Yeah. I can't speak for New Zealand (where this is filmed and set), but I know here in Australia renters have very few rights compared to much of Western Europe. My Grandfather is one of the landlords who fixes the issues around the places he leases. I wasn’t aware of this stereotype, he has always made sure to do the job proper and right. Been doing it since he was young. He still does it to this day, I respect him a lot for it, but it’s very interesting to see the other side of the coin! Another great one VLDL!
That's the issue, there's those who know what they're doing and try it (actually call for a specialist if they're uncertain tho), and then there's those that do it because it's cheaper with no clue whatsoever - and I assume (or hope) your grandfather was the first type, because the 2nd type... we don't really need to talk about that.
As a small time landlord I hire plumbers and electricians for things beyond my skillset / require licensing but if I can buy a 10$ part and watch a 30 min youtube video to fix it I typically go that route. For example the tenants Dryer recently broke, would have been 500$ for a new one or 125$ for a technician. Hypothetically the less money we spend on upkeep the less money we need to charge tenants for rent....though I don't feel my fellow landlords take this to heart as much as they should.
Heh, had a rental like this before. It's a legal requirement in the UK to have a gas safety certificate for any rental property - the agency had it done on the day we moved in, and the engineer identified a dangerous fault with the gas cooker, which ended up with him condemning it and turning off the gas! The landlord ended up sending round another "engineer" to "fix" it (we suspect a mate with a van and a fake ID card, since we couldn't find any record of him or his company details on the Gas Safe Register). A bit of digging later (it's amazing what you can find on the internet), and we managed to track down the landlord's details. An email pointing out that breaching gas safety regulations was a criminal offence with a potential prison sentence resulted in a new cooker being installed within 2 days... We followed this up by delivering in person a CDR (yes, that long ago!) full of photos of existing damage to the property in order to protect our deposit; surprisingly enough, we had no more trouble with the property and got all of our deposit back!
This series is more of a documentary than a satire. I once rented a similar apartment from a landlord who behaved exactly the same way. He also tried to fix everything himself, even though he had no idea. The result of his repairs was that a beautiful, fluffy mold grew on the wall, looking like a pet. I ran away from there very quickly. If I had lived there longer, I probably would have given that mold a name.
2:39 did Rowan clean his hands before digging into the cookies? 🤢 I wish my landlord would fix things on my death star as efficiently. Then I wouldn't have to build a bigger one.

This is fucking spot on to my current property manager...we call about a leaking pipe from the 2nd floor apartment creating mold in a closet and bathroom ceiling, they come 2 weeks later and tell us to just clean the mold with bleach....yeah, we already know how to clean mold, but how about fixing the actual problem creating it..."No, it's your fault for not using the fan when you take a shower..." ummm, so is that why we have mold coming down the wall in the closet of the bedroom on the other side of the wall too jack ass?
Mold fix is $9k-12k. I think the inside of the wall which contain the wood has mold in it. If he/she/owner doesn't fix it, it will become very large and bleach would not work on it. I suggest to you to move out immediately because black mold is detrimental to everyone in your household including pets.
Hey guys, thank you for helping other writers, directors and actors get a leg up in the business- it is really great of you to pass on the blessings! I think the only way to stop an evil Rowan like this is to have a Lawful good Karen (yes, there are such things) as building inspector, police, prosecuting attorney and judge. I know it would be a lot of work for the actress, but it would be so sweet for Rowan to get a bit of his own back!
Currently gutting and HOPING to repair an old rental house. Can confirm this is exactly how rental repairs work. Only part you got wrong is that Rowan should've superglued a second layer of plastic tiles to fix the moldy tiles. Then maybe installed an assemble-yourself sauna kit that'll break in 2-4weeks over top of the shower
This reminds of the time i was living in a rental and i called the real estate agent about a problem with the toilet, told them it wasn't a handyman job as id do it myself if that was the case, needed a plumber. Several weeks go by and the property owner turns up with his tools, lovely old chap mind you, he took one look and said the same thing, need a plumber. Lucky the place had a second toilet as it was several more weeks before a plumber turned up.
This really is wat quite some landlords do in a bit lesser extent. Im a landlord too but i would hate myself if i were to be like this. I do try to fix as many things myself but as soon as i know i cant fix it up to my standard at home, then i call an expert.
I had a plumbing issue affecting my apartment and my neighbors. It took myself and my neighbor submitting maintenance requests multiple times to finally get it fixed.
