor cost but there are part procurement costs. The cost of the parts and the cost for going to get the parts. The parts themselves require reciepts and are categorized as "equipment maintenance". But the mileage is claimed separately on a mileage report I give to my accountant.
@@ewrgaming with practice it will become second nature to socialise I consider myself a solitary person but overtime I gradually got comfortable and assertive talking to customers just from taking action
Most people can own their own business, any sort. There are many misconceptions about being in business. No boss, work when you want, make tons of money!! First of all, every one of your customers IS a boss. Lawn mowing, nature is the boss. I can do whatever I want...after all 56 of my lawn customer’s lawns look great. Tons of cash....I’m a one man operator/owner and I’m limited by how much I can get done and how much the standard rates are for my work. I have been running a property management LLC for 28 years. I don’t have sick days, I,ve worked every holiday almost every year, no benefits unless I buy them, very few vacations. If I’m injured...so what, no work no money, no work no customers, they want service not excuses. Unless you are dedicated, self motivated, and willing to do whatever has to get done every day, let someone else take the responsibility and just show up to their job. Anyone can do this, but many fail along the way. To me this lifestyle is like being a farmer, the work is endless, the days long, the harvest can be great but there is a high cost.
Yes it can be just as you say. I am looking into some of these businesses that have managed to minimize some of those negatives. Have you ever listened to Mike Andes. He has some very interesting perspectives
@@lawncarelittleguy9337 I have not listened to Mike Andes, I will check him out. I have chosen to be an owner/ operator, with no employees or partners that accounts pretty much for the negative aspects that I have experienced through the years, EVERYTHING needs to be done by myself and done when it has to get done….very little wiggle room. Of course the first 15 years of my work as a carpenter, I was an employee and for many of my years that my business painted full exteriors and commercial projects I teamed up with one or two other painters, those situations also had negative aspects. As an older person these days I find life a balance of both positive and negative features, a rolling trade off of outcomes. Over the last 5 years I have found the simple but at times demanding chore of mowing people’s grass to be a good fit for this tough old buzzard. I am not opposed to reinventing myself/ business…..again, but if this is the best it gets, I’m totally cool with that. As an artist/wood carver during my off season I can see my work increasing in value, my goal is to taper off lawns and make more saw dust! It’s all good.
It sounds like you have a great path ahead. Mike Andes is focused on the other path of growing a multi million dollar business but he has some really interesting insight on have employees that can take the burdens off your shoulders. It may just be interesting video for you though. Making saw dust does sound like a really nice way!
Good stuff man ! I’m starting my own lawn care business in the spring I already own everything but I do want a stander zero turn but looking at some used ones . I could just say screw it and wait. But I figured I’ll keep the John deer for back up just in case the stander goes down. But I’ll still always have my Walk behind cubcadet bagger she’s been a great little mower and strong running. .. I have two weed wackers and one blower. Gonna use what I have for the first year see how things go 🤞🏽🤞🏽 I feel good about it and I’m a hard worker so I should be okay lol I have a few friends on standby that will help me if I get in a jam lol wish me luck lol.
This was my 7th season. It was a very interesting one this year. I hired 2 employees and allowed them to do most of the work. Drought led to less lawns mowed, employees are really expensive to hire, and my workers were only part time so they got maxed out on hours due to having other jobs. I didn't make much money in comparison to years past. I don't have final numbers this year yet but I am around 5k take home. Years past doing it all myself was much more profitable at 24k after taxes part time. This year I used Markate as my customer management system with square for credit card processing. I think I will switch to jobber next year.
Matt my 14 year old son wants to start mowing yards and has has several neighbors speak to him about it. We are both wondering how many lawns are to many to complete every week with a push mower weed eater and blower?
That is so cool! So many great businesses started that way. The number of lawns depends on size, complexity, and a person's inclination and availability. But, generally speaking, if he is trying to balance school and mowing lawns, I would try to stay at 1-2 small lawns on school days and 6-10 on one weekend day (I personally don't work Saturdays).
