Actually because there a similar character, named Inspector Clouseau (live action, cartoon) from Pink Panther and the Inspector
The main character has a mustache in the very first episode, "Gadget in Winterland", but the rest of the episodes has no mustache.
Maybe the mustache was in a different layer, so it went way faster

Yup. That’s why the second one looks rushed. Notice the lack of details on the buildings and coloring and cutting one of the more complex sequences flying over the boat to replace it with Penny spinning against no background whatsoever.
The reason his moustache was removed after the first episode, was so they can avoid MGM studios suing them because he looked too similar to Inspector Clouseau.
Plus, would you leave custody of a girl to a man with that mustache?

Inspector Gadget with a mustache = Extremely serious, never falls for any tricks or traps, deeper voice, always gets his man with no help from Penny and Brain.
Inspector Gadget sans mustache = Goofy and clumsy Inspector we all know and love.
The mustache must house some of his brain cells!
Yeah but mustache Gadget also probably takes a pull from a bottle of Jack every morning, isn't afraid to shake and back hand a hysterical woman. But he's down to two packs of smokes a day now.

Everyone's talking about the mustache and here I am thinking about why in the beginning scene the buildings were better drawn in the pilot or why some of the scenes were exchanged with others.
or that the first penny scene was recycled instead of just reusing that ski scene
Well. Pilots are meant to deminstrate a studio whatbyour shpw is capable of. Most pilots have top notch animation, backgrounds, details, etc. Etc.
The buildings: Animation Cost
The prototype always has everything you would like it to have, but the final product requires you to cut some things out or simply then to make them more financially feasible. You gotta remember people had to draw then out and animate them by hand.
@@rubensalter6987 There is no reason they had to redraw everything to remove a mustache, this is cell animation, just remove the cells for the mustache.
Perhaps it is to keep the style of the opening similar to the actual show? It would look somewhat odd if only the opening had highly detailed buildings.
As for the opening in general, it doesn't explain the reason for the girl appearing. The regular opening shows the girl using a watch to interact with the dog to help the detective. The pilot shows the girl with a book that has to do with the vehicle and that is it. How does she relate to the detective?
This could easily have a great speedrunning community if everyone wasn't so focused on the American Dad intro

The real version is iconic
When the pilot episode, entitled "Winter Olympics," was re-aired as episode 65, "Gadget in Winterland," right before Chief Quimby gives Gadget his first assignment, a few lines were re-dubbed by Cree Summer and Frank Welker to address the purpose for Gadget's mustache. Also, in the latter version, the standard opening and closing credits were used.
In the pilot version, the lines are as follows.
Penny: "Uncle, are you sure that Chief Quimby doesn't know where you are?"
Gadget: "Of course, Penny. I'm taking one week's vacation, and I'm absolutely, completely, and totally off-duty."
In the later version, the lines have been re-dubbed as follows.
Penny: "You know, uncle, I really like your new mustache."
Gadget: "Thanks, Penny. It's so that nobody will recognize me. I'm on vacation -- absolutely, completely, and totally off-duty."
Somehow the mustache make him look more reliable.

Probably because in the pilot he WAS reliable. He was still bumbling but he was more competent than his usual portrayal.

Interesting note - it appears that the pilot used a green background for the title shot, while the series opted for a more brownish color, similar to that of some sort of brick.

They really screwed the pooch hard in 99 when they brought on Broderick for the Disney real life film. I remembered cringing through the whole thing frustrated that they would screw up this character so much. Not to mention the poor version of the gadget mobile.
They did okay on the theme, but this just felt so much more mature and professional.

The most memorable part for me was always the rotating shot with Penny and it somehow fit the part of the track
Everything was a transformer in the 80's.
I feel like the original has better timing in some places, and I love the entrance to Dr. Claw's lair. Too bad they changed it.
There's also the fact Dr. Claws castle hideout was actually destroyed at the end of the pilot episode, but was mysteriously back to normal in subsequent episodes, unless he had an identical-looking HQ somewhere else and/or it got rebuilt brick by brick.

