This album is so brutal that my beard just grew a nutsack and my nutsack just grew a beard.
Mastodon is one of the most innovative and versatile metal bands. This album is proof.
EDIT: I didn't say Mastodon *IS* the *MOST* innovative and versatile band. Calm down. Jesus.
Yep.
If only Opeth wasn't around, I would say they'd have the MOST versatile Discography of progressive metal bands.
@@gamefreak23788 Yup but Opeth have like 14 albums.
I guess the throne of versatile goes to the old kings... Paradise Lost :P
Well, there is plenty of other metal bands that are just a versatile as Mastodon like Bathory as an example.
I miss this era of Mastodon.
you and me both
Me three!
I never did miss it that hard, loving the other stuff Mastodon released just as much... but after listening to that dull as fuck Hushed & Grim shit, I kinda do.
I think most of us do
@@JohnMatayas I miss and love their older stuff and maybe like it most of all even...but I still think Hushed is a great fucking album. Everything these guys have put out has been fuckin epic.
May the snare drum rest in peace
rip
It had a productive life
march of the fire ants will forever be one of the greatest metal songs ever
It's pure metal of the highest order.
BradCynical your comment should have 8 million likes
Only the intro is cool and memorable, but all the rest falls flat. You're overreacting.
@@soullessSiIence The riff in the bridge section is fucking beautiful, so I don't know what you're talking about.
it's a fucking masterpiece.
Simply put, one of the best metal albums of all time.
Mac totally agree. A masterpiece
And it's a debut. Just awesome
@@matheusmotta1132 It is technically their debut, but the band members all say Call of the Mastodon their "compilation album" is their first real album. The songs on it are from the couple EP's they released before Remission, check it out.
Yep
Honestly, I think Leviathan is better than this.
Crusher Destroyer, March of the Fire Ants, Trainwreck, & Elephant Man are all great songs, but the album as a whole is a bit ehh for me. The vocals really kinda ruin it in this one for me. (Because they're not as clean, audible to make out individually as on Leviathan)
Amazing discography. From sludge/death/grind to progressive/psychedelic to melodic/rock approach. Mastodon has done it all with honesty, fierce and guts. Fucking awesome band.
theres nothing death or grind about this record. pure sludge/prog
There's psychedelia in Mastodon's music too, but they've never been death or grind
The only thing which has something to do with Death Metal is the fact, that Brann and Bill was played in Tech Death band Lethargy.
Where strides the behemoth has Death influence, It's just that they never sit on a style and call it a day.
There’s definitely at least some death metal influence in this album, they shed almost all of it by the time they made Leviathan though. As for grind, if you listen to Mastodon’s earlier songs like We Built This Come Death you can hear a tiny bit of it in their style, but it’s less prominent here. Just my two cents.
The Mastodon I believe in.
innit
The Mastodon we deserve.
they just arnt angry anymore that's why, they've made it.
@@shillian4770 pantera stayed angry. We all know what happened there
@@shillian4770 They are sad though, I think Hushed and Grim is the best since Crack the Skye.
I gotta say I miss this Mastodon. Still love them but definitely miss this gritty raw fucking kick you in the teeth sound.
God, I miss the old Mastodon.
Relapse is definitely one of my personal favorite record labels. They've worked with some of the best bands ever
Paul Pinargote que chismosito me saliste cainal
Erick Malone cállate prro alv
Yeah but they fucked over many bands too. Like Necrophagist.
Boromir of Gondor what happened with those bands?
Boromir of Gondor please elaborate
The first four albums are life changing
Mastodon is one of my favorite bands
God, Crusher Destroyer and March Of The Fire Ants...2 of the best opening tracks in metal history. Like, those 2 songs just perfectly summarize the entire band. Crushing, catchy, ethereal, epic, sludgy and obscenely well written. Like it or not, you're going to have every note of every song etched in to your brain. I can't believe more bands didn't take this segmented songwriting approach mastodon did. Like, rarely does mastodon write a filler section, also, their use of pick-patterns with notably serene and unorthodox chord shapes is just ogasmic.
