Peter kariuki. There are rules from the colonial time you can't sell your own coffee directly unless you have certain number of coffee trees i think around 10000 trees which many farmers dont have. Its an industry controlled by cartels who oppress the small farmers

Let us give the true picture, politics has a way of comparing apples and pawpaws. At 109ksh farmgate, the farmer is essentially making 109*6.5=708 for the green bean sold at auction, and 708*1.12=850 for the roasted coffee kg. Thus Thuo selling @ 2000 means 43% of his sales price went to the farmer. remember , there is a cooperative that processed the coffee, this one took 177sh . (9%)milling and marketing in auction 56sh (3%), this leaves Thuo With 45% for the cost and profit of his business. which means the farmer if efficient (scientific cost of 50 per kg makes 45% net margin) just from farming while the roaster has a max margin of 45% assuming no cost which is unrealistic. lets look at margin and costs not just arbitrary figures. again a well fed pawpaw from the same tree and an emaciated pawpaw do not taste the same.
