  • A video showing the process we use to modify the beyerdynamic DT990 here at custom cans. There are probably some useful tips if you are looking to mod your own DT990s
    we now have a kit with the foam and weights available here
    customcans.co....
    Or if you want some ready modded DT990 check out the link below
    If you fancy buying some of our modified beyerdynamic headphones check out the link below
    customcans.co....
    We now also offer a send in service
    customcans.co....
    or if you want to buy the bits your self we used
    Bitumin car sound deadening sheets for the bar across the middle
    6mm adhesive lead for the back of the driver and 4.5mm for around the outside.
    the socket used was a REAN RT3MP or if you are looking to go balanced the RT4MP would be the way to go
    For wire - you can use whatever you have to hand or the original wire that was already in there but I would recommend no smaller than 26AWG and no larger than 20AWG for the best results

    I recently got DT 770 Pro 250ohm version. And the wire for the right earcup was angled weirdly which was driving me crazy (OCD probably!). I wanted the wires to be beautifully symmetrical on both sides of the headphones!.
    At 18:29 you removed one earcup, rotated it once and screwed it back in order to get the wire to follow the same curve as the other side. This was what I was looking for. It took me less than 2 minutes to do the same thing and now my headphones look perfectly symmetrical too!
    Thank you so much for showing it (even though it's a minor detail and 99% of people won't even bother), this video was highly useful to me!
    Your channel is a godsend for all Beyerdynamic headphone owners. I don't know why Beyerdynamic doesn't bother putting a detachable cable themselves. It's such a low hanging fruit. So many potential DT 770 pro buyers go with ATH M50x just because of the detachable cable!

    Nice video, I did this to my cans with a slight modification I used balanced jack, since mine are 250 ohms and I want to use them with a powered portable amp.
    If you use Canon ITT Mini XLR: M-XL-3-14, and bevel around the mating surface where the jack screws into the cup you can get a flush mounted jack, instead of the slight protrusion like I see when people use the Rean mini-xlr jacks.
    It’s only about .5 mm of extra material removed and if supported with hot glue it will be solid.

    @HossamBindary 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    love your work but idk why would u make it heavier does it make it sound better or is it just a preference thing ?

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The weight is added to the driver enclosure . Essentially it gives a bit more mass for the diaphragm to push against. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so as the diaphragm is moved in an out, the enclosure tries to move and flex the baffle. Adding more weight in the right places means that the enclosure is harder to move so more of the energy goes into making sound, especially in the sub bass region where the diaphragm has to move a lot.
      So... the mass loading helps the driver recreate the very low frequencies more accurately with less harmonic distortion.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can leave out the foam to make them fully open but the foam helps reduce the peak in the treble. As they are pretty open any way and they have velour pads you don't get much isolation to begin with and I don't think this mod reduces it any further

    So basically, the DT770 and DT990 use the same drivers, but they are configured differently internally. DT770 has sort of a ring around the driver that bridges to the back and closes it off similarly to any other closed headphone... MDR7506, ATH-M40X, etc. The DT990 doesn't have that tube piece inside, but has the vents, which are dampened a bit to tune the sound.... so what happens if I 3D print a new cup, that has vents on the back, stick some DT880 dampening foam in the back of that, and install it on a DT770 without the internal tube piece?... I would essentially have an intermediate between the 990 and 770 headphones. Maybe I can get the cleaner bass of the 990s and the cleaner treble of the 770s into one headphone.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would probably not be that easy - there are so many things that effect the sound... it would be possible but would probably take a lot of testing and tuning to get them to sound the way you want

    • @ulfrinn8783
      @ulfrinn8783 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could run the 250 ohm off a PC or phone temporarily if you are going to get an amp in the future - They won't go super loud and you will lack a bit of control in the bass but I use 250 ohm headphones straight out of phones and laptops all the time.

      That is a tricky question to answer. A lot of people are convinced there can be no difference in sound between cables. I think I, personally, can hear a difference and if you check our feedback, a lot of customers are really impressed with the sound quality improvement but that may all be Placebo. I can say for certain that they will have a lower capacitance, inductance and impedance than the stock cables as well as being more flexible and less microphonic.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adding weight to the back of the driver. As the diaphragm moves in and out, some of the energy goes into moving the the rest of the driver assembly in the opposite direction. Adding weight makes it harder to move so more of that energy goes into making sound rather then wabbling other areas of the headphones. Generally it seems to improve the clarity and extension of the bass
