    Salman Rushdie is prescient. The tensions in the author’s latest novel are the same as many of those playing out on the front pages of newspapers today.
    Rushdie says that the conflict between progressive and repressive forms of religion lies at the core of "Two Years, Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights".
    “At the time that I wrote this book I’d never heard of Al Baghdadi or ISIS,” Rushdie told FRANCE 24. “In a strange way I invented this clash as a fictitious clash and then had the strange experience of watching it happen in real life…I’m really sorry that this book ended up coming true, but it did.”
    Ever the provocateur, Rushdie suggests in the book that it is time to outgrow religion the way children outgrow their need for their parents.
    “Yes, I think it’s time to stop living with our parents,” Rushdie told FRANCE 24. “There’s something a little unhealthy about grown-up people who go on living with their mother and father.”

    I totally agree with him about all religions. You don't need religion to have faith and connection.

      Indeed you don't even need faith to be a decent person. Faith is just believing without a reason. We don't need that.

    Salman Rushdie is a phenomenon of our beloved world today. He must be welcome to all of us human beings here on Earth. We want the Nobel Prize for Literature for him this year only. It's too much injustice with the brilliant author now

    I agree fully with the notion that religion in general poses a problem to humanity today, my motto, religion should be your own personal thing, be free to express it but LET IT NOT BE A PROBLEM FOR other people, let it not affect other people's lives.

    Salman Rushdie is so brilliant a speaker as he is an author ! He is one of the best fighting warriors for the entire human beings as well by dint of his revolutionary thoughts and ideas ! He must be awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature this year only. It's too late now. He will be 75 next week only.

    One should recognise that there is a problem, before tackling the problem. Most Muslims think that there is nothing wrong with their religion, and it doesn't need any reform. you responded well to the interviewer, he seems to think that the problem lays with one religion, but not other's.

    Yes the idea of women having to cover up is sexist and oppressive. However the concept of the burkini is more complicated than that. If you as yourself the question: "Do you think women who go to the beach in burkinis are asserting more or less independence than before it was invented? Is it more progressive to tell women to be wear swimsuits and show some skin because they obviously have no agency. Their men control them and it would be better if the state controlled them? It is possible for women to have sexist beliefs also and it is very much their right to hold these beliefs as long as they don't apply it to others by force.

    The history of mankind is littered with many different religions that came and went. In due course and as man continues to progress, Islam will also fade into history, joining the Gods of the Greeks, the Mayans, the Romans, the Egyptians and so on.

    I think the idea of equating religion with living with the parents is flawed. I have two elderly parents who can't take care of themselves anymore and I made a choice to live with them. Yes, old people can be very fixed in their thoughts but you can't allow them to dictate your thinking. Listen to what they say, process it and then decide if it's right.

    • @JabranImran
      @JabranImran 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most people get their religion from their parents and tie their religious identity to their parents. It’s a very common perception to not differentiate between the two, hence why people refer to religion as if it is an entity, because their religion is their parents.

    generalization is a language of ignorance, his whole Idea about the hijab and burkaa are a bit inconvenient, I understand where it comes from giving the Idea that he lived in a place of a male dominance , but no not all women wear them because a man told the to do so and It's an accusation that I refuse. No rules regrading how a person should look like externally should ever be applied. And the fact that some male intellectuals think that the know what women should or shouldn't do as a way of defending her rights is it self a joke.