Oof, I actually think we may have minor PTSD from our 3 year lease we just got out of because this is SO funny... But it 100% brings up all that anxiety again at the same time 😂 Well done you guys
When I was a carpet fitter, property owners used to pick the cheapest carpets but didn’t bother with new underlay. So we’d be fitting the new cheap carpets onto the old underlay which had usually disintegrated into literal dust. The property owner will still say, “It’s like walking on a cloud.” Well you’re technically right because you’d fall right through a fuckin cloud if you trod on one.
Yuck. I’m currently tearing up a more than 40 year old carpet in my parents home and the underlay has crumbled. I’m removing it with a dust pan. Putting carpet over that would be a health hazard. People doing stuff like that always makes me wary of real estate ads for obviously flipped houses, with their cheap finishes and grey vinyl flooring. I have to wonder what’s under the new drywall.
It took me 18 months to get my landlady to fix a hole in the roof. When i said the dripping sound of water in the bucket was doing my head in i was told to put an old pillow in the bucket to stop the sound
I had a landlord like this, anything i would call her about she would come check it out herself. she would get somebody over to properly fix it, but she would always come over herself and check it out first with no warning and in a VERY invasive way.
One time there was a tree root growing into a pipe and the toilet would throw out poop water. The second time she got a plumber that she paid to say that it was us that flushed toilet paper. She also sold us a bed bug infested mattress from another tenant that left without all their stuff. We left after that.
Depending on where you live the tenancy laws can be toothless. Plenty of slumlords like this in Canada now; just not quite so obvious and more constantly playing dumb...
Yeah, my current "rental agency" came through, since they just took over. I have a small crack in the bathtub. So, I showed them. Then, they asked if it was leaking. I told them I don't know, since I take showers. At the property before this, we had rain going through the roof, into the bathroom window. We repeatedly called them about it. They did minor patch jobs. Then, when we moved out, they tried to charge us to fix it.
This is why i take pride in my work as a Maintenance Supervisor at an apartment complex. Everything is done immediately and right. If I can't fix it, I call someone who can.
I still can’t get over 2:43 Rowan grabbing a chocolate chip after he literally just touched black mold like 2 seconds ago😂😭🤢. Then, proceeds to wash his hands after😭😭
I know this is just a skit, but it still infuriates me to no end, because I've heard/read stories of similar situations. Me and my sister are about to rent out our late parent's house and I vouch to never become like this. We're gonna be fair and keep the house in proper condition long-term (after all, that's one of the main reasons we decided to rent it out instead of selling it).
Still better than my landlord who told us all the broken glass & detritus would be out of the yard before we moved in. Know when he took care of it? Three years later, after selling the house and making us move out.
I actually met someone once who owned houses and rented them out before he retired. He was however, still both a licensed plumber and electrician. He said he wanted to be able to do it right because he remembered his landlord doing a crappy job so he got licensed before he started doing stuff, and if he was too busy to fix it himself he'd pay for someone to do it an never let anything take longer than a week.
This were about the average property managers when I was studying in the Netherlands. The houses were literally falling apart. When you called them you can expect them in about a month and they just put a bit of paint over the rotten pieces of wood that were partially broken off.
Ah yes, a classic example of what my sis would call "The Manager Special." Hole in the wall? Plaster over it. Mold in the tub corners? Sealant over it. Electrical sockets not working? Paint over it. There we go, all fixed!
@Viva La Dirt League....this is so me in the role of the tenant. Took them 4 years to fix a radiator tap, 5 years to get a cupboard made for the exposed wires, 4 years to install a thermostat for the boiler ( wrong one of course), 4 years to fix the garden wall and door and when they did it they were wrong (back of the door and fence were flipped to the outside), installed wrong Kitchen taps, mold and damp and all my complaints need to be made on their website but they don't get them because my email has "problems". But somehow we exchange emails regarding the new contract they want me to sign.😂😂😂
This series is great -- totally reminds me of the first apartment I had after college... this was a place where, when I called the office to report that the clothes rack bar in my closet was sagging, Maintenance came over and literally hammered a sharpened stake of wood into the drywall below the bar to "fix" the problem. ^_^
When I saw my previous landlord repairing the apartment. Getting hands on with his own properties. I was like... Wow! This guy cares! Finally a landlord who actually fixes stuff! I was oh so wrong about that.
To add to the landlord stories. In one apartment I had the heat go out during a -8F Friday night. Landlord said he couldn't do anything until Monday. Ended up just needing to flip the breaker...
