Usually ghost stories give me the chills. Like...they make me feel uncomfortable, haunted, and scared. With Sarah Whitehead or the Black Nun...its something different. She or her story or sightings genuinely only make me feel sorry for her. I dont feel scared or uncomfortable, even when I imagine encountering her in that depressing haunted tube station. I just feel sorry for her and her fate and I kind of want to comfort her. That being said, you made an excellent video as always, Jago! It was really worth being out at stupid o'clock to get this footage. It matches the topic and theme perfectly.

i have been to Bank station several times but have only ever had a feeling of sorrow and hopelessness once in my life and it was when i had to go to Vange in Essex. never again.
I’ve worked at the Bank of 19 years. We have a number of ghosts and I have been told tales of happenings in the lower flowers. Even in the day time down there it can feel strange. In the evening it’s really quite early with bending narrow passageways etc...
Usual superb video - loved the night shots in the alleys around Bank. I remember seeing Blue Nun in the early 1980's. After a bottle of that, people would often also fall to the floor and start sobbing.
I spent over 10 years working next to Bank (End of Lombard Street near Mansion House), and found the underground part of the station a bit strange, then found out it used to be a crypt from which the remains had been moved (like many others for Inner London building), it always felt like a strange kind of station. It used to have lots of little shops in its bowels, but after a modernisation they seem to be missing, now it has the feeling of tunnels in a wasteland, and you just want to get out as soon as possible.
Some years ago I was lucky enough to be allowed access to the grave site of Nicholas Hawksmoor which now lies within a private garden. It is an imposing tomb over set by a thick stone cover. At some point in the past an attempt was made to lift this and as a result has a thick diagonal crack across it. Behind it is a stained glass window bearing the image of St Botolph the patron saint of Nottingham where Hawksmoor was born. I can find no images of this online and I wont be uploading my own out of respect for the current landowners privacy. My view on Hawksmoor the satanist is not repeatable in polite company. He was buried on consecrated ground in plain view of his patron saint. There is no decoration of any kind on his tomb. His architectural style was heavily influenced by Wren who in turn was inspired by the Romans and what was happening at the court of Louis XIV. This resulted in imposing buildings with small footprints relative to their other dimensions. In short the buildings of Hawksmoor have f*ck all to do with satanism but quite a lot to do with the imagination of Peter Ackroyd.
I've walked or cycled past that thousands of times on my commute, and never even thought it was a church. There used to be a Post Office adjoining it on the King William Street side. Regarding Bank being a depressing station, it certainly is if you have to use the deep lines like the Northern or DLR. The Central line is less of a chore, but before Covid it got horrendously busy. Furthermore, there are many long pedestrian routes, particularly form the Monument interchange to Bank. Nowadays you can do an out of station interchange and take a rather more pleasant over ground walk along King William Street. The new Bank entrance on Wallbrook in the Bloomberg building must get the award for the most useless pedestrian tunnel, it's very long. I'm sure it's quicker to go over ground and use one of the many entrances at Bank itself, particularly now that Bank junction is only open to limited traffic. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Fascinating. I can't remember how many times I've used Bank Station over the decades, but never knew it was built on consecrated ground. It can be confusing at first with so many exits, but it's worth remembering that there are well-maintained toilet facilities at the exit for the Royal Exchange, and never walk to Monument via Bank underground, it's quicker and more interesting above ground.
It is indeed far more pleasant above ground doing the Bank-Monument interchange, especially if you know the right entrances and exits. ISTR there was a travelator before the DLR opened. You used to be charged again if you went over ground, but now with out of station interchanges, there's no extra charge. Depending which way you're coming/going, Cannon Street can be quicker for District/Circle, just don't use the new Bank entrance on Walbrook, you might never see the light of day again!
Hi Jago, I found your videos a few weeks ago and I find them really interesting! Keep up the great work and thank you for giving us light in dark times.
Wow. The death penalty for fraud. Just imagine how many executions there would have been after the financial crash of 2007/8. Maybe the mile would have itself become a ghost town. Worse still, think of how many awful TV shows would have been made of Yevette Fielding and others screaming hysterically as they wandered around this area and all of the new hauntings in Canary Wharf.