This album is pure adrenaline. Passion and fire.
Brann really broke that sound barrier with his drumming...fucking unholy!!
Omg, I know right!!
I lose my mind every time I listen.
Trilobite is so epic sounding. When Mastodon does nautical/underwater sounding stuff they do it oh so right.
Why is nautical/aquatic themed metal always the best?
Leviathan
From Mars to Sirius
Everything by Ahab
Agreed. It's one of my top 3 solid favorites on this album along with Elephant man and Ole Nessie. That song would have been great for the Aquaman movie.
@@nickyelovich3872 Oceanic also
@@nickyelovich3872 A band called The Ocean and particularly their album Pelagial
Yannick Messias you read my mind
This album is so underappreciated it's almost criminal. I'm one of the very few people who considers it my favorite Mastodon album, and that's coming from someone who's listened to every one of their albums a hundred times over!
Boba Fett I think it’s easily their best album. I lost interest after Leviathan personally. But this one is beastly.
This is my fav album of theirs by a long way
I love their first 3 and CtS is pretty good, but this one is probably the best. Elephant Man.
I love all the albums, but this one is so heavy,dark...
This album is special
@@MekanikKommandoh88 losing interest after Leviathan when the next album was Blood Mountain is crazy bro lol
From 2002 to 2017, Mastodon has to have one of the best album line ups of any band out there today.
no fucking bad albums in there discography and not a single song that i havent enjoyed by them so far. Same with Gojira, my 2 favourite fucking bands right now.
Nah, they got weak after Crack the Skye, but fans are so overpraising and delusional they would defend anything their favorite band releases. Even if it's a diaper full of shit.
And some people are so butthurt that a band changed its style slightly and so ignorantly ignore blatantly good music as some kind of ego trip
Well put.
Remission - Heavy as shit, genre defining
Leviathan - Way too much win for one disk
Blood Mountain - Prog at it's best
Crack the Skye - How the fuck does someone not like this?
The Hunter - Underappreciated, many great tracks
Once More Round the Sun - Some of the best grooves I've ever heard
Emperor of Sand - Absolute. Fucking. Masterpiece
@@soullessSiIence Still great songs on those albums imo
The ending of Where Strides The Behemoth is amazing!
this is their best album. i like the technical and chaotic song structures.
A classic album that redefines heavy music. Mastodon have gone on to be innovative, evolving and a band that never stands still. The drumming is ferociously brilliant btw.
For me their best album, heavy & melodic at the same time...
'The sound of perseverance' reminded in its perfection
Aha! I got the same feelings. Pure masterpiece!
wym?
I remember seeing Mastodon 19 years ago during the early days when not many people knew who they were. Still have and wear my remission t-shirt from the tour.
Fuck yea that’s badass, you’re an OG. Whenever I wear mine to shows I usually get some people striking up conversation because they know the album or just like the horse. Definitely my favorite shirt, this album is insane.
This album is so brutal. Holy shit...
The REAL Mastodon
the cover of the album look magnificent
Seeing a bull use its horn to tear out a horses guts and then seeing run around without its insides until finally dying is probably one of the most horrible thing I've ever witnessed.
Scandelously underrated album. A contender for the number one slot among their whole discography, as far as I'm concerned.
Ole Nessie is one of the best metal songs ever written
Fantastic tune
To this day, still one of the heaviest records I’ve heard.
I like the newer Mastodon albums too, but this album is by far their best imo
The bridge section at 04:28 in March Of The Fire Ants is one of the most beautiful bridge sections I've ever heard in metal music, period.
When third track is most insane song you have ever heard...but it just gets better from here...
Every now and then, Brann Dailor plays a drum beat between drum fills. I love this kind of drumming.
Mother Puncher is so raw and powerful, simply amazing... And those fuckin' drums !!
From what I've heard of Mastodon this is still my favorite album of theirs, and Ol'e Nessie is probably my favorite track on the album.
