    For people who are frustrated about not being able to understand what they're saying: congratulations, you just experienced for a few moments what deaf people deal with all day every day. Not trying to be snarky, but maybe it helps you recognize why accommodations for deaf and hard of hearing people are important.

    What I find so amazing is how well William Petersen signs despite that he learned only what he needed to know for the episode.

    I have had a major Vision impairment my entire life, and I still remember when I first saw this episode all those years ago. People with disabilities feel very isolated from the rest of society, particularly vision and hearing loss. For someone who is non-disabled to connect which one of us is truly a gift but only the disabled person really understands. People really are afraid of what they don't understand, and the tendency is to avoid it or treat it with total indifference. Perhaps this seems harmless, but your indifference Hertz. I know it's television, and we can live out our fantasies through this medium. But it was still a touching moment for me.

    I'm 19 and I'm working at being self-taught. Something I found that helps is signing while doing average stuff, even when it's with those who hear. It's kind of fun.
    It is a little scary, but people like it when you are learning their language, whether it's ASL or Spanish. You're trying and that's what matters. Just try not to sign too fast. I've discovered I have a bit of a "stutter" when I sign. :]

    That sign language he had been practiced to be in acting. He signs more between ASL and SEE sign a little. He was not too rusty but little choppy in every sentence. He was not fluent as what his mother taught him when he was little. He may forgot lots when he was not around with his mother. Wasn't he? That is part of acting not real life.

    I love Gil Grissom as a character and this scene always stuck with me. When I saw this episode, back when it first aired, I became fascinated with sign language. Fast forward to today, and I'm finally teaching myself ASL so I can (hopefully) communicate with my non-verbal daughter. I'm glad TH-cam exists because it is making learning so much easier.

      Loved Grissom too. I'm learning to sign. Not fluent but can carry on a conversation OK. Only thing I didn't like about this episode is the woman he's signing with here was a bit presumptuous and rude to the team while they weren't acting like that towards her.
      Let's both keep learning to sign(interpreting songs 🎵 helps me w/concepts)

    i find this an epic scene between a deaf and a hearing person...i feel this way when i speak to a deaf person...its not really the communication that is the problem, it is just being able to understand they're world...that is all

      I’m an interpreter. The only thing that was odd to me is that NO ONE who has Phyllis Frieliech for a mother (she played his mom later) would sign as stilted as Gil does. It would be his first language. His ASL doesn’t suck, but it’s not native.

    Learning the vocab is relatively easy (then again I'm told being 18 helps that). The hardest part is having the confidence to put yourself out there and try

      @@atearsarahjane Well, you're 26 now, do you have any interest in getting back into it? I tried to start learning at one point, and have basically forgotten everything. If it's possible, and I have to say that I am technologically limited (no smart phone), would you be willing to re-learn with me? I don't know how without smartphones, but I'm just curious.

She reads lips mostly, but I still want to be able to communicate fully with her, especially now with the pandemic and everyone wearing masks, she’s really struggling. Can anyone tell me what they are saying? I’m catching the odd word but ASL is slightly different so I’m kinda lost

    Ignore catworld4's comment. He is not signing SEE. Its a mix of both, ASL and ESL. SEE is a whole different world that no one use today.

    • @mchobbit2951
      @mchobbit2951 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not true that no one uses SEE. SEE is still recommended to parents of deaf children who are raised primarily oral.

    • @KoriEmerson
      @KoriEmerson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He uses a mix of older signs ( the way he signs what is OLD) and uses English word order with a mix of some proper ASL. It’s exactly how someone who was his age would sign if they had learned when they were little.
