Have you thought of building yourself a ""Hoverboard"" for your excavator. There really handy especially if you've got a big property. The king of obsolete here on TH-cam knocked one together using scrap parts. All you need is an Axle either a trailer or a real car/truck axle & some half decent size box or C channel then all you need to do is drive the excavator up onto the axle and the bucket either sits in the truck bed as long as your not pickie about damaging the truck bed or put a receiver on the back of the bucket either way you don't need me to tell you how to design 1 just saying as it would make a great video and be invaluable to you .

I was an electrical technician in the steel industry for forty years. During my early years we had a class taught by 3M about their different products and all of us were using them wrong, especially the plastic electrical tape. In order to keep it from unwinding you need to wrap it in this order. Wrap the tape sticky side down, ie against the work. At the end of the initial wrap, without cutting the tape, twist the tape to where the sticky side is up. Wrap the tape back down the splice with the sticky side up. Then when reaching the end of the wrap, twist the tape with the sticky side down and wrap the splice again stopping when the tape reaches the end of the sticky side up portion. The object being not to leave a piece of the tape sorta flying in the wind. To double check this method , just simply stick two pieces of the tape together, then try and take them back apart. It actually vulcanizes itself together. Hope this helps in the future. P.S. I really proves itself in greasy applications.

I don't see how this helps at all - now you have a layer of tape that's shiny side to shiny side in the middle of the tape layers - just perfect for water to get in there and sit.
When you pull the hubs off take the outside bearing out and put the nut back on enough so it will stay, then pull the hub off and it will knock the bearing out with the seal without damaging it. Then just clean the seal and any numbers can be seen.
I use that same technique on everything that uses a tapered roller bearing 👍

Great videos as usual. I think i have that same brake controller. The reason it behaves different while stationary, is it has an accelerometer in it, and it uses that to add proportional braking (voltage) when moving. When you are parked, there is no deceleration so it only applies minimal braking. Whereas the manual override button applies the full braking/voltage.
the constant power terminal is to charge an onboard battery on the trailer in case the breakaway switch is activated. if you have a breakaway switch then you need an onboard battery on the trailer
You can also use it to run some small items like lights on switches etc… but yeah pretty much.

Awesome video as always! Little trick to stop electrical tape unwinding, you can carefully melt the end to the underlying tape with the side of a soldering iron. Don't use the end, it's too hot and you'll melt right through! Hope that's useful
If you don't have your soldering iron handy, I bet a knife/screwdriver and a lighter will work too.
I've been told (during my electromechanic-educution) to strech the tape to double the length it is on the roll, before applying it.
This activates the tape so it sticks together.
It is not supposed to stick together on the roll, you know...
This might be correct... but not recommended with Cheap electrical tape 😉

Soldering trailer connections, pretty impressive. We usually used butt splices loaded with noalox, then heat shrink over that, or the heat shrink built in butt splices.
Just appying brake pedal wont engage trailer brakes unless it's an older time delay brake controller. Most modern controllers have an accelerometer that progressively applies voltage the harder the vehicle is stopping. The manual override switch you used applies the max voltage allowed per your gain setting.
To prevent the green crud of death a bit of vaseline or dialectic silicone in your connections is always a good practice.
Seeing you using your brain to problem solve and repair instead of throwing your wallet at a problem is always awesome to watch for me. Keep up the good work.
To stop your gravel from being pressed down in the mud first lay down 1-2 layers of heavy duty driveway fabric as a base.👍
To repack bearings with grease with a lot less mess, put the bearing in a plastic bag with the grease and work the grease into the bearing inside the plastic bag.
Informative video as always. Old fashioned self amalgamating tape is still available in the UK and I use it on vintage cars to good effect. Years ago wheel hub and brake drum were interchangeable. Old dinosaurs tend to remember these things but not where I last put the screwdriver! Thank you for posting. Best wishes from the UK.
one of the things i end up doing a lot of at my shop is trailer wiring. i ended up spending far too much time chasing broken wires and bad grounds on the last trailer i worked on. i told him next time he brings his trailer over, bring a spool of the trailer wire, and ill build a whole new harness for it. he needed it back before the weekend was over so he could go to work monday with it, so i ended up having to cobble the damaged harness back together, and it pained me every step of the way haha! when i do wiring, i need to do it all properly. cheers John, glad you got your trailer all fixed up!

If you start packing grease in your palm with a clean bearing and just a dab, it makes it easier to see that the grease has squeezed into the bearing race thoroughly. Then you can slobber the outside to your heart’s content.