They did. MGM told DiC that Gadget looked too similar to Inspector Clouseau and they needed to remove the mustache off Gadget to prevent any trouble.

I've always thought Gadget's face looked a bit too funny, but now it makes so much sense. I had no idea he originally had a mustache and looking at it, it looks so much better.
I'm used to seeing Gadget without a stache so seeing him sport one activates my flight or fight mode/joking
You know what's bugging me? I love both versions equally but seeing the ending reminded me that we still haven't seen what the original MAD culprit looked like even over two decades later.

Ironically, the studio that made Inspector Gadget also made the 3 Mario cartoons.
The best part about this is that someone had to spend the next few months doing nothing but erasing the mustaches from inspector gadget

I remember living in California and seeing the pilot before it was a series and telling people about the episode where he had a mustache, and for the longest time other kids thought I was making it up, and finally they showed the pilot as a regular episode.

The reason for why they removed the mustache was that the animators had a harder time making facial expressions when they had to draw around the mustache.
And also because MGM told them to remove the mustache since it looked too similar to Pink Panther's Inspector Clouseau.
Could've been both. The mustache could've already made it hard to draw expressions and then some one pointed out the similar look and they decided to remove it.
Captain Comics actually I think it had to do with an issue between DIC and MGM.
Honestly, in some cases I would think it would make it easier. More mustache means less mouth to animate.

This feels like a speedrun comparison
I... Feel like I enjoy the intros to these shows much more than the shows themselves. I find the music is where the memories are and I remember less than no storylines, and even if I did watch it, I'd probably get bored and that's such a shame, nothing like 90s cartoons

I didn't have the opportunity to see the series (because I was born in 2007) but it is clear that it was a true gem
Apart from the glaringly obvious difference of facial hair (as noted numerous times) and the various totally different scenes of Gadget pursuing MAD, there are many small differences: gold trim on the metal shutter door in the pilot and silver in the final, the floor and the trim in the room with the safe, and a green background for the title rather than orange.
Also in the pilot opening the animators forgot to put gloves on Gadget after he comes out of the wardrobe.
A traffic light can also be seen with the skyscrapers in the beginning of the pilot's intro.

Also, the sound effect of Gadget's suit inflating has been removed (0:39 and 0:46)

I've suspected that as well. Nick did a similar thing when they first acquired Inspector Gadget, coincidentally, around the same time the original Nicktoons premiered. Nick ran a few promos more or less stating (or at least hinting in a less-than-subtle way) that Gadget was the 4th Nicktoon and "their" property. I remember one spot in which they all but declared Inspector Gadget a Nicktoon. There was also a Capri Sun tie-in series of Nicktoons trading cards the channel released featuring all 3 of the then Nicktoons Doug, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats, the live-action children's show Eureeka's Castle...and Gadget.
Fun fact: Inspector Gadget was originally going to be a Lupin the IIIrd spin off.

I always wondered why that one episode was so different. IIRC he's actually relatively competent in that episode. Kinda wish they had stuck with that version of him.
In my own opinion, I don't think that Gadget is as dumb as it appears. I think that what gives that appearance is that Gadget tends to be a bit myopic. He gets so focused on one aspect of a case that he doesn't notice other important information.
This was a factor in the movie "A Shot in the Dark". Clouseau is so convinced of the innocence of the main suspect in the crime that he doesn't notice much of what is going on around him, including the deaths of some people.

I love how the timing on the animation is off just enough (with sometimes the pilot pulling ahead and sometimes the series intro pulling ahead) between the two that the x-ray explosion of the chief in the safe happens in one, then the other.

Inspector Gadget was still on Nickelodeon in the early 90's; however, it also aired as filler on CBS's Saturday morning/early afternoon block right after Where's Waldo? during the 1991-1992 season, so that could have been why Burger King chose to feature it in its kid's meals.
