This and Mineshaft II are absolute masterpieces, lyrically. It's so rare to listen to a song with such compelling imagery. The symbol of good advice (angel on the shoulder) is injured, vulnerable and preyed upon. Alcohol doesn't dull the pain. Acting the doctor, fixing other peoples' problems, only for them to leave after they're better. Attempting to get her own motivation back on track takes too much out of her and she ends up causing more damage. Attracted to people with problems, so the cycle restarts.
As someone who listened to Mineshaft II before Mineshaft I and had a biased liking of Mineshaft II, I have to say Mineshaft I is easily better than Mineshaft II. Your first sentence should include Mineshaft I.
this is one of those songs that i love because it is beautiful on the surface (the way she sings, the sound of the music otherwise) but is just as interesting in the meanings (*what* she sings and what is symbolizes)
Just saw Dessa perform. With her peeps.. "Doomtree". Amazing in Madison, Wi. Now i am spreading out and listening to her other songs. I think she is very inspiring and a wonderful performer. Hands down!
I remember sometime about two/three years ago, I was listening to NPR and they were interviewing Dessa, and she seemed incredibly uncomfortable with being interviewed, but then she started singing and everyone in the room with me went dead silent, just listening to her beautiful song...
I'm not sure I'd want a steady diet of that, but, damn that gets your attention. Love the drone, love the *words*.... I've figured something out, too. I don't like *guys* rap, for the most part. It's like rock, it's a dream, it's what they wanna do but *can't*. When girls rap, the sh*t gets *real*. Thank you. I needed that.
it's a strange breed A different kind of creature That looks for love through the eye of a needle But the creed of the seamstress is That you're pretty in pieces Best lyric in the whole song!!!! #mindblown#
Agreed. Dessa is entirely unique. Lyrically, the closest I've found to her is 1 specific album by Alanis Morissette: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998). That album is very mystical, deep, dark, and poignant, just like Dessa's lyrics.
Personally, I know she has everything it takes to make it, but like most artists it comes down to marketing. I grew up in the south and do favor the dirty dirty but when I moved to MSP it totally changed my mind as far as music goes as a whole. There are tons of great bands that never make it out of the cities but when it comes to hip hop which I grew up to in MIA, the conscious rap is not recognized like it is in the Midwest. Her album is sick and she has a ton of upside through her creativity.
I agree. I dont know why anyone who listens to the gibberish that young money spews would be listening to dessa, but whatever. . maybe dessa can save their souls.
If she used her beauty along with her creativity/flow/style she would easily be selling more albums. Granted you can't really judge a person by their album sales these days but she would def spark interest in people that aren't that typical hip hop fans and much like Dido use that to get noticed. Add the looks and her ability to rap/sing to mainstream where people are vain(majority of Americans) and she would blow up! I like atmosphere but when I suggested him to friends in the south, No Go.
Am I the only one who finds it humourous that people keep writing, 'Stop comparing her to Nicki! You are so stupid for keeping on comparing them!', even though nobody in the comments have been comparing them for over a month?
are people really comparing dessa to kicki?!...what the hell? 0.o nicki minaj isent a female rapper anymore probly never was....but dessa is a lyrical assasin!!
Love Dessa- Beekeeper. Curious, why are people comparing her to Nicki Minaj?? They are both making totally different types of music. Both different but both good in their own way.Cut the hate and just appreciate. #YaHear lol
Just wanted to clarify atmosphere is solid, but for lack of knowledge in the majority of the hip hop industry they take a back seat. I love the hip hop scene in MSP, unique like no other(Heiruspecs), but most hip hop fans want to hear about struggle and coming up from the gutter(at least that's what we called it) and runnin it. I feel for all the great artist I've seen/met in MSP but if u truly love what u do it doesn't matter what mainstream(followers) like. Probably why there's Paisley Park!
Dessa in concerto in Puglia. Dove? #sceglitulive è il contest di Liolà Eventi che ti invita a votare la location del suo prossimo concerto! www.pugliaspettacoliedeventi.com/2015/02/dessa-sara-la-seconda-protagonista-del.html#.VOsz5nyG_54
What is this nonsense about Dessa being compared to Nicki Minaj? Uh they do two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT styles of rap. Just because they are both lyricists doesn't mean you can compare them...
I want Dessa to stay underground. This imaginary Ven Diagram between Dessa and Nicki can be fuckin tossed out. The only similarities if there are any is that they both have vaginas and make music. I don't want to see Dessa on TV, I want to see her and Doomtree at a small venue!!! I know it's frustrating cause Dessa is undeniably a better artist so it's like, "Where's the recognition?", but honestly it's all right here.
Could maybe compare her to adelle but honestly not even. dessa is one of my favorite female artists. hell I dont think female even needs thrown in that sentence.
anyone else here because of homestuck? ... ... ... ... ... ... ... no...just me? ok I'll go home now *walks over to a trash can and jumps inside of it*
i wish she was more famous. this should be on every radio.