Genuinely reminds me of one of my landlords from a set of shithole flats converted from an old motel. Place was an absolute slum and the guy was useless. I had a benchtop stove in my place, built into the counter, and it was so poorly maintained that the metal underneath the coils had rusted, letting any spilled water leak all over the high voltage electricals. I turned it on one night, and the entire thing started arcing. Turned it off and called him, he didn't believe me that there was an actual issue. He comes round, casually flicks it on, and almost electrocutes himself. If his hand was on the stove, he might have died. So he switches it off at the switchboard, and, because he was one of 'those' landlords, decides he'll fix it himself. Reckons the entire issue is because the indicator light wiring was damaged. Tells me he'll just disconnect the two elements connected to that light and the other two will be fine to use. Does his shitty unlicensed work, turns it all on, shock (heh) horror nothing had changed and he almost killed himself again. So he gives up, then goes to leave, and I have to specifically ask him to entirely disconnect the power to it because he was just gonna leave it connected. If the switch got knocked or anything, it would have killed someone, so I'm not having that. He finally does so while complaining, and tells me he's gonna get a replacement in. In the six months after that, never got any kind of replacement, and I was having to cook with a microwave and George Foreman grill. Wish I knew my tenancy rights back then. The real kicker is the fuckwit had the audacity to try and raise the rent during Covid for the entire complex, which was deemed illegal by the government. He didn't like that I told all of our neighbours that, because he was just gonna not tell them the rent raise was cancelled. Hope that prick has been arrested since, that place is a death trap.
My landlord is actually amazing when it comes to this, I text him an issue and when I get home from work it is fixed. My sister and her friend though had this exact issue, mold in 2 rooms, landlord was a girl living 5 hours away studying, she refused to change the window that was moldy, blamed them for everything. Was going to rent out to immigrants or something and when I guess someone from the city came for inspection and saw the mold the girl acted oh so surprised over how the mold got there. She didn't want to pay the depositum back but man did she get all shy when she realized our mom and dad was there with my sister, she asked what they worked with and she was given a small white lie, that being that one was a cop and the other a lawyer. Needless to say my sister got her money back and now she, a friend and her guy is renting an actual house that looks far better.
The funniest part about these skits aren’t the characters like the one Rowan is playing, but the customers/victims that have the patience of gods when dealing with others.
Lived in an apartment block that was used by mainly students going to a nearby university. Property managers required parents to co-sign for students. Mysteriously whenever repairs were requested by students it resulted in the property managers filing lawsuits against parents to cover the repairs. Since my husband and I, both students, didn't have co-signers on our lease, our repairs we just handled.
Nice thing where I'm living, our Landlord was being grossly negligent, so we did multiple reports to the Landlord Tenant Board and they actually had the bank reposes the house. Our rent stopped increasing each year and became fixed, the bank in the contract was not allowed to sell the house. Eventually it came to something needing to be repaired and the bank gave me the cost of the house, and our cost of rent was the mortgage. Almost paid it off as when the bank puts up the cost of a house they really low ball market value. Oh and my Landlord had to sell his house because he was using the rent of this house to pay for both his and this house
I don't know about NZ but in the U.S. this kind of stuff is most common with owner-managed properties. Professional property managers have a lot more legal liability, and the courts hold them to a higher standard. Also, when this does happen with professional property managers, I see this more in high regulatory environments like Los Angeles. The regulatory environment makes it very difficult and expensive to make sure all the rules are followed, so a lot of PMs work in the grey area and fly by the seat of their pants. The tenants often have rent control, meaning their rent is below market, so moving to a new place too expensive.
The wall magically got filled more while they were in the kitchen... This episode though, felt myself tensing more and more as it went on. That struck a nerve!
My old landlord was great for 7 years. Then COVID happened and all but my family and one other tenant stopped paying rent and he lost his butt. For some reason after lockdowns ended and eviction was allowed he decided to make his money back by raising the rent of his only 2 paying tenants by 300 dollars a month, them stopped doing repairs and upkeep. Our water heater broke and he wouldn't fix it so we had no warm water for months, found a leaking pipe inside of the wall he didn't want to fix it. Got so bad when we finally got out of there the entire laundry room wall was a mold colony he expected us to deal with. It was a horrible experience and I still don't know what the hell his problem was.
Reminds of a former flat where the advice was to open the window every day in the middle of the winter and blast the heat in that room for a few hours so as to prevent mold. By the way, it wasn't a bathroom or kitchen. It was a frigging bedroom.
