JR has said he is not paying Sagan anywhere near 5 million. He said it was more like half that.
In saying that, I actually do think he is worth every penny. Let’s look at the big picture here: what has he done for the sport of cycling and sponsors alike?
His charisma transcends this sport, it’s as simple as that. It really wouldn’t matter what sport he chose to do, he would still be hugely popular. So in my opinion, cycling is extremely lucky to have him!

I think a large proportion of that is coming from Specialized, Total energies contribution may well be ~ $2.75 million. Even that is still a tremendous about of money. As I said in the video his profile may justify such a price. It’s just not the primary goal of total energies, they need UCI points or risk loosing out on world tour entires along with the exposure and opportunities it yields.

Sagan is the king. He’s setting the bar for others to make more. If Wout and are others are worth it then they will benefit from Sagan earning what he earns now.
Sagan’s name value brings in big money to his sponsors now and will continue to do so.
His age is a factor but Bora was a much stronger team than Total and if he was to go to a stronger team then he could rack up some wins.

Not right now. But he is still marketable. Specialized still makes a collection for him. Signature glasses, etc…

Sagan is very marketable, he has made Specialized one of the most desirable bikes on the market.
I don’t think he has the same adulation as he had just a few years ago, garnered by scooping up wins all over the world!

@@poursuivant5167 his results aren’t there for sure. I mean he did win the points jersey at the Giro last year but I think that’s his last win/major success? Other than that, advertising and marketing is there. I don’t see that going anywhere anytime soon.

I read somewhere that Wout and Primoz are paid 1.2 million a year, so no Sagan is not worth 5.5 million!

He’s a very influential individual with a big following, but with his win drought his salary seems highly overinflated, particularly in comparison to the likes Rog and Wout as you say.

During the time when Peter was where Wout is right now (around 40 pro victories) he hasn't been paid that well as he is right now. His salary means what he means to cycling and what he did for cycling until today. A legend.