A suitable piece for this time of year. Have you considered the London Stone, a rather sad relic in it’s current state, and I do not know anything about it at the moment.
Very cleverly narrated Mr H. You managed to make this spooky tale sound eerie , almost ethereal, without resorting to silly "wooooh ghostie" speech. A strange tale indeed but at least the poor soul managed to get some money from the bankers - quite an achievement. 😁👻
@3:07 Executed 29th of January,1912, And we think the appeals process is long today. And Mr Whitehead would have been well over 100 years old. British law not for the faint of heart.

Fascinating - no I really mean it - it's great to find all these tube associated stories that always make future visits more intriguing. That bit about knocking down a Hawksmoor church - it could so easily have happened. I met similar misfortune when suggesting our (dull, hardly used) village church should be knocked down and used as a carpark. Happy Halloween to you too!
A suitably cryptic tale for this hallowed ee'n. Wet deserted alleyways are so atmospheric and shimmering. On a ghost tour I learned how to film ghosts with a normal camera phone type device. Here’s how. It must have an LED flash that can be turned on as a backlight. The camera and light have to be integral to the same, i.e. each individual, device. It won’t work with separate units, although many people can film at once with their own devices with backlights. Well, there was about four, maybe 6 of us game to try and it worked. It was a very haunted place. Turn the camera on and turn the backlight on. Simply point the camera and film. Inevitably you will film orbs, just like you get on these Most Haunted tv progs. After you've filmed a few, you will begin to wonder what you got because they have a life of their own: flies, moisture and dust look and behave differently. If you do it outside or in mist, you'll get thousands of orbs which are actually water droplets, dust, etc., so be sure and do it indoors in a very haunted, or even slightly haunted place. Learn to know the difference in types of orb, motes of dust, flies etc. A lot of the orbs will behave oddly and make you wonder. The usual suspects are little or not so little fuzzy balls, usually of a couple of concentric circles. You will only see them on your screen in your light beam. You will not see them off screen in front of you in the same light beam; yet you still see them on screen at the same time. Sometimes they will behave very oddly. If they appear like they are being posted through a letter box, and gradually appear like a speeded up moon from nothing to full, then you probably have a portal, whose doorway can be in the middle of a room, or halfway through a piece of furniture. Of course you will have filmed quite innocent easily explained stuff. It's inevitable. Probably.
This may sound boastful but many years ago I attended a drinks' party at the Bank of England & at one point in the evening found myself out on the porticoed balcony shown at 1:52 and again later. I well remember the spectacular view from up there ! 😎👍👍

Great video for Halloween! I don't think I've heard anyone use the word 'eldritch' in a TH-cam video up until now.......and of course Bank station has a ghost.
Lovely episode. You gotta get yourself that electronic cellphone gimbal. Those shaky walking shots can become smooth cinematic movements with no additional effort. Which would have made your imagery much more compelling!!
These are the kind of stories I enjoy hearing. Keep up the hard work, and I hope you're considering doing videos on SCP stories because I would be there to listen.
This story comes straight out of Greek mythology. There was supposed to be a mermaid, who was the sister of Alexander The Great. She stopped random ships at sea, asking the crew if her brother was alive. If they answered "he's alive and well and rules the whole world," she'd let the ship go. If they told her the truth however, she'd sink the ship in a fit of grief.

You mentioned Ian Sinclair. He is friends with another you tuber. Roger John 'thelostbyway'. Fantastic peice of history and amazing video.
At the end, after you asked us, whether we have seen the Black Nun, I half expected the follow-up question, whether we have seen her brother.
I wish I’d thought of that!
Best ideas come too late ;)
spooky
more of stuff like that
there's gotta be loads of tales like that