One of the funniest things happened to us, our heater was broken and we lived in a place that got really cold so we needed heat. Rowan just THRIVES doing these horrible characters, he’s so good! 😂 “Aw yuck!”
Too accurate, I say with a kitchen sink that's not drained in a year.
To be fair at some point its your fault for not fixing it yourself.
A year!? By that time id have downloaded a how-to and fixed it myself
@@contrapasso1539 but what if you're not confident and worried you'll damage something. The landlord would absolutely blame you for that. It's also simply the landlord's responsibility by law to keep things functional
@@contrapasso1539 with a lease you may not be allowed to fix things your self, the landlord can prob toss you out on the street if you do it. And if you get away with the repair you will be toast when you move out and get blamed for any damage done to the apartment and get enormous bill to total renovating the apartment. So document all damage by have professional inspector before you move in and don't do any job in your apartment you don't get the landlords permit in writing and have the apartment inspected when you move out or it can be expensive as hell. I don't know how it is in your home country but seen ppl get fucked over badly in Denmark, Germany, UK, USA and Sweden so dont do anything if you are renting or they will fuck you up and they have often better lawyers then you and you may end up paying court fees also.
"There's no number on this!" 😂
My Grandfather is one of the landlords who fixes the issues around the places he leases.
Theres absolutely Competent houseowners who rent out and are handy.
Also a good way of getting rid of the black mould is to paint over it! Happened to a friend of mine! On landlord‘s order!🤯
Had a landlord whose fix was to spray bleach all over the black moulded wall.
@@UberStarFkrbleach kills it. that's what a lot of anti-mould sprays are. But of course you gotta address the source of the issue as well
@@UberStarFkr hope you had good ventilation
This is Rowan's most aggravating and annoying character
And that says something, given that he's the manager. But there hes part annoying part funny at least
If I had lived there longer, I probably would have given that mold a name.
.. haha, washes his hands and then tries to unplug an electrical socket. Awesome.
Better call Paul.
Paul's not here man. He's in space
Well I'm here but I'm not a licensed electrician, sorry.
If he's as good as Saul he's in good hands lol
just once...just once I would like to see Rowan be the good guy and someone else stepping on his toes.
That’s basically any skit where it’s just him and Ben.
When you think it can't get any worse, the move that follows gets totally wild! You guys are masters at creating emotional buildup.
2:39 did Rowan clean his hands before digging into the cookies? 🤢
I wish my landlord would fix things on my death star as efficiently. Then I wouldn't have to build a bigger one.
Nope
Cringe
“Vater” are you Indian?? 🤣🤣
@@Sluchayniy
No. He's cringe.
@@Sol_Badguy_GG Claiming that someone is cringy while your account is named after a dude whose name is already cringy on purpose... now **that** is cringy.
This one hits close to home because I've had property managers come and do this type of crap.
The worst part about that is that bleach doesn't actually clean mold, it only superficially removes it and it *looks* like it's gone...
Lawful Good Karen. Careful what you wish for.
It would be amusing for sure.
Just noticed that the landlord company is called "Trust Us", that sounds about right for landlords in general.....
03:34 This Happy Birthday drawing is perfect today, because it's Alan's birthday who has 2 little girls.
Not a second layer of tiles, just a few loose tiles barely covering the initial stain 🤣
Haha that guy was waaaaay to chill to Rowan😂😂😂
I don't think frozen vegetables are the medical remedy for electrical shocks, lol.
OMG WHY IS THIS SO RELATABLE? OUR LANDLORD DOESN'T EVEN FIX SHE JUST YELLS AT US.
I had a plumbing issue affecting my apartment and my neighbors. It took myself and my neighbor submitting maintenance requests multiple times to finally get it fixed.
Feels illegal being this already
*early?
What?
Nice vocabulary
I too am very already.
I came too illegal too.
Yeah, this hits far too close to home. The landlords need a comeuppance.
Oof, I actually think we may have minor PTSD from our 3 year lease we just got out of because this is SO funny... But it 100% brings up all that anxiety again at the same time 😂
Well done you guys
Remember! Wash hands AFTER the cookie , NOT before ! Especially not after You stick same hand into some shit on the wall !!! 😉
Did I hear Ellie? She will be loved with what she will see😆
No slum lords here, good people!!
2:42 looks like the guy cleaned the cookies from his CASE
Reminds me of how I had shit come up my shower for over a year. Never a proper plumber came to fix it. Showered at my parents for almost a year.