TH-cam music decided to throw in Ol'e Nessie on me randomly in a playlist while driving. And I was thrown for a total loop. What a track.
I wear headphones and it's never loud enough
Has riffs for days, and the drumming is intense as fuck, damn!
I didn't know Mastodon until 2003 when a mate copied this album for me, blew me away.
My god man, I didnt know Mastodon until 2019 when this was a recommended video. Changed my life.
This album is absolutely mesmerizing. I’ll never get over it and I don’t what I’d do without this album. Happy 20th anniversary to remission, what paved the way for these incredible musicians
The bass on Remission and Leviathan is amazingly present... if other great bands paid such attention to bass in the mix we'd have a lot more masterpieces like these...
I always felt Mastodon does disservice to bass mix.
@@rbnh9827 I think it depends a lot on how you're listening. From a laptop the bass is utterly lost, but with headphones it really shines through.
@@JohnMatayas That right ... but even with good headphones like old Audio Technica mastodon bass mixes doesn't have same punch. My opinion tho.
@@rbnh9827 I always felt the exact opposite with Mastodon I've always felt the bass is clear and present, compared to alot of metal bands anyway where the bass is barely audible at all. Always liked Troy's style of playing makes it stand out.
Maybe some don't have great bassists
One of the best albums (and one of the the best debuts) I've ever heard.
Remission - Fire🔥
Leviathan - Water 🌊
Blood Mountain - Earth 🌎
Crack the Skye - aether 🌌
Mastodon - Awesome \m/\m/
Remission - 🔥🔥
Leviathan - 🔥🔥
Blood Mountain - 🔥🔥
Crack The Skye - 🔥🔥
Same goes for ISIS, in my opinion:
Celestial - Fire
Oceanic - Water
Panopticon - Air
In the Absence of Truth - Earth
Wavering Radiant - Light
@@neeltheother2342 Took me a while to realize you were talking about the band and not the islamic state lol
@@Sauron930 Well ISIS largely died in a fire and is now part of the earth so it's not far off lol
@neel gosh
NAILED IT.
Been quite a while since I've listened to this album but holy fuck...this shit slaps so hard. Brann is a mad man behind those drums. How the hell does he fit all those fills in there?? The guitar harmonies plus the crunchy, pummeling guitar riffs coupled with all the weird chords. Amazing. This album's sound is brutal while retaining hard rock underpinnings. I wish I had better verbage to describe this masterpiece. I'm going to be spinning this for a while, once again!
My favorite album and band of all time 🤘🏼
I've been listening to Mastodon since this album, saw them a handful of times over the years. Relapse became one of my favorite labels because of this album too.
I miss old Mastodon
I know man... Every time I listen to Emperor of Sand or Once More Round the Sun I always come back here...
Once More Round the Sun is a great album too though.
I tried listening to Emperor of Sand but didn't make it far. I miss this sound.
They're all life changing.
front to back, probably the tightest album I've listened to in my life.
Thanks headbangers ball for introducing me to March of the fire ants. Rest is history. Love this band
If Remission gets a really good remaster than humanity may understand what heaven sounds like
I was 5-6 years old when them music came out & I totally missed out. So listening now & absolutley love it 👌
This album changed my life the day I discovered this video. This album feels like if the cataclysm had a voice, it’s absolutely crushing and mind bendingly heavy. If anyone reading this ever gets the chance to listen to this album on drugs something like MDA or acid do it. It sounds like electric demons screaming at you in a badass way.
have you discovered Today is The Day - In the Eyes of God?
I miss their stuff like this
R.I.P early mastodon, you was one of the best bands of the sludge metal
well, now they myght simply be one of the best metal band in history
mastodon needs to do another heavy album for old times sake.. i love their new direction and everyones been tripping balls on it for almost a decade but they need to come back with the style like this again.. ive declared cattle decapitation as the next most popular thing because im leading normies down into a savage hole pit thing.. i need you guys to bring the noise again.. troy starring on vocals again..
getting the cover art tattooed on me!