I rent and work on trailers on a daily basis. I learned from a co-worker 40 years ago that 90% of the time the ground is the issue on 12V systems. The other 10% is a bad wire, bad bulb, or a fuse. That tidbit has served me well and still holds true on the trailers I see today. A ground will get you almost every time and make you go bald scratching your head why does it work here and not there, now and not now, as in what you ran into. Glad you coated your connections with some sort of dielectric grease, it really helps in the long run. When I rivet a clearance light to a trailer, I coat the rivets with dielectric grease to clean corrosion on the back side where I can't reach to clean the surface.
I think you were checking ground against the license plate bolt. Most license plate bolts thread into a plastic insert in the metal bumper insulating it. Great video as always.
One more thing we learned, that tape is not designed to stretch. It will always try to go back to its original size. When putting it sticky side to sticky side, by putting a slight tension on the outer wrap it does help with the adhesion.

I have found with electric trailer brakes, unless they are basically brand new, the vibration of the trailer going down the road is a key component in getting them to grab/release reliably. Up on blocks even with all the parts in excellent condition, they sometimes don't want to engage or continue to drag a little after the power is removed. a rap on the trailer frame and everything works like normal.

Heat/sun damage. Can be from overload, under inflation, or just solar heating.
In Canada, all trailers require an emergency brake applicator which consists of a small lead acid battery on the trailer and a breakaway switch that must be connected to the truck body via a small cable. If the trailer hitch comes loose, the cable trips a switch that applies the trailer brakes using the onboard battery. The power output charges the onboard trailer battery. Of course, with an RV, it also charges the onboard RV battery via the 12v output in the plug.
I was always told that you back your nut off the bearing so that it has room to expand when it heats up.

It seems your trailer tires disintegrate before they wear out. Maybe covering them against sun and weather when not in use will make them last longer? 🤔

You can remove the outer bearing, screw the spindle nut on a couple of turns and use the inner bearing to pop the seal off without damaging it!

I would really like to see those OptiVolt panels being shaded across the length rather than across the width. I doubt you'll see half output and likely way way lower.

When you said "trailer tires", i knew it was going to hurt. Even the little ones are expensive! I have a 9X5 and an 18 foot one. Both need new wood right now. And the brake wire on the big one got pinched between the wood snd frame, so my controller was flashing "OL" for a bit. Always something!

Jon, on watching your 7000 lb trailer overhaul i note a fairly large hole in the bed at the 5:27 sec point. A lot of bed rot is also evident. With the heavy loads you put on that deck i would worry about a wheel popping through. Looks like its past time to harvest some of that white oak and prevent a worse problem. My friend is a state arborist and he suggests using red oak if you have a surplus of it as it is nearly as good as using white oak. The difference in durability is very minor (5-6% at most). Using either of them should give you a deck good for over 40 years.

while you were greasing the wheel bearing, I noticed that you have Craftsman creeper on the ground, please always stand up your creeper when you are not using.
I feel your pain within 3 years I had to replace my trailer tires. My tire guy calls them China Bombs. My flatbed tires lost tread & belts, all 4 had to be replaced. I found out that all Trailer tires are now made in China, except for Goodyear. So I switch to Goodyear, I am very happy so far, the trailer seems to ride better with less sway.

Harbor freight and northern tools used to sell a grease packer for bearings you could use with your grease gun to avoid most of the hand mess. I never had enough bearings to grease to justify owning and cleaning one up after greasing bearings to be installed.
If the concrete doesn’t work , maybe try recyceld rubber from shredded tirers. It looks like gravel.😉

Over here all trailers over 750kg gross have to have brakes and automatic break away application built in so I am surprised yours doesn't have something similar.
I'll admit to not a fan of using power to apply the trailer brakes; mechanical overrun works up to 3500kg ( over this coupled brakes are required ). The best coupled brake systems use compressed air acting against a springs to keep the brakes off so breakaway or airline failure applies them automatically.
BTW, given the way the electric brakes work, does the trailer have a parking brake ?
Always rebar concrete. Whether it is just some nylon rope placed in at halftime of the pour through to wire mesh, or the cool plastic rebar you just pour into the mixer. But concrete always wants to tear.
€€€€€€ if you ever have to pour a pad like that, I took an old gate that was not in the best of shape, and used it as rebar. Words for thought we’re both farmers we both deal with the same shit life throws at us

There is an Electrical spray for contacts that might help in keeping contacts. Looks like you need to get some oak sawn boards from a sawmill to relay the deck. Oak lasts much longer than pine or fir.