lyrical genius... just amazing.. she is smooth on her approach and just unreal beats behind it. perfection... this is poetry
Not only is she beautiful, but with every word she speaks the beauty of her mind becomes shows more and more. I love her words.
DTR
this is one of those songs that i love because it is beautiful on the surface (the way she sings, the sound of the music otherwise) but is just as interesting in the meanings (*what* she sings and what is symbolizes)
Adaline Marie how do you understand the lyrics ? I know that your comment is old but I am always curious about others' interpretation.
the story telling and imagery alone are enough to make this great, but her voice and her attitude make it real and great.
Just saw Dessa perform. With her peeps.. "Doomtree". Amazing in Madison, Wi. Now i am spreading out and listening to her other songs. I think she is very inspiring and a wonderful performer. Hands down!
She's a singer, poet, lyricist..multi-talented...oh so talented.
Never was into hip hop but Dessa changed my point of view!
you`re not alone. she was my entry card into the whole world of twin cities hip hop
you are amazing. your lyrics are beautifully crafted and skilfully delivered. thank you for creating
Dessa makes art out of hip hop. Don't misunderstand, I've always loved hip hop, but Dessa truly take it to the next level.
Nice quality great song awesome artist
gawd damn that is a beautiful picture of her.
I remember sometime about two/three years ago, I was listening to NPR and they were interviewing Dessa, and she seemed incredibly uncomfortable with being interviewed, but then she started singing and everyone in the room with me went dead silent, just listening to her beautiful song...
When you're broken you don't know yourself, and you aren't yourself, and when you're fixed you become yourself, and you become someone else.
What would you give to live a life where nothing was wrong and nothing needed to be fixed.
Instant. Fan. Where have I been?
Check out "Call Off Your Ghost" - amazing.
I know, speechless
Dustin Clark I will
I'm not sure I'd want a steady diet of that, but, damn that gets your attention. Love the drone, love the *words*....

S. J. Tucker *wheezing because I see a musician I love on a song I love. *

Dessa, you Inspire.

intricate, excellent, genius
They are even better live. Actually they are AMAZING live
Such a good concept
I think that's part of it's charm.
I love spoken word artists
Dessa is hella sick

Dessa is far intelligent to be compared to Nicki Minaj. There's so much literature and art in her lyrics.
Am I the only one who finds it humourous that people keep writing, 'Stop comparing her to Nicki! You are so stupid for keeping on comparing them!', even though nobody in the comments have been comparing them for over a month?
ii saw thiiz liive and iitz jus so good liive

@bookishdandy Not totally similar but Saul Williams, Sage Francis and El-P are all amazing and lyrically different then the mainstream.

MARRY ME, DESSA!
i love dessa, and i'm liking this song, but honestly, it's creepy as hell.
@RespectMyYouth Totally agree. In terms of raw vocals and astonishing talent, I think she's closest to Amy Winehouse.
Stop being so good Dessa, I wanna stop listening and get some sleep....

Why does everyone say she is sooo much better than nicki minaj? By comparing Dessa to Minaj you are placing them in the same league even for a second.
Dessa in concerto in Puglia. Dove? #sceglitulive è il contest di Liolà Eventi che ti invita a votare la location del suo prossimo concerto!

Why do people compare her to Nicki Minaj/Young Money? They're nothing alike. They do really different things.
:The DJ:: hmm...what to play after this? more Doomtree.
Child hero to singing goddess-the shadow
Only chick rapper i'll listen to, and i'm a chick
Oh you.
Actually she's classified as a spoken word artist
Her and Nicki have nothing in common>.>
But I know I saw that she was doing good until the cat got her.
What is this nonsense about Dessa being compared to Nicki Minaj? Uh they do two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT styles of rap. Just because they are both lyricists doesn't mean you can compare them...

Same.
Who the fuck is Nicki Minaj? I'm too deep into real hip hop to worry about shitty pop.
You don't know who Nicki Minaj is? No wonder you listen to this chick. Haha! Just playing. But truly, Nicki is way better than this girl.
Great Quality Zewsina
