DLR l Green hydrogen for sustainable energy

- Green hydrogen is set to play an important role in the sustainable transformation of the energy supply system. Its great versatility as an energy carrier means it can be used across sector boundaries and offers great synergy potential. Eighteen DLR institutes are exploiting decades of experience to conduct research into making hydrogen widely usable. The goals are to reduce the costs of currently available methods and to explore new processes and technologies. DLR covers the entire spectrum, from fundamental principles to prototypes and from components to complete systems. This encompasses the entire process chain, from the production of green hydrogen to transport and storage, energy conversion technologies and, finally, its use in industrial processes. With a broad portfolio of technologies, DLR is realising the integration of a hydrogen system, and is thus able to optimise the entire chain in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Stationary applications in energy generation and industrial processes are being investigated, as well as mobile applications - for example in road transport, ships and aircraft - together with the cross-sectoral coupling of these technologies. System-analytical research on utilisation scenarios and on the best possible integration of hydrogen into the energy, mobility and transport systems complete the portfolio. This enables the provision of independent advice to policy-makers and society on the relevant expansion paths and of fact-based recommendations on technological research priorities. DLR is also represented in the German Hydrogen Council.
