One of the best women free skaters in the history of our sport. She was years before her time - great jumps - first ever triple lutz landed in competition by a woman and exquisite spins. I always felt that had she stayed amateur after winning 1981 Worlds she would have gone on to win Olympic Gold in Sarajevo in 1984.
Winning the 1981 Worlds allowed Denise to have a great career as a pro. That was all the boost she needed. I was relieved when she won the Worlds. She could then finally earn a good salary as a pro, and it would make all the sacrifices, hard work, and injuries worth it. However, none of her performances could match how impressed I was the first time I saw her skate, when she was 12 and I found myself on the same ice in Zurich one day. She seemed to take such joy in her skating during practice, and in addition to two triple jumps, I had never seen the spin variation that would bear her name, so it was a mind-blowing day. I talked to her mother then, and she told me Denise's figures were a disaster. One thing younger skating fans who grew up post-1990 wouldn't fully appreciate, after figures were eliminated from competition, is how frustrating skating competitions could be when the winner of compulsory figures would take the gold, even if sometimes their free skating was as low as 7th place, which was the case in the 1972 Olympics when Trixi Schuba won over Karen Magnussen and Janet Lynn. The Olympics are the big moment a skater trains all their young years for, and then wobble on a freaking figure, or put a foot down, and no chance of winning a medal, even if you are in first place in free skating as Denise was. Even worse sometimes, skaters who did not have the money to train figures, or skaters who started too late to master figures, couldn't even qualify for skating competitions. In 1980, if a skater had all their quads, they wouldn't have been allowed to compete, unless they could also do figures enough to pass qualifying tests. Some of those skaters switched to pairs or ice dance since, arbitrarily, figures were not required as part of those competitive disciplines.

One of those skaters was Jayne Torvill, who won the British national title in pairs in 1972 (72-73 season) with her first partner. He moved away/broke up the partnership after that, and Jayne tried to skate singles for awhile, but she couldn't pass the tests because she hated figures. Fortunately, she partnered up with Christopher Dean two years later. And interestingly, ice dance doesn't/didn't have figures, but it does/did have compulsory dances.
Denise was just practicing in her amateur career. She blew the world away with her pro career. Stayed in top physical condition and continued skating right up to 50 yrs old.

decades later and this is still a stunning performance; she has a beautifully feminine style that is distinctly hers; lithe graceful powerful; loved that she was artistic yet modern/contemporary she did not have to resort to the classical balletic style but invented her own style. I respect her so much because she knew she would pay a price for trying to be more inventive (in the very conservative world of figure skating). But went for it anyway. She had the courage of her convictions. Yet she never once was anything less than a total LADY, showing great sportsmanship. The USA and I notice ITALY adores her too. Elvis Stoyko in Mens Figure Skating is the same. He smiles thought it when he pays a price. I love them both. The USA loves Denise and Elvis!

She was incredibly flexible. I saw her in 1995 at the professional championships. All the new women were the highlight. She definitely deserves more credit for skating. I believe her mother was her coach

Without the technicals, she would have won the gold at Lake Placid! OMG! Today's figure skaters don't deal with the technicals anymore. She remains the greatest women's free skater to this day!

She is the only one skater that can do that spin. The stretch of her back, arms, and legs is magnificent. Her spin is perfectly centered. Every other skater who has done this spin is pulled of center because the are not flexible enough.

She should have won the competition as should Ito in 88. These old school figures were a complete joke, holding back the real winners of these competitions.

You always have to wonder about Denise Biellmann and what would have been if she hadn't retired in 1981. Judging by her level of performance here, executing one of the first triple Lutzes and popularizing the Biellmann spin position, I mean those are the standard in women's skating even in 2020. Judging by the level she competed at professionally in the 1990s where immediately following the 1994 Olympics she still dominated and regularly wiped the floor with Oksana Baiul and Nancy Kerrigan both while well into her 30s and by the end of the decade also beat Kristi Yamaguchi in pro competition. It's just that pro titles don't hold Olympic clout. There is little doubt in my mind that if she continued on the Olympic scene, Katarina Witt, as much I love her, would not have been the double champion star she became. She likely would not have had those Olympic golds or even those European titles. Denise would have been the force to be reckoned with for the entire decade and could have still impacted in Lillehamer if she felt like it.
It is CRAZY to me that the person who came in 2nd in the Short and 1st in the Long ends up in 4th....and the Gold Medalist was 4th in the Short and 3rd in the Long....and the Bronze was 5th and 6th. (At least Silver won the Short and was 2nd in the Long). CF were weighted too much over actual skating.