I want to start a lawn care business I was going to start it last year but stuff came up with cancer with my son and exedra exedra and I lost him back in October of 2022 he was 9 years 2 months old and I think about him every day he was my little buddy he always will be but this summer I am definitely wanting to start a lawn care business but I'm curious on some things I don't want to hire anybody I want to do it myself like you do it but do I need to get insurance to protect myself when I'm doing lawns exedra exedra??

Thank you for encouraging me to take the next step of Investing in a bigger mower for next season. Saving all my money. I will pray for you and when you remember, pray for me!
I'm so glad I could encourage you! Did you get that mower?
@@lawncarelittleguy9337 I did!! I got a turf master 30” HDX kohler engine used with 50 hours on it for $1300! Also just bought a 5’x8’ utility trailer!
What a great deal you got! Congratulations!
@@lawncarelittleguy9337 yeah, I knew I had to pick it up before someone else did!
I appreciate your encouragement! And thank you so much for watching!
Great video!!! I will be going full time with my lawn business next year….
Thanks for watching and commenting! Did you go full time this year?
Great video and everything you said was facts. I'm 45, and didn't start till I was 37, and became fulltime at 40.
The work is very rewarding, you can make a good living and there is a certain degree of peace you get from this line of work.
However, it's very hard work.. This goes without saying.. If you work ethic isn't stellar, then this line of work isn't for you..
Great video, I'm on my 3rd season just to the south of you in Lawton. You hit a lot of good points in the video. One of the biggest things thats helped me and you touched on it as well is having the right equipment and how much easier it makes getting the job done.
Man thank you so much I needed to watch this video I will definitely pray for you and your family and you have a subscriber for life right here
Man, thanks Hotrod! I really need to get an update video out there. I've been MIA for too long
Yes get us an update. Hope your business is doing great and hope you and your family are doing well.
So state Texas don’t have too have LLC for ur business my first year as lawn care business trying figure if I need the LLC or not
@@Mexican_gorilla698 Honestly if you are just getting started, don't worry about becoming LLC quite yet. I'd work a full season first
Matt, this was a super helpful video.
Way to go! Keep growing!
Awesome encouragement..... starting soon.. I love this video... thank you for praying...
My pleasure!
Your a great guy. I’m in my 3rd year and it’s still not easy. BUT YOU GOTTA HAVE GRIT AND A BACKBONE
You can do this! If I can do 30k part time I know you can do 40! Be nice, charge a fair price, and do good work.
That thing you mentioned about someone’s body being able to handle a type of job in whatever elements are happening in said job, that’s why those who get into this business should go to the gym and workout.
Wise words, it really encourages me. Thanks man!
New subscriber here. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and may the Lord continue to bless you and your family!
Thank you so much for watching but especially for the blessings! May they return to you many times over!
Good video Matt can't wait to get started and for all this snow to go away
Me too brother! Me too!
Great video and advise. I’m a firm believer in the k.i.s.s. principle. It’s tough work, but you can make a pretty good living.
Mee too! Life is already complicated enough. Why make our businesses complicated too.
Thanks for your inspirational words, may god continue to bless you!
Lord bless you too! Thanks for watching!
@@lawncarelittleguy9337 thanks ill be looking forward to watching your new video.
It is hard your right but the first year is definitely the hardest
The first year was very difficult for sure!
bro good info keep up the good work
Thanks so much!
I just moved to Ardmore Ok.from Texas. So I'm having to start over
How exciting! I actually love ardmore. We camp a couple times a year or at lake Murray
Hey dwyane i currently live in tx and i wanted to know how much to price a front yard only?A regular size residential yard.
Great video, inspiring in so many ways. I've worked for companies for almost 30 years and I'm an avid lawncare enthusiast. I dont have a pro riding mower, but most of my other tools are pro grade so I'm hoping theyll hold up until I can build up a client base. I'll tryin use my lawn tractor some just to help speed things along and try to get me a zero turn or something next year. I appreciate your honesty and Christian values, God bless.
Sounds like you have a great plan going forward!
