I can second that brother, Im 41 going through the same thing. I think alot of older guys are getting back into skating, specifically bowl skating. Im learning right now myself. This coronavirus has alot of ppl down and I think skating is saving alot of ppl's lives right now. Saving them from depression. Giving them a new lease on life. Its awesome.

bro, when you said "skate or die" at the end, it made me laugh so hard. I'm 47 and learning bowls, and I used to say that all the time back in 89-91'...haha, good times.

Say I really liked your video.
I find it inspiring that your not only doing it, "Skating" but also sharing the experience freely.
I tore my shoulder up 2 yrs ago BMX at that exact park. That injury, turning 50, being over weight set my confidence back tremendously.
I "LOVE!" skateboarding. Throughout life It helped me get out of my head. And express my self creatively. And in the mid to late 80s I was good at it. I've layed it down and picked it up many many times. Ive exposed and coached 2 generations of nephews and 3rd gen. my 16 yr old son. To skateboarding. I've had my son on a board since he could stand. But I'v struggled to keep up my momentum. My passion for "it" still burns in my heart. And you've inspired me to come back out of my head.
I tried to start carving that bowl and just got frustrated as hell but recently relized my board was not set up for it. So I've made some adjustments (new set up😉) And I'm planning to get to work.
My son and I frequent that park. I look forward to running into you ther somtime, So I can shake your hand. You just convinced me that I'm moving in the right direction.
    Good Stuff Man!

Never having been that good of skater in the late 80s, early 90s to begin with it was nothing for me to hop back on a bike and not skate. Today tho i feel there was always something id missed out on! Thank you brother!🙏🤙. I also found you on the ig too! Ill be going back into the skate shop here shortly to dial in a board that feels good again real soon! Stay safe out there!

I’m 54 and just getting back into ramp and bowl after decades away from it. I’ve always just cruised on a skateboard every now and then but after just quitting dirt bikes and road motorcycles I have decided to get back into surfing and skating… everyone thinks I’m nuts haha but I don’t care, gotta stay young and the feeling of being back on surf and skate boards is awesome! I actually just bought a Smoothstar surf skate as well and I’m loving it and I will be using that in the bowl because it carves so much better. They aren’t cheap but I highly recommend it so far. To all the old guys out there , I salute you… also wish you many more years of skating and being injury free and to the Prodigal Sun, thanks for making this content man, the more stoke and support the better. Hey, nice vid. Inspiring. I’m 63! …and I’ve been skating since I was 10, surfing since I was 13. But almost all my skating has been carving on long hills (I never go straight).
But I want my skating to improve my surfing, so I am going to start getting in the bowls. However, I have a really stupid problem, I skate goofy and surf regular foot, blame that on my friends who made me learn to surf regular because I’m right footed. So I am learning to skate regular footed after 50 years of skating goofy. It’s really hard!!!! I swear it is like starting from scratch. But I’m getting there in a slanted parking lot and getting ready to hit the skate park early in the morning…with lots of padding 😂. Wish me luck!!

Wow man. You make me feel so much better. I’m 36 and I just picked up skating by chance because my daughter wanted a skateboard and I figured it would be a good chance to bond. Man, let me tell you I love it and can’t get enough. It helps relieve my PTSD symptoms like no other. Like a drug! I feel stupid and self conscious a lot about being an old noob. That plus my social anxiety has kept me out of parks until recently. I started going at 7 am when no one is there. Funny how you can do combat tours in the Infantry, but are scared to skate in front of other people and especially other skaters. I want to skate bowls so bad. I had a little taste my first time the other day at the park. I’ve only been skating a few weeks. But I’m taking it slow. Working on my manuals and balance now. Appreciate the advice dude. I wish I had some land to build my house I would build this in the back of my house this is such a great skateboard park and great setup it is so smooth and so awesome I would Escape all day and all night if I had this skateboard park in the back of my house everyday I'd be getting up early in the morning and just skate my heart out all day long learning new tricks and everything if I could create something like that in my backyard if I have bought some land and built my house this would definitely be in the back of my house so I can skate 24/7 man this is a nice skateboard park I think it's probably one of the nicest ones I've seen so far

Tried "dropping" in on tranny last night almost made it first try but wiped...couldn't let that horse scare me so I gave it second try and ate a crap ton of pavement...board shot cuz I was weighted too far back and didn't punch the front down hard enough....back is shot...may have slipped disc will be able to tell in he coming days ( won't be first time) Anyway I conquered the fear with the encouragement of some friends and the young guns at the park straight up said "welcome to the club" ..hoping to be able to go back there as soon as I am healed and just work on back and forth carving in the bowl If I can generate enough energy to get up to the lip then I think I will be ready to attempt the drop in again. Definitely learning experience you have to wieght in the direction you are heading which I think will take some getting used to. Thanks again for the page!!

