Introducing dogs and cats

  • Although dogs and cats are often portrayed as enemies, if introduced carefully, they can actually get on extremely well. If either pet or both have lived with the other in a previous home, then the introduction process is likely to be easier. However it is still a good idea to take things slowly by following the advice in this leaflet - a gentle introduction is far safer than a rushed one, and will hopefully result in both pets becoming good friends.

THIS is the kind of video that's actually helpful, concise, straight to the point and with clear instructions. Since TH-cam hid the dislike button it's hard to find tutorials that are this good. Thanks a lot!

Well, finally someone who knows every important aspect. Especially the walk of the dog before meeting the cat. Nothing worse than a dog with pent-up energy and being excited.
But I also have more tips for the cat-part. If the dog is under good control, the cat should get treats & praise & cuddles too if it behaves calmly, also the cat should be played with the dog being in sight.
A good training would be also giving both their meal, while they still can see each other from far away and moving the bowls closer every time (in the end with f.e. 2m gap)....of course only if both are not food aggressive. (but that should be trained anyway)

Thank you for this. My brother passed a few days ago and I've inherited his kitty. The poor kitty is traumatized as is but I have 4 dogs to meet the kitty. So far I've done it right, separate rooms, gates, dogs crated overnight with kitty free to roam... Newest dog is my biggest concern as he is a pittie/cane corso rescue puppy and VERY bouncy. Advice to tire him out first is very helpful. Again, thank you for this video

I've always had cats and introduced a puppy. Tonight I pick up two kittens and I admit to being a bit worried about my 2 year old pug cross' reaction. I lost my 18 year old cat a couple of months ago, so he is used to cats but not kittens. The video was very helpful x

Thanks for the video. We have two cats who have been with us for about 3 years as the only pet in the house and will be introducing a dog soon, who seems somewhat excitable and energetic so we know it may be a process to get them acclimated with each other. This will help a lot.

Did it help with your cats? We are also in a very similar situation as I have a clear bond with my cats but I don't want to get a dog that will ruin that. We share these two cats between two houses as they do not get on. so I am very worried about bringing a 15 month labrador cross into my home. I'm not so keen on a stair gate so is there any other way to get around this? and do you have any advice for someone in my situation? Thanks.

I have a very hyper and excitable Labrador and I would love to own a cat. When my dog would see strays *running* he would often pull until my arms fell out. But he has been around a particular cat who does not like dogs his size. She will hiss, try to bat at him, and things like that. But all my dog wanted to do was meet and greet! I would actually have them in contact with eachother and actually got them both very calm. At one point, the cat was very relaxed to where she closed her eyes. My dig was calm while he was laying down, smelling and chewing a stick. I would also like to mention that that cat has never interacted with large dogs and is an outdoor cat. PS, I do not own the cat and is at a different location.

Thanks. This is helpful, just got a kitten and already have a 3 year old staffie cross. He doesn't get on well with other dogs who bark at him. As soon as he saw the kitten he wanted to investigate fairly calmly but the kitten hissed and growled and my dog went on a crazy barking spree and is now crying and super hyper. They are in separate rooms now and probably will be for at least a week. I will try again with slow introduction in a few days after long dog walk to see how they get on. Fingers crossed.

This video has really helped put my mind at rest.
Tomorrow we are getting a Maltese puppy. We have a 7 year old cat, who has never lived with dogs before.
I understand that it is tough, but doable. I will follow all of this, I will keep them separate, routinely do scent swapping and then eventually do supervised interactions. I know they will get on in time! I don't expect it to be instant. Thanks so much for this 🥰

    • @lucyobrien1617
      @lucyobrien1617 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Fisva They get on okay. It's still early days though and I am aware that it can take a good few months before they are both relaxed properly around eachother. For now the cat tolerates the puppy, Alby. He will swipe Alby if he gets too keen, but he's very good. He never uses his claws when he swipes him. The puppy does get the message to which is good and will back off.
We still keep them apart overnight. We are working on them sleeping in the same room in time but we are not rushing nor forcing anything. I will do another update in a couple of months or so

So I've done some of these but not all. We have a a 14 week puppy who we got three weeks ago and a 13 year old cat. My can has exclusive roam of the upstairs and can choose to go anywhere while the puppy is contained to the main floor. The cat will come down with the dog periodically (he is becoming more confident) but my puppy invariably chases him. Will the training on the lead still work even if the puppy is in the habit of chasing? I don't need them to be friends, I just need them to get to a point where they can coexist peacefully.
I am thinking of keeping them separated for the next week, then introducing them again as if it's the first time, but doing it properly. Any thoughts? Would really appreciate any advice.

will this hissing die down? i dont expect them to get along right away, but i want to get to a point where they can be in the same room together. it's been hard taking care of both of them at the moment by myself.

leave them alone for a while while watching (with a nanny cam or something) to see if they get along. Stay in the next room in case of emergency. Leave them together for a couple of minutes. If they're together long enough (with or without you there) they'll get used to each other. The tips in the video will work, too, since she the expert, not me

In my case, I was kinda forced to adopt a cat and a dog in 2 days. well Kitty came along and adopted us to be honest. Today we took adopted a dog with like 4 months of age who was dumped by bad people near we live. The dog is 3x the size of the cat, but still very shy. While the dog was super friendly Kitty was not amused went straight up to the dog to scare him away. Could this be some sort of territorial thing or is she just jealous? It really sounded like, this is my family now, hit the road Mr Dog. How can I fix that?

I want a cat because I get sad every so often, and my dog (who I love SO much and she adores me as well) doesn't like coming upstairs to my room because she thinks she's getting a bath. (which she hates) I want a cat to cuddle with when I'm sad and to just have a companion in my room when I don't want people interaction (I'm an introvert) But my mom doesn't like cats, and I don't think they believe that our dog could get alone with a cat or kitten. I really want to ask them but I'm scared to. Does anyone have any advice?

AmazingFaithLPS Hey I would try and reintroduce the upstairs to your dog as a good thing. Coax her upstairs with goodies that she loves, and gently guide with the leash. She will resist, so hold firm the leash. Don't pull, just hold firm. When she takes a step towards you, reward her with a treat and praise. keep going until you reach your room, and then lavish her with goodies and praise. Make it a fun place to be. Invite her on the bed, she'll probably love being up there with you. And keep the bathroom door closed. If you want a cat, then you should get one, but I think having your dog up there with you will be more rewarding. I hope it works out!

Hello I have a dog that I am fostering that we really want to adopt but he is not okay with cats and has tried to bite my cats, I have got to the point where we can be in the same room but if my cats come to him (they are overly friendly) the dog will bite and I am scared he will attach and hurt or kill them. I heard you say seek professional help but I am not sure who to go to for this and we really want to make this work life long for the sake of the dog were fostering and the safety of my cats. My biggest fear at this point is that my over friendly cat will walk up to the dog and try to great him/rub againsthim and get hurt. I have him on a leach but I cant stop my cats from going near him they have no fear.