Dont
Peta will hate ur ass
Honestly Mastodon has one of the best album covers ever!
Remission is CLASSIC *****
What got me into metal
same
~sounds like the name of a great tv show full of anecdotes by metal heads . . .
That's surprising to me. I find myself expecting most metal-heads to have started with something "lighter".
@@nickyelovich3872
Haha. I was mostly a grunge and rock kid when I was younger because that's what was on the radio. Six Feet Under - Warpath was my first "real metal" experience. Now I'm addicted to heavy stuff. Soulfly, Cavelera Conspiracy, Mastadon, Six Feet Under, etc. Still lots of melody, but heavy as hell.
Oh yeah, also Stemage is another good one. Talk about unknown and underrated.
Same
Mastodon continues to surprise me with how great they are. Thanks for sharing this. Awesome album!
miss this mastodon
The audio's quality is awesome! I didn't hear the bass so clearly before on these tracks!!
Call of the Mastodon
Remission
Leviathan
Blood mountain
Crack the sky
Masterpieces!
Elephant Man is alongside with planet caravan and too much alcohol the acoustic one the most real brutal and hauntingly beautifull pieces of music i`ve ever heard
When I hear this song, it John fucking Hurts...
The bass on this album is killer.
The more songs I hear from them, the more I adore them... Definetly in my Top 3 of all bands already; just love it, no matter what they do, they do it with passion and skill and each time, it is the utmost joy to listen to them once again.
I can't pick a favorite Mastodon album. But right now, this is my favorite.
That's because the best Mastodon song is the one the you just switched to. My brothers and I have already discussed this.
I love their new stuff as well but DAMN this album is fantastic.
Best band ever. I love Tool, Gojira, but these guys are the best.
happy 18th anniversary for this fuckin' album
Gotta love Mastodon albums, they start off with a punch in the face and end with a lullaby.
Remission - Fire🔥
Leviathan - Water💧
Blood Mountain - Earth🌍
Crack The Skye - Aether🌫
The Hunter - Wood🌴
Once More Round The Sun - Life🌞
Emperor Of Sand - Time⏳
They are Elemental
Ele-Mental
Well then
Hushed and grim - Death
This is kinda accurate,I like it
This will knock the dust off your soul for sure 👍
their best album
What a fucking band
Definitely one of my top metal albums ever.
In no particular order:
Mastodon, Remission
Mastodon, Leviathan
Gojira, Magma
Gojira, The Way of All Flesh
Gojira, From Mars to Sirius
Megadeth, Rust in Peace
Pantera, Far Beyond Driven
Pantera, Vulgar Display of Power
You can definitely tell that this represents the element of fire.
masterpiece album. epic. cheers
These are not merely songs. These are musical compositions that rival anything.
this and Leviathan are their best albums
I would add Blood Mountain in there to. That album has the best of both worlds of the Mastodon Eras. Crack the Skye on the other hand is an Ehh for me but an Ehh for a Mastodon album is still fucking great.
Crusher Destroys goes hard as all hell!
that white noise in the end of the album. Kicks you right back in reality (whatever this is)
soo crushingly heavyyy
This is amazing :o
pure, uncompromising, Masterpiece of Metal!
Lesson of Metal ☠ burning inside. Broken the wall ☠
Timeless album! My kids will listen to this.
Make Mastodon Metal Again
Fuckin amazing record. The Mastodon of old. Glad this sound is in the past though. What they've become is something truly special. With as many records they've put out after ditching the sludgy sound, you'd think people would learn to stop bitching and accept they don't wanna blow people's fucking ears out anymore.
Wow. Someone understands musical growth. Mastodon has gently slid into the music they now play with an ease that Metallica never found, and Megadeth wasn't capable of doing.
Unstoppable masterpiece
my fav album is round the sun but I love this one too dont come for meee
The other Mastodon Album I need to get on vinyl !
Remission is epicly classic!
this is a little different from the new songs they make now
