    P.S. Can you compare Mickey Mouse III for NES and Castle of Illusion for Master System?

    • @thelovebat
      @thelovebat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PS1 vs N64 vs Saturn would probably be more appropriate (mixing and matching based on the game). There aren't really many muliplatform games you could compare between just the N64 and the Sega Saturn due to the short lifespan for the Saturn and less 3rd party support that overlaps between the two consoles. PS1 vs N64 and PS1 vs Sega Saturn would probably have more comparisons to look at.

    • @oscarzxn4067
      @oscarzxn4067 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Saturn and N64 are like polar opposites though, they do completely different things, in the areas when one shine, the other sucks. Maybe you can compare Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem and some racing games, IDK what else.

    Ninja Gaiden SMS looks like a solid game, but my heart will always belong to the original. It's hard, yes, but like Greg said, DAMN fun and satisfying once you finally master it and can call yourself a true ninja master. To quote the ninja from the AVGN episode: "Playing Ninja Gaiden is a secret art, only the MOST determined players can defeat it". This game kicks you in the nutsack at first, but when you become good enough to turn the tables, it makes you a platforming god.
    I actually heard that being sent back to stage 6-1 was a glitch/error that they decided to keep in to make the game more challenging.

    Anyway, I honestly probably would've give best gameplay to the Master System. • @zanegandini5350
    @zanegandini5350 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Yeah, the Master System's dpad is just plain awful. Between that and the lack of a pause button on the controller, I'm not sure what Sega was thinking. This episode pretty much went the way I expected it to, considering the hardware. The Master System was a graphics and performance powerhouse compared to the NES: Faster processor, larger color palette, and could handle more colors and animation on-screen at once, so it's a surprise it lost to the NES when it came to the cutscenes, as it could easily have all the animation the NES did, and then some. However, the Master System had one glaring weakness compared to the NES, and that was the soundchip. The NES had 5 channels: 2 PSG channels, a triangle wave channel, a white noise channel , and a PCM sample channel (used in this game for the percussion samples). The Master System, on the other hand, only had four channels: 3 PSG channels and a white noise channel. This meant that the system was only capable of two different types of sounds, and the white noise channel was generally used for both percussion and sound effects, causing the percussion to cut out whenever a sound effect was played back. On top of that, the Master System's soundchip was incapable of low frequency sounds, leading to the characteristic high-pitched tone it's known for. The Japanese Master System was superior in this regard, since it had the FM soundchip as well, but Ninja Gaiden wouldn't utilize that as the Master System was discontinued in Japan by that time, so it's no wonder the NES version sounds so much better.
    Figured I'd provide some technical insight for this comparison, in case some of you are wondering.

      Nein Nopes You must not have used an actual Master System control pad, then, because from experience I can tell you it is stiff as all hell.

    • @zanegandini5350
      @zanegandini5350 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It just feels very stiff. You can press the direction you want to go with the NES dpad, and physically feel the d-pad tilt in that direction. The Master System'd d-pad was essentially flat, and it's easy to press the wrong direction when playing games like Outrun, and end up accidentally downshifting without meaning to. Since you lived in Brazil, did you ever try playing Street Fighter II on the Master System with one of those controllers? I imagine that would have been a real chore.

    • @zanegandini5350
      @zanegandini5350 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't agree, I think the Genesis and Saturn controllers have the best d-pads, especially for fighting games or any game that uses all 8 directions.

      Yeah, i remember story somebody using GG to freeze the timer in that level so he could listen the music loops indefinitely.

    As always great episode, but guys, do something with your sound. Room scenes have echo, voice over is distorted (too high volume for mic input). Some acoustic panels, better mic level will fix that. Also, compressor for sound in video editor.

    Thank you!!!!! I've been hounding you guys with this request for years now. Great comparison review, I agree with almost everything, except I kinda wished it was a tie. And I didn't seem to have that controller problem on the SMS version, and I do use a regular Master System controller. I flew through some levels like a levitating ninja. Look up the Sega SG Hori Commander controller for the SMS and wonder why America didn't get those. Keep these 8 bit Console Wars coming!!

    This opens up the doors for so many possibilities if you don't just do SNES and Genesis. Mortal Kombat 4, WWF Attitude, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 and so many more. Maybe you guys can add a new guy called PlayStation (for special occasions of course) so you guys can do so many other games released for 2 of the 3 consoles, like Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Sonic Heroes, WWF Games for PS and N64 (Maybe WWF Attitude for all of them, or NWO vs. WCW: World Tour vs. Wrestlemania 2000). The possibilities are practically endless. I am just fantasizing at this point.

    I owned both consoles growing up. Personally, I have always preferred the Master System versions of NES games. The graphics and sound were always better on Sega’s 8-bit console.

    • @AngryCalvin
      @AngryCalvin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. I had an NES and my cousin had a Sega. His games were way better. I have been a Sega fan ever since. They build much better quality consoles and had a far better game library. And their controllers don't suck. I hated N64 and loved Saturn and Dreamcast. Genesis rocked. SNES was slow and sluggish and their games have aged horribly.

    • @Halbared
      @Halbared 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @shadowshinobi06 Yes, the Master system sound was limited. Nes was certainly able to hold it's own graphically which was not bad for a system that was almost three years older. A lot of Master system games also suffered from wonky detection, but a lot were very good as well.

    I like how the NES cart was loose, and he pulls out a boxed MS version. Those cases sega used really made it easy to keep things boxed, vs cardboard that rips and tears and doesn't exactly easily let you put everything back in it.
