Is critical serious for the most part or is it still comedy based? I watched the first three episodes but it seemed pretty slow. The third episode did pick up the pace but I still can’t tell whether it’ll pick up
Futureidk 1 its a pretty good mix of both I think. A bit more serious than dimension 20, but theres plenty of good goofs and jokes. Which campaign did you start? Ive found it very hard to get interested in the first campaign but caught up to the second in less than two months
@Julia Orton Thanks Julia! I started with the second campaign. Also, I have watched so much Dnd content but CR seems like the most serious (edit: regarding rules and mechanics; also tone but not overly so) so I wasn’t sure if I’d need to be a more enfranchised player to deeply appreciate and enjoy it. I watched ep4 last night. The last two episodes were definitely better and the players seemed more comfortable in their characters so I bet it only gets better. I’ll stick with it!
But then he goes and pulls the Relentless Hex stunt and does the devastating Cone of Cold. Mercer really knew how to, well, roll with the low rolls, built a really compelling personality around it and then got the payoff when the dice turned in his favour at the end.
Leiland seems like the quiet kid who didn't get the therapy he needed and just snapped and these are just the friends he made in jail. still needs therapy though.
@@Ajehynot just that, but with his first action in that battle he pushed half of the enemy to nearly death's door and the other half got their hp halved which made them much easier for the rest of the party to pick off, so the contrast between him not being able to defeat a storm giant in a tiny body and the party finishing bigger enemies left and right got more stark by his own making
I AM THE KING OF THE VINGURI, I WILL SLAY THIS TINY, WRETCHED GARDENER ON MY OWN Leiland's "definitely not in control of the situation but trying so hard to be" moments are such a mood
I think Matt really stumbled onto a wonderful character, driven by dice rolls. His original concept was basically “The witch king with an obedience obsession and subtle themes of doubt” and he turned into an exploration of depression and continual failure. I think when Matt said he was planning on having Leiland leave the party after the airship battle, but was turned around by the party all encouraging him and being kind to him. It’s really obvious that Matt keyed into “Leiland wants to be loved for who he is and what he does.” And the dice/circumstance kept it from him until he started role playing “I’m going to do this and screw who’s watching.” At which point his rolls went VERY in his favour.
Matt using a reaction, a genuine combat resource, to have his character scream an unnecessary expletive is simultaneously perfectly in character, and a big freaking mood. And I am absolutely here for it.
that would be great, they already had Ally on one episode and most of their scenes had me howling with laughter (for anyone who's seen said episode, I know that was terrible joke but I couldn't help it).
@@YouThinkWho I know that isn't Ally, I'm saying they already had Ally in an episode of critical role and it was great so now I want to see Brennan guest star in an episode of critical role.
My expectation of Matt playing a PC was him using his vast 5E knowledge to play the game in his favour, stacking skills and the like as DMs are wont to do, but instead he was a damn joy to watch!
I've never met a dm who powergames You get enough of that behind the screen. If you want to beat up a group of lvl 1 adventurers with a cr 20, theres literally nothing stopping you
Ironically, it seems to be a curse that only afflicts him. Brennan rolls pretty well as a PC. I have this pet theory that Matt's dice curse is the residual effect from that one time Crit Role had Wil Wheaton touch his dice and DM screen, intentionally, so that the party would survive his combat encounter.
Im missing the very personal and motivating speech from leiland about how if a flippin frying-pan wielding halfling named galfast hamhead can escape the grasp of the generals of the bloodkeep, then everything is possible.
I love Leiland, and I feel an overwhelming urge to protect this poor, sweet boy. I just love the fact that this gay wraith happened to find himself on the dark side but just wants to be a fancy boy who is loved by a demon.
Great compilation, although it's missing Leiland's greatest moment, the "everything is possible" speech. But this only shows how good this character was.
Matt's luck, or lack thereof, was *something* else, let me tell you, but it was not the first time and he expertly managed to play around that :D The final session, for him, was great.
Shame on you for not including the moment when Leiland thinks he killed Galfast and then turn to Kasa ra ra the Beige only to realise she's been dead, the moment where someone tells him that he's just been depressed and when he finally does something cool the party notices.
Where can I watch the show chronologically? Like have recently discovered it and want to watch it, but the channel is a mess :) (sorry!) there is no ‘season 1’ playlist making it difficult for newcommers to get into
I don't know if you've found it by this point or not but on the Dimension 20 channel there is a playlist called Escape From the Bloodkeep that is the entirety of this show.
Hey, fun video. If you're recording on a PC you can avoid the lag spikes by loading the video in first and pressing the restart button and recording after
watching this made me go and discover Critical Role
this is by far the best comment ive gotten on any of my videos

me: oooh Matt as a player he’s gonna pull some wild obscure stunts this’ll be great
Matt: this is Leiland he can do nothing cool ever and i love him
Seems to match up with his usual vibe as a player, he goes for chaos.
“He can do nothing cool ever and I love him” the OC mood
No we love him
Markus loves him

lonely one From what I remember, this would be an accurate description of his background
Leiland flirting: “have u ever considered torturing ur entire family 🥺”

"Can I use my reaction?"
"Yes, you may use your reaction."
*"FUUUUUUUUUuUUuuuuUUUUU"*
I love that this is the last one because it's so much the fullest measure of his character.
Leiland is such a great example of embracing bad rolls to make your character
I think this is one if the most important things to do in dnd
Headcanon: Gilear and Leiland are related *somehow*

Fun fact: Brennan gave the Halfling the stats of a storm giant. :)
And thank goodness he did, because that pint-sized powerhouse _was_ Leiland's character arc.
This man walled a storm giant 101 for an entire fight. That’s a genuine achievement, and the fact that it looked so pathetic is just EPIC trolling.

The fact that she completely put his ass in the dirt with a frying pan is so fuckin funny

The funniest part was when Brennan revealed he had Storm Giant stats.
It’s funny because Matt previously played the Witch-King in Shadow of War.

Yeah, it's like the story itself decided he needed to do things for himself instead of for anyone else.
Matt got them story-teller dice. For sure

Don't forget his waste of another reaction to (and I quote) "actively go prone to sit where I am and pout"
Rekha’s face when Leiland is swearing loyalty to Leiland Jr is so gooood.
"Can you ever give something just 80%?" - the words of a loving mate who is used to her man being entirely too dramatic
Don’t forget: it had barely been two hours (out of game) when Leiland tried to commit honorable suicide
Leiland loosing it when his Lord tuns into a pile of ash is still so good
That mood dropped so heavily right there like “oh no. ohhhh no. someone help him.”
That little yelp lol

This whole adventure is just Leiland’s no good very bad day, but it does have a happy ending for him
This really was like a high fantasy 'Suicide Squad'
Matthew Mercer, even cursed with the DM’s Dice Curse, will make an amazing character and character arc out of it even with bad rolls.

Sometimes when Leiland speaks you can just feel a little Gilmore peek through. Like in the way he speaks and holds himself.

Matt plays Gilmore and Leiland similarly but the slight difference immediately projects the Gilmore is a top and Leiland is a bottom
