I laughed hysterically at "so I listen to a murder podcast..." as a fellow murder podcast listener I too can say it drove me nuts how the cops just randomly seemed up to date on how to sweep a crime scene!

I love the way you ladies described this book! You gave a great plot idea without giving important things away. I didnt like the book either at first. Started out boring to me. But it picked up about 100 pages in and I couldn't put it down. Such a good book!

The sheriffs didn’t know about murder. They walked around like “cock if the walk” know it alls. And it turns out they were totally wrong. They never thought to ask Jumpin’ any questions because he was just the local “friendly black man” who’s nice to everyone but must not know that much. So to me, the racism was an important part of the story.
And I do think she could learn that much because he brought her textbooks and she had nothing to do but enjoy them. (And the author is a scientist.)
For me, I liked a lot of things… but the courtroom scenes were the most poorly written parts of the story.

I just finished this today and I felt the same as both of you. I thought I was going to like it because I've heard good things about it, and then when I started it I was like, "I don't think I'm going to like this," but then I did end up liking it and giving it a 4 stars as well. One of the reasons I thought I wasn't going to like this when I started was because of the writing style. It was way more descriptive than I would have like, and I know some people like a lot of descriptions, but for me I get bored with too much descriptions. I really got into it once the murder trial started happening. But also there were little things that annoyed me as well that I was like "wait a min. this doesn't make any sense." SPOILER ALERT for anyone reading the comments. I'll put what I mean down below.
    SPOILER!!!
So when Tate found Chase's necklace at her place in the end, I was like "wtf?" If they arrested her for murder and they're trying to build a case against her, why the hell didn't anyone search her place for evidence? Especially knowing Chase's necklace was missing and his mom said Kya was the one that gave it to him. You have a sheriff who's an expert at footprints tracking but no one bothers to search her place? Unless I miss that part, I did listen to half of this on audio so maybe I missed something, but I honestly don't remember them searching her place. It just didn't make sense to me.

Right!!! Lol! It was basically as a shack. See another thing that didn’t make sense lol. But still a good story.

@@intheeyeofthebeholder Oh ok, that makes sense. I figured I probably missed something, cause that was just a huge plot hole.

I just finished this and I recall specifically the sheriff saying now we ain’t gotta tear up her place to do this but let’s careful and not leave any evidence behind.
So what I figured, is they just didn’t look in the right place at the time because they were overwhelmed with the literal horde of collecting she had in a small space. And I don’t think popping up floors would be that common.

      including myself in the conversation
hi, i just finished the book yesterday (2 days took me) and i like it! made cry or tear a little in some moments.
there were some things that didn't make sense... i can live with the fact the shell was hiden in the bricks sort of but waiiit.... Tate gave her the cap like 1 or 2 weeks before Chase's dead.... sooo, may be the author, Delia, decide to leave as a clue for us to decides what to think but.... Tate could would and must have come to his mind that Kya had the cap, so why Chase had those fibers? obviously Kya was in a moment in some way with Chase.... so.... he must have know or at least have many doubts about her innocence since the cap was brought as evidence.
anyways, Tate really loved her till and after her death.
I wouldn't say she committed murder in 1st degree, because i don't know about laws or US laws in that year, but also i wouldn't say she act in self defense.... she must have call him to see him that night in the tower,... we don't know if he tried to abuse her again, probably¿? or she just deliberate decided to kill him or give him an ultimatum¿? never thought he would die
she had clear something after Chase's assault, Kya would never let anyone treat her like that as Ma went through the same.
nice twist (although i knew she was since the cap and bus hours did not match)

Sounds like it turned out to be a good book, not sure I would have made it after the lackluster beginning. I think it's important to grab the reader in the beginning, so they can finish the book!

The book sounds like a slow starter so not sure about it but I am so sure about continuing to watch you review books. Loved coming across your chanel. Really enjoyed your review but the hook for me is the whole interraction and boundary setting with your dog. So real and heartfelt and so cute that mostly , Charlie just kept coming back to the picture. Thank you also for your representation. There are many non black rbook eviewers who I really enjoy and are my go to, but also because there have not been so many black reviewers. Having a variety of reviewers is so much more pleasant. Thank you again. I hope you have kept going

Language acquisition that happens in short periods of time occurs roughly between ages 1-6 and Kya was like 8 I believe. I can understand why that bothers you but it's not that far off

I tried this on audible and couldn’t get past the second chapter. I was so bored! My mind could not focus on the story. I ended up having to just read it so I could focus. It took 30 pages before I was invested in the story. It was pretty slow at the beginning but worth pushing through. I loved it in the end.

I'm a white woman but I definitely felt like there was some racist micro-aggressions in the story and it was disappointing to read. I brought this up while referencing examples in my bookclub and was immediately berated for considering it to be racist and completely shot down. They were so adamant it wasn't racist just cause they said so. It's all white people in the group and they can't see passed their privilege or think critically. (This author is also wanted for questioning by the Zambian government in relation to a murder that happened in her presence in Zambia. It looks like her step son shot a poacher. They have since fleed Zambia to go back to the USA. I think its so fucked up.)

Loved your ladies review. I was unsure how I was gonna like this book at.first. But it ended up resonating deeply with me. I was raised in the deep south in TN and felt the pain of her abandonment. I currently live in SC so the landscape fit everything here to a T. I felt you at the education part 🤣 but the book kept movin.
