    The latest laptop from Apple the M1 Max is a masterpiece of engineering; however, can it really be a structural engineering laptop? I go through some of the top software used by structural engineers and put the M1 Max through its pace to see if it can really be used for engineering. engineers are always on the search for the best laptop for engineering, and the need is rising for engineers to be able to design on the go. So when you search for the best portable laptop, you would be hard-pressed to go past the Apple M1 Max. Mac however is not known for their engineering software which is basically exclusively on Windows, so can the Mac keep up even when Virtual machined?

    no it's not, and in the first 25 seconds of video you showed why... if you need a virtual machine, bootcamp, etc... then mac is obviusly not the way to go, just get a windows machine, i have never ever seen a proficient structural/civil engineer use a mac, I even had a professor back in college that had a phd in structures used windows, if you are watching this video starting college or your masters, just get a good windows laptop or a light gaming laptop and you won't need anything more than install apps and use them

    Hi Brendan, thanks for posting videos regarding SE! Definitely admire your work! I am aware that price point is a huge factor when picking out a laptop, but based on so many reviews of Apple's chip, I started to think if it's now reliable to do engineering work on a Macbook (while running parallels), vs. a full fledge PC. I really like the versatility of both operating systems (I like doing creativity on the side), and I really prefer Mac hardware over PC. Would you say that the performance on the mac is now up to par with windows when it comes to engineering work?

    Glad to see videos like this.
    You can really notice the efficiency of ARM processors vs X86 even with the virtual machines - maybe we will see X86 architecture being phased out eventually as CPUs start getting throttled by electricity constraints.
    However I think the efficiency isn't just from the hardware but also the OS, windows is such a RAM hungry system.
    I'm personally halfway transitioning to Linux (KDE) for my desktop and will continue to use it on a new AM5 build (keeping a W11 Laptop as back up). Mac and Linux should definitely be an option for students and small business' - a lot more compatibility than what it was 5 years ago but I don't think we will be seeing it anytime soon for larger consultancies.

    Interresting. I've always seen the Mac platform as something for music producers, photographers, graphic designers and other creative type industries. Maybe the odd architect that refuses to use Autodesk products. I'm aware that many architects have used or still use X86 macs with bootcamp and/or parallels desktop to run the obligatory Autodesk classics such as Autocad and Revit.
    Personally I still use a generic built-it-your-self tower PC in a non-descript case that you shove under the desk. Sadly most (if not all) engineering software is made for Windows, anything really like Technosft and SCIA engineer. I feel Autodesk should port Revit to the mac, but I don't see that happening. I use some apple products (an iPhone and an iPad). I find the iPad great for my musical hobbies. The apple platform is great for that sort of things. There exists a native mac version of Autocad, but it lacks the vertical integration packages such as Civel 3D.

    Latitude Rugged 7424. If need be it can also serve as a structural element, or measuring device. Drop it from the floor of choice, time and record thud, and continue working when you eventually get back to it. Don't worry, cleanup is easy. Without restarting, dunk it in gasoline - it's rated for that. Did I mention it takes a hot swap battery format?

    • @BrendanHasty
      @BrendanHasty  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the support, typically etabs is a lateral design tool so you dont need to accurately model the slabs only need the mass within the correct range. Programs such as safe/RamConcept are better design tools for slabs. BTW a scammer message everyone it wasn't me and I have deleted the comments.