If it weren't for the lame compulsory figures, she'd be the gold medalist. If the ordinals system that was implemented starting at the 1981 Worlds, here's what the results would be: GOLD - Fratianne - 4.2 ordinals SILVER - Poetzsch - 5.2 BRONZE - Biellmann - 9 4th - Lurz - 9.2 5th - Allen - 10
She remembered for Biellmann spin if she won or not. McDonald brothers are remembered for McDonalds restaurants even though they went bankrupt, hopefully that did not happen to her.
Замечу, что здесь ей 17 лет и три месяца. Роста она была небольшого, всего 160 см, при этом уже в 14 выглядело взрослой женщиной, очень красивой и привлекательной. ОЧ она не стало, потому что рано было, в те годы медали давали "за выслугу лет", а к следующей Олимпиаде она уже ушла из спорта, перейдя а профессионалы.

She is one of my favorite skaters, and I had the pleasure of having being trained by Otto Hügin at Dolder ice rink in Zürich. Really nice atmosphere.

And boy could she telegraph a jump. I think that's such an unattractive quality in skaters would you just blatantly overly telegraph a jump.
They had compulsory figures they illuminated which is different than technical scores.

She is the only one skater that can do that spin. The stretch of her back, arms, and legs is magnificent. Her spin is perfectly centered. Every other skater who has done this spin is pulled of center because the are not flexible enough.
She's the best but you may want to try and check a male skater named Michael Martinez. He has the best biellman in the male category for me

monica carranco nah, katarina was lucky Denise turned pro. Denise went on to win loads of pro competitions even in the 90s.
I totally agree, she was so much better than the overrated Witt.

Обратите внимание, она катается в обратную сторону. Опорная нога правая. Вращения, в том числе в прыжках, по часовой стрелке. Такая ситуация бывает очень редко.
Я тоже подметила. Стала искать в инете подтверждение что она левша, не нашла

You always have to wonder about Denise Biellmann and what would have been if she hadn't retired in 1981.
Judging by her level of performance here, executing one of the first triple Lutzes and popularizing the Biellmann spin position, I mean those are the standard in women's skating even in 2020.
Judging by the level she competed at professionally in the 1990s where immediately following the 1994 Olympics she still dominated and regularly wiped the floor with Oksana Baiul and Nancy Kerrigan both while well into her 30s and by the end of the decade also beat Kristi Yamaguchi in pro competition. It's just that pro titles don't hold Olympic clout.
There is little doubt in my mind that if she continued on the Olympic scene, Katarina Witt, as much I love her, would not have been the double champion star she became. She likely would not have had those Olympic golds or even those European titles. Denise would have been the force to be reckoned with for the entire decade and could have still impacted in Lillehamer if she felt like it.
It is CRAZY to me that the person who came in 2nd in the Short and 1st in the Long ends up in 4th....and the Gold Medalist was 4th in the Short and 3rd in the Long....and the Bronze was 5th and 6th. (At least Silver won the Short and was 2nd in the Long). CF were weighted too much over actual skating.

После короткой шла восьмой,выиграв прозвольную,заняла четвертой место.Насчёт хореграфии.Выигравшая золото фигуристка из ГДР Анет Пётч пластикой,артистизмом особо не выделяется.Просто технична и стабильно выступала.

If it weren't for the lame compulsory figures, she'd be the gold medalist.
If the ordinals system that was implemented starting at the 1981 Worlds, here's what the results would be:
GOLD - Fratianne - 4.2 ordinals
SILVER - Poetzsch - 5.2
BRONZE - Biellmann - 9
4th - Lurz - 9.2
5th - Allen - 10
She remembered for Biellmann spin if she won or not. McDonald brothers are remembered for McDonalds restaurants even though they went bankrupt, hopefully that did not happen to her.

Роста она была небольшого, всего 160 см, при этом уже в 14 выглядело взрослой женщиной, очень красивой и привлекательной.
ОЧ она не стало, потому что рано было, в те годы медали давали "за выслугу лет", а к следующей Олимпиаде она уже ушла из спорта, перейдя а профессионалы.
