    I had no idea it took that much time and energy. However the repetition is like meditation. Amazing!

    As an oji- cree man... we only prepared hide in the winter and smoked the hides early springs.

      You tend to come up with some brilliant ideas when an impending winter threatens to freeze your entire family and society to death

    Great vids and great channel brotha! Keep up the good work! I have a bunch of hides in the freezer, and have been meaning to share our methods of stone tools brain-tanning and egg-tanning with our viewers. Now seeing your video, I am inspired! Thanks again for the great content! As we always say, "Keep the old ways alive!"

    I met some natives in BC that layered the hides hair side down held down with rocks so that the leaches would drain all the blood from the hide.

      I was wondering what his solution is too. To get quite yellow smoke, you would use punky Spruce. For more of a beige, use punky poplar.

  • @kimcurtis9366

    I got these out of order and can't find WHAT you use fr the solution. Is it just water or is a brain solution?
    This should be shown to every woman so that they can see what the old ones went through to get those wonderfully soft, beautifully white shins for moccasins!
    White women, think they have it rough but, if they were to have to do this every day, until all the hides were done, they would really KNOW what work is! I'm not a racist so, if you want to bang away at me, go ahead. I'm a quarter Cherokee, adopted Lakota and raise White! I know what I'm talking about on both sides of the issue and I have done this myself with Elk and Deer hides!
    You are a marvel, Robert! Thanks for showing us all the steps!

    • @creativekoala9721
      @creativekoala9721 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ironically, I'm a white woman who does traditional brain tanning, because I don't know of any indigenous people who do it. The man who taught me was white, and I have yet to find anyone in our area who isn't too lazy to do it.

    I would love to see a video about your tools, how you made them and what each is used for!
    AND what grit did you use for sanding?
    AND during the second smoking, how long per side?
    AND is the third cycle the same as the second? (soak for 2 days, work for 2 days?)

      He never said .. But most hides are brain tanned, some people including Natives, will also add soap or even raw eggs. There's a real good video out on YT called something like Cree moose hide tanning ?? Which gives way more details.
