Your videos and general attitude are better than most of the content on this decimated site. I hope you keep up the splendid work.

I don't quite understand why big budget games often strife to be so similar instead of finding their niche.
Because in theory that should mean their audiences are divided across their competitors. Most people can't or won't afford every game.
And even if there are less big budget games nowadays than in the past, there are still a lot of games coming out competing for our attention.
One would think that finding a niche and perfecting it to gain a permanent audience is more profitable in the longterm. But then again, I am *not an industry.*

Excellent video. You make some very salient points. I imagine the problem centers around money as well as the progression of technology and the dying breed of experienced professionals. We are in an age of participation award winners.

We got 3 incredible Mass Effect games in a 5 years span. Now that's like the bare minimum for a sequel :( I really liked Ghost of Tsushima. If this was the 7th gen of consoles, we'd already have the sequel and would be awaiting the third game. If we're lucky we get GoT 2 next year. Having entire trilogies wrap up in a single console generation seems like a dream now, but it used to be the norm

9:00 you could make that game, it'd just take an unpredictably long amount of time and almost no publisher would pay for seemingly endless development - at least not without replacing key members on the development team or forcing an incomplete game to release.

Abstractly, yes. I was referring to a name developer. Rockstar couldn't even pull off Cyberpunk's pitch, though they would probably get the closest of any developer.

I don't know if the actual 'woke' political stuff is as much to blame as it is the idea that video games are no longer passion projects from people who worked their way up through video games over the years. Most people who ran these video game companies decades ago were people who loved video games in general. Or at the very least used to, and knew what it took to make high quality games like clockwork.
This passion made crunch not just acceptable, but something that even leadership participated in. Enter in: suits. Like you said, many of these college educated 'professionals' don't care about video games as much as they care about just getting a check and putting a shiny title on their linkedin.
Which leads to developers being hired that just want to do what is in their job description and nothing more. Don't get me wrong, crunch was a flawed solution to begin with... But it worked. Just like how many great artists have to bust their tail and sacrifice a lot of their time and life in order to get a high quality product out.
When it's just a normal company like any other and the art is lost.... Well, then it goes down the path of least resistance in terms of money making. Publicly traded companies like many video game publishers are these days have simply gotten too big and have hired executives that only care about a share price. Get in, get stock, make stock go up, jump ship to the next company. They don't care about long term negatives if they're leaving in a few years.
The sad fact is that once a video game company gets too large, it's too large for their own good. And with the market saturated by these large to middling companies... It's harder and harder for good work to rise to the top. Indie developers are great, passionate, and have an artistic vision for what a great game is... But they don't have the resources to compete with the other companies that can ship out a less than mediocre product that still makes money.
There's so many variables as to why it's like this, but I truthfully don't see a way out. But if you find a good indie developer, support them. They are all we truly have these days.

Currently playing hogwarts legacy. It is pretty good especially from the usual AAA standard, but i deep down kinda wish they kept those niche things the first 3 harry potter games had, like in game point system, wizard cards, a quirky money system, quidditch. Hopefully they will make more portkey games, since it is so successful.

Honestly, all the people complaining about longer dev cycles are the same people who whin about buggy releases and sub par graphics. Which do you want?
And honestly, you complain about less games when in reality there’s just too many nowadays. They just don’t come from the same 5 AAA developers. They come from the dozens and dozens of AAA, AA and indies combined.
And besides, wouldn’t you rather have a quality title every 3-4 or 5 years rather than every year with diminishing returns?