The only thing that's inaccurate is him turning up.
Some you'll never see, some turn up unannounced all the time.
Way too real. I thought this was supposed to be comedy. Funny how this could pass as a reality show as well.
It took me 18 months to get my landlady to fix a hole in the roof. When i said the dripping sound of water in the bucket was doing my head in i was told to put an old pillow in the bucket to stop the sound
The dude in green is brilliant.
that kind of people, not only among the private property owners, but also in public social services..
Are people not allowed to fight this kind of behaviour? Obviously it's satire but I can't help but feel that someone went through this already 😂
Rowan you can't get into homes and do the plumbing YOU'RE THE MANAGER!
As a landlord myself I find these videos both educational and inspiring.
In the immortal words of Freddy Mercury
"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?"
Talk to Ellie and she will get a real craftsman.
Is she still with them? Not one of the originals but better than these new ones
@@memphisdaniels3218 She was mentioned as the tenant's girlfriend.
Who hasnt had a landlord like this?
I still can’t get over 2:43 Rowan grabbing a chocolate chip after he literally just touched black mold like 2 seconds ago😂😭🤢. Then, proceeds to wash his hands after😭😭
I know this is just a skit, but it still infuriates me to no end, because I've heard/read stories of similar situations.
Me and my sister are about to rent out our late parent's house and I vouch to never become like this. We're gonna be fair and keep the house in proper condition long-term (after all, that's one of the main reasons we decided to rent it out instead of selling it).
All landlords say this, until the tenant calls them with issues every month 😂😂😂
This one was actually good :)
And the wall... It had almost fixed itself by the end of the episode! lol Rowan know what he is doing :D
Landlords legit get superpowers when given access to white paint. Mine fixed my wall, my car, and my marriage!
I respect the effort to make the landlord unrelatable.
Atleast Rowan put in some effort 😂 while landlords will just pretend to call someone to fix it
I was expecting him to tear down the wall and leave it be, to fight the wet pipes with more fresh air.
This were about the average property managers when I was studying in the Netherlands. The houses were literally falling apart. When you called them you can expect them in about a month and they just put a bit of paint over the rotten pieces of wood that were partially broken off.
I've never wanted to punch Rowan with such visceral intensity. Great Job Team! You really nailed the vibe on this one.
Ah yes, a classic example of what my sis would call "The Manager Special." Hole in the wall? Plaster over it. Mold in the tub corners? Sealant over it. Electrical sockets not working? Paint over it. There we go, all fixed!
Lol the way he went into the pantry and took the cookies.
At least this landlord came out lol
Slaps the top of guillotine, "You can fit so many Landlords, CEOs and Insurance Raters in this bad boy."
Maintenance de Routine
This series is great -- totally reminds me of the first apartment I had after college... this was a place where, when I called the office to report that the clothes rack bar in my closet was sagging, Maintenance came over and literally hammered a sharpened stake of wood into the drywall below the bar to "fix" the problem. ^_^
Rowan is one scary monster... didn't even wash the dooky off his hands before diving into that cookie!
I love it how the hole in the wall was actually smaller at the end of the skit as it was when he finished working on it XD
I love how Rowan made everything ten times worse 😂
Why?
When he grabbed the electric and got shocked I’d be like “oh I think you’re fixing it, grab it again!”
oh nooo that's Jerry's house entrance😮 thank God his empty up stairs
0:40 - That fucking mould merkin on the tiles! 😂
It is accurate and it is hilarious, come on guys. :') I love the fact rowan just ties the whole ensemble together with that outfit haha.
This is why I don't fix anything myself...
Ellie lol He's hitting above his belt.
Iam 100% serious we do have a landlord like that in Germany exactly like that (he is turkish and doesnt give a damn)
Kannst ne Mietreduktion verlangen, wenn es nicht besser wird und die Mietreduktion nicht gemacht wird, dann schalte einen Anwalt ein.
of course he's turkish, he's got his family living in the walls 🪳🪳
Oh and my Landlord had to sell his house because he was using the rent of this house to pay for both his and this house
okay the plaster part killed, but i totally thought it was going in a different direction anyway. still epic, very funny!
Mine always says "Fix it yourself, I'll pay" So I charge him extra for my time 😂
I don't know about NZ but in the U.S. this kind of stuff is most common with owner-managed properties.
Oh don't worry about the black mold, it'll be fine.
Ouch! Ellie's paycut at techtown already noticing. Poor bf😢
