My daughter has danced competitively since age 5. Her dance company competes locally and nationally, and does jazz, tap, ballet, modern, hip hop, you name it…She’s interested continuing dance with the spirit squad at USAFA. I realize dance isn’t a “varsity sport”, but she has probably averaged 20 hours a week practicing and performing for the past 12 years. There isn’t a team captain role in her dance company, but she volunteers to teach the younger dancers weekly. To me, and I realize I’m biased, she’s an amazing athlete…Do you think the admissions personnel would give her the same credit as someone who earned a varsity letter in cheerleading? Any advice? Thank you
I'm not on the selection committee but she sounds outstanding. Her level of involvement shows a deep commitment to her sport, which they like to see. If she has the grades and test scores, she should be a very strong candidate. Good luck!
I believe that they should and would give her the same credit but she has to be well rounded in other areas such as; community service, volunteer, activities such as scouting, 4H, etc... Being a well rounded candidate with some leadership experience is key.
I am engaged in one sport, however, that sport practices and competes through the spring, summer, fall, and winter. Will this affect my chances as I am unable to be a multi-sport athlete due to my already existing commitment?
No, it will not affect your chances as long as you are well rounded in other areas such as; community service, volunteer, activities such as scouting, 4H, etc... Being a well rounded candidate with some leadership experience is key.
Funny...my son wants to pursue an application to USNA in nuclear engineering.
