  • Find out what the AKC Derby is all about! Considered a minor stake of Field Trials, we'll cover basic rules and discuss the natural and trained abilities the young dog is judged on. Derby's are a great way for new handlers to enter the field trial sport, and this is a must see video before you do! Watch all of our videos on The Retriever Nation.

Excellent! The last mark at 10:15 as especially difficult as the dog had to swim across 3 water bodies (each time due to the tall shoreline vegetation, loosing sight of the gunner station at the mark), through old bird scent (due to previous dogs coming back with the bird), and finally drive up the hill at an angle to the mark. This team did an excellent job! Competing against pro trainers, 2nd place well deserved!
In field trials, the handler must be silent when the marks are being thrown. Typically handler typically steps back slightly and silently to cue the retriever to focus on the next throw. In order to do this and watch the dog at the same time, the handler needs to know the timing or cadence of when the judge signals for the mark. One way to learn this timing is to watch the previous dogs and mentally count to learn the judges cadence. Some judges will be very quick (1-2 then signal for the throw) and others longer timing (1-2-3-4 then signal for the throw) but judges are typically very consistent with their cadence to be fair to all teams. Typically the handler watches the dog, not the throw because the throws will be consistent and by watching the dog, the handler will know whether the dog saw and focused on each mark and whether the dog's line manners were good.

Great comments Missy! You were definitely paying attention! It was a tough field of competitors, 8 dogs from this derby went on to the Derby Championship! Also, YES to watching your dog when the marks are being thrown! Except of course for the flyer! Take a quick peak to see where that one goes! 😉 Thanks for the great comments! 👍

Thanks for explaining what a derby is. Even as an amateur trainer who runs HRC Tests, I didn't fully understand a derby dog till this video.

Yes, there are so many different venues to run each with unique aspects. HRC is very fun and rewarding, too! Thank you for watching!