That means the world to me! You can do this, just start mowing and and stay focused on providing great service

Thanks a million for this video and testimony.
Thx sir for posting. I just started mine and seems like im at the same level as you were at. When he said he had a little Mazda 3 it hurts in the feels, lmao. That's what I have right now but have the equipment to start, what should I do? Not sure I have a connection to use anyone's pickup truck
Thanks for the advice I’m in the same boat my wife is staying home with my son and I’m looking for a side hustle thanks.
Lawn care is a great option!
I started my lawncare gig 9 years ago.my only problem is constant customers I got some I had since day1 then I have pop ups every now then 🙃..it's also hard to advertise to..but no matter it pays the bills
Thank you! I needed to hear this! I agree totally with you...what is it that you have in your possession? Sell it if you have to!
That strategy has worked for me. I know not all would agree with that tho. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the information in the video. My boys are 14 and 12 and they have a long business and they do pretty good with just five push mowers one weed eater One blower and would want to get them a new edger attachment. I'm going to show them this video because I think they really need to see this I'm working on getting them a trailer attachment for their bicycle to help them get more lawns. Again thank you and God bless
Great job Dad! Love to hear about Dads showing the way for their kids. Thanks for watching!
Jeez they have 5 mowers? I guess its nice to have backups but do they really use all 5?
When you mentioned prayer I subscribed 👍🏻
That's awesome! I used to share more about faith and I will, but more one on one.

God bless, such a great video matt! I'm full time lanwcare atm been putting off starting my own thing. Have the llc but not pulled the trigger on getting my own clients. I need to just get out there and do it! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching! Did you get your own thing going this year?
Great video Matt I've been in business for 25 years, it's been a rewarding experience for all the people I've have worked for, but now it's time to pass the torch on retiring after this year, guys a great business, listen to Matt. God Bless.
Thanks so much for your encouragement! Did you end up retiring this season?
As an accountant, I don't think you should be a LLC. You could mess up a lawn and the liability is very little. Like you said the taxes are easier. LLC require accountants that are pretty pointless for a small business like yours. In your experience how many times have you damaged property and the customer went after you legally? You're doing great! Thank you for the video!
Finally! Someone who agrees with me! Lol
I'm glad you didn't give up!!!$$$
I'm here in Oklahoma starting this year 2023. I live in Fort Cobb area. I bought commercial equipment. Any direction on area un tapped yet.
Great advice. Relatable for all. 💪🍀🙏🏻
How do you balance family time, friends, full time job and lawn care?
Since you do your own maintenance, how do you get that as a right off? Does your accountant want a recipe for each maintenance, blade sharpening, oil change etc. Or you can bunch it all together and just give them one amount for the season?
Great question! Recipes are important for sure. Doing things yourself saves labor cost but there are part procurement costs. The cost of the parts and the cost for going to get the parts. The parts themselves require reciepts and are categorized as "equipment maintenance". But the mileage is claimed separately on a mileage report I give to my accountant.
Also ,your video gives me encouragement thank you for that
I'm so glad! I hope your having a great season so far!
Buen video my friend im doing this like a part time here in houston
Thats so cool! Houston is beautiful, and a great place for lawn care!
I’m not very sociable, so I’m wondering how I could find someone to handle customer acquisition for me?
Sounds like this isn't for you then lol. Maybe get a business partner. I work with my cousin. Alot of the time he handles the customer
@@jdude000 I have a business partner but both of us and our wives are actually taking a traveling job making $25 an hour each lol.
Then why do it?
@@omegavetrix5184 because it is better than being told what to do by someone else everyday…it’s my business, not yours.
Go get it!
Great channel God bless you my friend ☺

So 7th or 8 seasons. What's your yearly take in salary? Also what system you use for payment?
I guess the big question is “what do you do all winter?”
Gives me Mr.Roger vibes..I really like this guy.
Lol, I really like this comment!
You mentioned it being February and that it was snowing and if it wasn't snowing that you'd be spraying. If you don't mind the asking Spring for what? Great video I really liked it new subscriber
