I’m pretty sure this is what we shot on in high school photography class! We had a lil darkroom in the basement of our school, I miss it so much!
I haven't tried HP 5 yet, I will eventually. So far I have never had a bad experience with any of the other Ilford films. Ilford is quality company.
You have the best channel! Finally, a serious film review channel that isn't just lo-fi hip-hop and photowalks.

HP5+ is without a doubt my favorite film. If I had to pick one film for the rest of my life it would be this. I routinely push it 2 stops and love the results. Such a versatile film.

Bought a bulk loader, reloadable cannisters and 100ft of hp5 plus. Even tho I got like 4 rolls of 36exp of hp5 plus and 2 rolls of 36exp kentmere pan 400.
Recently got back into shooting film and this was the film I used for film photography class in my community college and its became my favorite black and white film. lol

Like literally. I honestly needed to change from colored to black and white. I paid $26.26 cents just to have three rolls of FujiFilm C200. Now it went up to $29.95 cents. The Iford 400 is 24.99 cents. I definitely need an alternative film that I could buy that come into three rolls that is a decent amount of money without it being overpriced.
In the actual store. I have been watching it over two weeks. It is still not in the store. Not even to the next Walmart where I’m at. The next Walmart I’m at is forty five minutes away. Yes I use instant film, but I honestly believe that 35mm film is more reliable for a daily use than instant film. Just for the 400 iso for FujiFilm is like sixty dollars. That’s why I need an alternative film from colored without getting expired film.
We have this waterproof Eumig Nautica too. My father bought it new and used it only once 40 years ago.
This in now my goto film since Kodak fizzled! I have a 100 ft of HP5 roll on hand.
There are industrial sources for O ring materials by the foot so you can cut the length and glue together for custom applications. Or just get the size bigger and cut to size. Not as good as the proper size but do able.
HP5 Plus is my go to B&W film. It is flatter and less contrasty than other 400 B&W's. But scanned images can be adjusted with levels. Shadows don't fall off hard as hard as Tri-X and TMax.
I love HP5 in the Early 80s I was bulk rolling it and processing it and occasionally FP4 that’s all I ever used having come back to film photography again I have some in the fridge looking forward to using it again
Thank you for your presentation. Ilford should be supported by all possible means. When Kodak ( of all people ) and Fuji ( not worth bothering with any longer ) totally abandoned film photography all together and went ' Digital ', Ilford was the only company who stuck by the analogue photographers and produced full range of films in all formats, printing papers and the chemicals to go with them. Ilford is also the producer ( they really do produce films unlike ADOX that buys leftover stocks of whatever is available and rebrands them ) of a lot of very high quality films for other people . HP5+ is an outstanding film particularly in 120 and large format and can have different looks with different developers. Ilford also ( as rumour has it ) produces the Acros 100 II for Fuji and along with its subsidiary Harman is responsible for producing a large range of high quality affordable films such as Kentmere and the new Agfa-Photo APX ( Different from the old defunct Agfa-Gevaert version ). Now Kodak has started to reproduce some BW emulsions at crazy prices , no doubt prompted by the so called film revival. Talk about being opportunistic and money grabbing.
Do take note that Kentmere films are made on a separate batch in Harman Technology, so they're not rebranded Ilford stock. Regardless of that, Kentmere films are not a slouch, and can go toe-to-toe with their bigger cousins when shot at box speed. Finally a correction: Harman Technology is not the subsidiary, rather it is the maker and owner of both Ilford and Kentmere brands.
ADOX actually makes its own emulsion and chemistry. Mirko Böddecker, the founder and owner, is a friend of mine, and I had the chance in 2018 to visit the factory in Bad Saarow, Germany while I was living there. It is, nonetheless correct, that most of their initial products were improvements of AGFA and older ORWO products - but nowadays many of their products are self-developed and/or co-developed.
More on ADOX: they also have a coating factory in Marly FR, Switzerland, on the facilities of what was previously Ilford Switzerland S.A.
The company that "buys leftover stocks of whatever is available and rebrands them" is Maco Direct and Lomography - the latter (for instance) buys ORWO UN54 and N75 film and repackages them as Potsdam and Berlin B&W film. ORWO, by the way, or its spiritual successor FilmoTec GmbH, is located in Wolfen, Germany, just a few kilometers from my own place in Dessau; ORWO meant "Original Wolfen" as a rebrand of the AGFA branch then located in GDR/East Germany.
At one time, the Yellow Father (Kodak) was the only company whose photographic products I would consider. But time and again, Kodak stabbed photographers in the back by raising prices and dropping products. Now, I won't buy anything from that company. Ilford all the way.
HP5. Long & Highly Anticipated.
I am just getting back into film but 40 years ago, I always thought Ilford was the best B&W. HP4 if you can stand the lower film speed.
I really like film by Ilford! Unfortunately most of my failings with loading film happened with Ilford :(
But I just got a roll of Delta 3200 back and I am pretty happy with the results :) A roll of HP5 is loaded in my G-III at the moment!

My favourite black and white film of all time. I started using it when it was just HP5, before it got the plus. My favourite colour film was Kodachrome. I don't shoot colour any more.
Tri-X 400 ASA has a slightly darker grain.
Hey, Noah. What are your thoughts about Tri-x compared to T-Max? They seem a bit simmilar to me, but that might be because I'm not very familiar with B&W film.
Just shot the two back to back in my Mamiya 645. Two totally different films. On medium format T-Max even in 400 ISO rivals digital in detail and noise IMO. It is also less contrasty and has more latitude. Tri-X has a great look though if the gritty look is what you are going for. That being said you can push HP5+ and get a similar look.
The suggested pronunciation for "Eumig" was "OY-mig," according to a long-ago photography magazine's pronunciation guide. "Tzseiss-Eeikon," "NIH-Kone," "Roll-Eye," "Fawcett-lander,"and so on. I bought a roll of that film and shot it in Norway about 5 years ago. After shooting it up I did keep it out of the refrigerator for over a year before getting it developed in Brazil. The picture quality was very ugly, the worst possible, I'd say. That makes me think that, in spite of the bad storaging, the person who developed it used chemicals for color film, but I can't say 100% for sure.