35 years old went to a bowl early this morning with my girl. I chickened out and stuck to the bottom of the pits the whole time . felt shocked by the amount of speed I picked up from just letting gravity roll me down the slope and lept off the board. I tried skating off and on when I was in my mid-teens , got frustrated cuz I couldn't ollie and gave up completely around early 20s. started getting back into it this past summer with my girl and pulled off an ollie on my first try after a decade plus of inactivity. so ur totally right about having better developed senses . I still can't ollie at will or while rolling but im practicing about an hour a week . thanks for posting this video. you explain things very well. I'm gonna have to watch it 20 times to let it sink in. but ya dude thanks for the inspiration and motivation. keep shredding !

This is rad! I just picked skating back up three years ago. I’m 30 now and I just started skating transition a couple months ago. I live in Burlington VT so we have a really nice bowl and mini ramp at Burton that I go to every day. I’ve been amazed at the progress I’ve made in transition skating as opposed to how much I was struggling trying to do street stuff. I just committed and built a 9 inch transition set up with rails and forged hollow 159 indies. It’s the best feeling set up I’ve ever had. Working on frontside slashes now. And hope to get 50-50s and rock to fakies and rock and rolls down soon.

Looks as though you had no trouble here.
Look at the lines in and out and see if you copy that today if it's possibly different.
You made it look seamless then.

I started skating again just a couple days ago and bought a new board just to carve the bowl. That's all I really want to do. Trying to drop in that first time again was kind of scary, but I did it. Then I started experimenting with carving techniques. There's also been this cool guy there who's been cheering me on, he's really good on the bowl and very supportive. Anyways, one of my challenges now is frontside carving, but it's getting better. Another challenge is safety because I have this mental limit where I won't push myself to do certain things because I feel so vulnerable, so I think that I need to where pads. My last challenge is feeling self-conscious with all these super good skaters all around me. I just want to skate to feel free and happy and carve the bowl like I'm surfing, but I feel this pressure and judgment all around me like "I don't belong there." It's probably all in my head, but I wish some of these skaters would understand that people like me just want to have fun. Music is my real talent and I can't risk getting vital body parts injured. Anyways, great video!

I just bought skateboard because I fell in love with snowboarding. and I'm trying to keep my balance in Summer lol. skateboard it's more complex.. after 3 months of snowboarding I'm be abble to do some tricks, jumps, ollies, run on blue's, some carvings.. after almost 1 month of skateboarding I got a nice scratch on my elbow 🤣😂 and I'm skating looking like a baby.

Took my son to the skatepark yesterday. Got him on top of a small pyramid with a flat deck on top. He was scared to ride down it, he’s 7 with only three weeks skating under his belt (I was intimidated by it too lol) so I had him sit on his board and ride down it a few times. Long story short, 10min later he rides down it standing first try after I did it! Was I scared? Hell yeah I was lol but I want to share the amazing world of skateboarding with him and we’re learning together. I wouldn’t trade one second of the time I spend with him on our boards for anything. Keep up the great vids bro! You keep me motivated.

Yesterday’s park riding on the bowly parts really got me stoked to find a bowl soon. But I still need to get that drop in. I’ve tried it five times now on a 3’ or 4’ quarterpipe (unsure about height). I’ve manual skidded three times and slipped out completely and crashed hard twice.
Love the old dude skating. Shows me I have plenty more years to do this newfound joyous thing. Maybe I’ll even get good at it eventually.

Yeah that’s the problem. I think I have all the time in the world to slam them and it feels fine going down but then just as I am about to hit the bottom I skidd or slip out. I’ll get it eventually. Just need to let the shoulder heal a wee bit more before the next try.

47 year old, here, too. I learned transition skating on inline skates about ten years, ago, kick scooter about a year, ago, and skateboard I started to dabble a year ago and am going to pursue it more.
    1. With skateboard the ability of the board to turn is crucial, especially for beginners. Not all trucks are turny, and that's a problem. Had Tensor Mag Lights, they were not turny and sucked at transition skating. Indy's are very turny and much easier to learn on. Wheelbite is always an issue: many different ways to deal with it, but simplest is to have turny trucks and use small wheels.
    2. Agree with you that transition skating is way safer than other stuff. Surfaces are smooth, wear your gear and be comfortable sliding out on it. I wear a full-face mx style helmet, I've learned from experience that smacking the face can happen and half-helmets are useless in that regard.
    3. Agree with you that being older is a benefit. The brain is calmer and more ordered. I learn and understand stuff and enjoy it way more now than I ever did when I was younger.
    4. Put in your time. Some people are intuitive at transition pumping, for me it has taken thousands of repeated pushes to understand some of the magic of pumping. I laugh at kids who spend 80% of their time at the park on their phone or jawing with their friends, I'm pushing it 90% of the time, because the better you get the more enjoyable it is.
    5. Yoga/stretching. As an older person I've learned agility and fluidity and balance are closely tied to flexibility. Being consistent with stretching and maintaining flexibility has taught me body awareness and where I'm lacking/stuck and what problems I have in my body. Especially when you wipe out the extra flexibility helps. The flexibility also helps with recovery. Don't get old and stiff!

Good info! What helped me get my head around bowls coming after years of riding ramps was visualise every corner has been turned 90 degrees onto It's side, then just throw your weight forward in every corner. Worked wonders for my speed!