The way to stop black electrical tape from unravelling is to cut it with scissors instead of tearing it off. I discovered this by accident a few years ago. It seems that when you stretch it to tear it, it damages the glue
I was thinking maybe when you tested the continuity in the plug receptacle , that you were using the license plate screw for ground. A lot of license plate screws have plastic inserts they screw into, and you wouldn't have a ground ! Just sayin 😊 great video , we always learn something, like feeling like a bicycle! Lol 😆

I prefer to use crimp and seal butt connectors, wire loom wrapped in Super 88 tape, and self drillings screws holding P clips to the frame. Especially in the terrain you take your trailer, keeping the trailer brake wires up and out of the way is a huge deal for longevity of the brake wiring.

Maybe think about covering up the tires with some white cloth or tarp to prevent uv damage from direct sunlight hitting them.
I just usually use a tiny tie-wrap on electrical tape. Will hold forever...or until it comes off. Lasts longer than a loose tape end.

As an aircraft mechanic most of my life I have learned with electrical issues, 90% of the time you can trace it down to a bad connection or crappy grounds. Removing and installing connectors is great way to uncover intermittent or high resistance in the connections. As a troubleshooting rule start at "bad connections". I love your videos and all of the various skills you have. Looking forward to your next venture
Tire on my Winnie blew out like that this past summer.
I had the replacements already but have been like a bicycle and didnt swap them till one blew. :)
Did the other 6 but didnt bother with the tag axle until it blew.
My father and I have had a handful of those trucks between us, each one of them had the factory trailer plug go bad and had to be replaced. The pins would get loose and then not make good connection. I would get the trailer plug with a pigtail and then wire it directly into the truck harness and do away with the factory connector.
Some BW-100 spray on those contacts to clean em up would have been a nice option too.
The power is to charge a battery or provide power to any 12volt lights or such on trailer. Get rid of the Meter and use a test light that loads the circuit while testing. Dielectric grease is needed in the terminals.

Good evening Mr John. The concrete is ok, however try to never have small stones around where the cows frequent. I had a calf once that got a pebble in its hoof and I got off a lol lucky. Vet didn't hurt me to bad.
Suggest you slide some heat shrink tubing over your soldered wires.
Congrats FC101, on finally figure-out that the ground wire was bad, fixed-it and new tires/grease the bearings and good to go..

Okay, one more suggestion. The connection to the wiring on the vehicle side of the bumper plug should have DE-OX put on it also. I know I’m being picky.
The voice of John is really soothing for me. Does someone know if there are channels that "read" things (like audiobooks, articles, etc...) or do long interviews with similar voices? It would be great to have them in the background when doing stuff.
Of course I do it also with this channel but the occasional loud noise from the "crafting" may interrupt the mood.

That liquid tape stuff is a PITA, if you've never used proper splicing tape try something like 3M 2155, it's self adhesive, waterproof, and relatively cheap... last roll I purchased was maybe $4. It lasts nearly forever in a toolbox and has no sticky adhesive to goop everything when it gets hot, and once it sticks to itself for a few minutes it's permanent. The only trick is that you have to stretch it as you apply it and it can be somewhat easy to break if you pull too hard, so be gentle.

greasing the moving parts in break is good for 3-4 weeks, till dust and other staff collect there. is better to leave them dry
Well, about the tires; I know this here in Europe from 'retreaded' tires (new tread). These react very sensitively to overloading when the air pressure is too low. This heats up the carcass and the vulcanization loosens.
I love the Astro grip gloves. They're my favorite gloves that i use all the time. I just wish they made them in XXL 😬
Dirty contacts. Bulldozer on trailer may have caused tyre delamination.
I use water spray on brakes then wd40.
Nice presentation . Good area for repairs that's so important.
Always check the ground and power with a high wattage test light, it eliminate loose connections

Your brake controller works on a pendulum to apply the brakes. It senses the inertia of the truck when you apply the brakes and then sends power to the trailer.

Put the liquid over the vinyl electrical tape. Or use the vinyl and coat with 3M Scotchkote Electrical Coating. The 3M Scotchkote is what we use for Naval ship work.
I was waiting for you to break out a “Mud Mixer” like all the other concrete related vids I see.

At 34:54 it seems that either the repair on the dozer was after that footage was filmed or there is still a lot of play where the idler wheel sits, or how ever you'd call that.
There used to be a liquid called Stabil, no NOT. the gas stuff that when applied to mechanical electrical connections achieved the near equivalent of a soldered connection. It’s an electrical polymer that does not cross talk even if you spill it over between electrical connections up to 600 v What we used was manufactured in Sweden I believe. It may now be called stabilant. Search for electrical mechanical connection enhancer it’s a liquid should be small squeeze type dropper bottle it goes a long way but it looks like they are VERY PROUD of it. .

31:00 inertia based braking. those controllers make for a real smooth braking action. (horses approved). not sure how old that one is, but on my tekonsha controller there is a setting for the minimum braking power, then another setting for how much rampup there is (based on how big a load you are towing)
