  • I made this video as a result of a conversation I had with my mother, J Q Treloar, a fellow painter. We were talking about how your temperament shapes your working practice. Two different approaches. She said to me, "Are you a Dabber or a Slabber?".
This video introduces my new film maker, Sol Warwick.
You may like to join me at the St Ives School of Painting where I will be teaching online:

how lovely it would have been to have Alice as an art teacher. Passion, clarity, knowledge and a unique way of teaching. Walking the tightrope. Risk taking, doing it in one hit, the frisson and intensity of dangerous art. Wonderful. Will see St Ives artists quite differently now.

I enjoyed every video you made and learned from them, please keep making more. Very few artists like you who share knowledge and inspire me on TH-cam. Truly appreciated!

this has been a revelation - thank you Alice. I worried that I should be only in one camp ... and the Matisse example just completed freed me up. With gratitude, Helen

now I understand why my works want to be finished in one go. Indeed I am a slabber. And it is not a wrong thing to be, it has many qualities, as you showed. My medium is the Japanese brush (sumi-e) so this description is so fitting. However, I never connected careful (slab)composition with temperamentful execution! Thank you and your mother for this new avenue of thoughts and yet another level to enjoy art on, both as a viewer and as a createur.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I was particularly pleased with your analysis of Bonnard and Vuillard, two of my favorite artists. I was happily pleased for your comments re Winifred Nicholson. I agree she has been vastly underrated. Of course, her husband, Ben Nicholson was not; however, I think they were mutually influenced by each other in their early work. An art teacher long ago introduced me to Ben’s work and I really liked his work but he is not really known in the USA. your videos take me back to when I was in art school (eons ago) and your discussions are the best! I also admire your work and appreciate the demand of time they have on you. I was hope you find the time, however, to make more videos. Thank you.

Matisse will have done years of drawing to have the facility to be able to make his fluid line drawings. He may well have had several attempts. Not just the hand eye coordination, spatial awareness and visual perception would be highly developed.
