Locksport can be a really fun thing for people. I myself am training to become a locksmith, I’ve been interested in locks since I was 6 and have been picking locks since I was 12, I’m mostly self taught, but a lot of the techniques I’ve learned are from bills channel and LPL’s channel. What you will find is everyone has different things they like, everyone has a favorite pick, and it varies from person to person. The interesting thing is that, lock picking is a very difficult skill to learn and teach, it’s not like teaching someone to do a math problem, the thing that makes it so difficult is that when you are SPPing, you are completely blind as to where your pick is in the lock, it requires the ability to feel where the pins are in the lock with your pick. It takes many hours of practice to fully master the skill. I find myself picking locks while in meetings and watching tv, because it just gives my hands something to do. Good luck on your journey to mastering lock picking.
OMG... Thanks Bill... I FINALLY am able to pick the US Paclocks!! Security pins were a challenge to me a few months ago, but now.. not so much. I was able to do 3 different Paclocks in a row... SPP. It wasn't a fluke!! Just wanted to say thank you Sir.
I believe bill has an older video on how to re pin the ones with the rivets, and be able to put them back together. I can’t remember the video number, but I’d say if you search Bosnianbill American lock you should be able to find it. Update: It is video 356 where bill shows how to rekey the sealed American locks with the rivets.
The Master Lock master re-pinning kit comes with the new bottom plate nut and screw as well as the anti-bypass plate. The lock body looks at lot like the American 5200 series lock. The only concern is that some of the models use a 5 pin only core while others can be pinned with 6. My go to lock series is the American 700 and the APTC-14 6 pin core. Resists most brute force attacks, readily up gradable, and inexpensive in padlock terms.
These locks are really a challenge when they've spent some time outside in the elements. I find myself when I come across one hoping its an older American so I can bypass it. Lol . Thanks Bill for your expert tutelage!
I’ve found, that if you can’t pick it, and you can’t bypass it, you go with your last resort and drill it, I’ve drilled so many of those locks it’s unbelievable. And if you are like me and you are a locksmith apprentice or you happen to work for a locksmith, you probably have a ton of cores just laying around, all I do is I rear shim them, and I’ll even use a blank key to rear shim them. Then you repin the core and you are all set. My locksmith has a few filing cabinets and a few buckets full of random locks, and he will just give them away, a lot of them are American locks, and he actually pays me sometimes to pick, bypass, or drill open them and replace the core so that he can sell them, the used locks he usually sells for between half the original price and 3/4 the original price, and they go like hot cakes. Although I’ve found it to be kind of a pain in the butt to repin them, because you can’t use your standard pinning kit, you have to use either an American pinning kit or a master pinning kit.
Out of curiosity, locksporter from across the pond. Have you seen the bypass tool to penetrate the rear core cover/metal piece that stops bypasses on Americans and cheap amazon copies? (not sure on the proper term?) That to me seems like a no brainer to open and rekey for future sales for locksmiths.

That's actually a fun and popular picking challenge. Last one was the "blind like me" challenge posted by "sightless senshi" who is a blind picker. It was great. Look up the videos.
American locks really are fun to pick. Sometimes when I get over-confident and end up struggling I take a pause and think back to the very methodical approach you take to it, and that sorts me out. Thanks for another great video!
I often wonder how much sense it still makes to make locks harder to pick? Do thieves actually bother with trying to pick the better locks or go straight to destructive entry?
At most places a brick through a window is easier and faster then picking a door. It's the deterrent factor to most, and otherwise the "noticeable" theft is the key word.
It depends on the context. Opportunistic theft is always going to be destructive. Residential, too. Commercial or in that kind of zoning is going to be nondestructive because of alarms/security/suspicion
You'll notice that PacLoc locks are marketed towards commercial use and have excellent pick resistance, and Masterlock locks which have atrocious pick resistance are marketed towards consumer use.
If there's no proof of forcible entry an insurance company may deny your claim of theft. A lock that forces thieves to be destructive makes your life a lot easier.
@Bosnianbill i live in the UK (never picked before) and im looking at starter sets do you still recommend the Dangerfield PRAXIS Dual-Gauge Complete Lock Pick Set as a good starter for Euro locks or is there something else you would recommend ??
it was. I forget what year, but newer ones are made in Mexico, you can tell them apart because don't say USA, and some of them have really poor quality cores.
Hey Bill - big fan of your videos, I have been watching for quite some time. I'm curious if you have ever given any through to trying to re-train the word "guys" out of your vocabulary when referring to your viewers collectively. While I don't think anyone believes you're intentionally leaving out people who don't identify as men, switching to more inclusive language would be all the more encouraging for aspiring and curious lock pickers of all genders. Like STEM and infosec at large, lock picking is a very male dominated hobby/craft, which is unfortunate since non-men have been some of the best pickers I have known. In fact, non-men on the whole represent folks who have better manual dexterity and critical thinking skills. Just a thought given your very large audience and didactic style. Thanks Bill!
Why can't you remove the core? It looks like a standard American lock under the plastic. I have a brinks padlock with a plastic cover, same deal, you can remove the weather cover and it's just a normal brinks lamented lock underneath. Same size and shape as master laminated padlocks, the plastic weather guard will fit them too. You just have to open the lock to remove or install the top part of the plastic weather guard.
you can drill out the rivet, bill has several vids on this, but the inside isnt a simple bolt to unscrew, so as a rivet, it proves bill didnt modify it. thats all that matters here.

So a bit of glue to secure the two halves of the protection together is a good investment.

I was just gonna say that, it was odd hearing him say they can't be repined when it just takes a couple seconds to drill out the rivet.

The company sells the retainers and screws, they can be easily rekeyed.
