Each of our Top 10 Games will be announced at a home football game this season at Davis Wade Stadium.
#8 - 1981 Miami at Mississippi State: This was a homecoming victory for the Maroon and White in one of Emory Bellard's best years. Mississippi State was ranked #16 and Miami was ranked #13. The Bulldogs beat eventual Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly and legendary coach Howard Schellenberger. Following the win, MSU entered the Top 10, reaching as high as #7 that year.
Final Score: MSU 14, Miami 10
I was seated in the student section that day. I think it was that year's homecoming game. What a great game. With all due respect to the Hail State video staff and to MSU great Johnie Cooks, the score was MSU 14, Miami 10. The most memorable moment for me was a fourth quarter apparent go ahead Miami touchdown on a pass play to the north endzone was negated due to a motion penalty on the offense. Just about everybody in the stadium thought Miami had scored, and you can imagine the fans' reactions to the catch and also when the penalty was announced. The defense held on to preserve the Bulldog victory!
Johnnie Cooks is as good a defensive player as has ever played for State.
