DIY 5 Gallon Bucket Aeroponic Cloner

  • In a previous video I highlighted an aeroponic cloner, in this video I go over the process to build your own based on a 5 gallon bucket. This design has worked well for me in the past and for the same money as a prebuilt cloner you can make 5-6 of these units. Having more, smaller capacity units allows for a rotation of plants and it's easier to grow a variety of things that may need different amounts of time in the cloner.
    Items used in this build:
    Small pump(s) used with 1/2" CPVC: amzn.to/2ZL7ddA
    Large pump to use with 1/2" PVC: amzn.to/3hdxmHG
    2" collars: amzn.to/39g448v
    1 3/4" hole saw: amzn.to/32yZOzz
    Buckets and plumbing parts are best bought at local big box stores.

    If you like the content I produce and would like to help support this channel there is one really easy way and it won't cost you anything. By using one of my Amazon links below any time you begin your shopping I will get a small referral reward even if you don't buy the product listed (when an item is purchased). These little bits add up and help me to buy more garden items to make more videos!
    You can use my general amazon link (amzn.to/3qjBw6K) or check out one of the tools below. These are tools I use every day in my garden and highly recommend.
    Tree saw - this Silky Professional F180 has a comfortable grip and cuts through branches with ease. I use this for things too large for the pruners. To date there is no rust on it, I put a loop of paracord through the hole in tha handle to make it easier to hang. Link: amzn.to/35Mb77Z
    Pruners - The Felco F-2 Pruners are the choice of gardening experts everywhere. They seem to last forever, if you are a real heavy user you can buy replacement blades and make them like new again. Link: amzn.to/3qjzgMO
    Snippers - For more precise work such as cutting delicate leaves off of new starts, these Corona stainless steel snippers work great. They have a long narrow blade to get into the tight spots on your seedlings or to prune smaller plants. Link: amzn.to/2TZmk2B
    Trowel - Now this isn't really classified as a trowel but the Corona Scopp is my everyday all prupose tool that I probably use more than anything else (besides the pruners). This is not the best for digging in the soil but I don't really do much of that in my food forest. This is an excellent tool for potting, which I do a lot of. It holds a lot more than a traditional trowel and is a very well built tool. I've left it out in the rain many times and no rust. Link: amzn.to/3zRa5We
    Knife - This Morakniv knife has held up well, it stays sharp and while the blade has lost its bright color it has not rusted. I use this for opening bags of soil and cutting ropes and twine. This knife is fairly inexpensive and includes a belt holster if you prefer to carry it that way. Link: amzn.to/3d9IPbD

    Thank you so much! This is wonderful! Many years ago I lived in a high cold rain forest, in Central Mexico. We received 11' of precipitation a year, mainly in the form of drizzle. There, at 7500' altitude, it was pretty cool. We were able to root apples and plums by simply cutting the twig and sticking it in the ground. One time, a friend cut down a pear tree for firewood, in November and left the twigs on the ground. By April many of them had ROOTED! This technology makes me think of such conditions. I'm going to try it!
    Do you think it would work on mulberries?

    It would be good to put panda film on the outside so you dont have to use the white bucket then you have another bucket for another system 😀 and put the panda film on it to keep the light out on the white buckets.

    How often would you have the water on for the pump if starting to propagate (clone) some cuttings? I've heard 1 minute on / 5 minutes off, but I'm new to this. Looks nice !

    Is there a time schedule on how long you keep the water running and how often do you change the water?

    • @GardeningSolutions
      @GardeningSolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I let it run all day and night and only change the water when I do a new batch of cuttings. Some people have used timers to run it off and on throughout the day and have had good results.

      It's worth a try, I think this method is best for soft wood cuttings though. Maybe try the sandbox / sand bucket method, that has worked well for me for the harder wood like figs.

    No dome is needed? Do you have to keep the whole room that their in at a very high humidity?

    • @GardeningSolutions
      @GardeningSolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No dome required, the roots are kept wet by the sprayers and the humidity in Florida is enough to keep the leaves from drying out.

    Can you list the parts for the sprinkler head please

    • @GardeningSolutions
      @GardeningSolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you have a home improvement store nearby? Here's links for parts:
      If the small pump, you need a piece of 1/2" CPVC pipe: www.lowes.com/pd/Charlotte-Pipe-1-2-in-x-5-ft-100-PSI-CPVC-Hot-Cold-Pipe/1000957530
      The sprinkler riser adapter for CPVC is this: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-2-in-CPVC-CTS-Slip-x-FIPT-Adapter-Fitting-C4703HD12/100347927
      And a riser: www.lowes.com/pd/Orbit-1-2-in-MNPT-x-1-2-in-MNPT-Cut-Off-Riser/1063721
      I didn't see it on the Lowe's site but I know they carry it. If you want to skip the sprinkler riser and screw the head right to the end of the CPVC pipe you can use this: www.homedepot.com/p/NIBCO-1-2-in-CPVC-CTS-Slip-x-MIPT-Adapter-Fitting-C4704HD12/100048636
      I did it with the riser because I already had all the parts on hand.
      360 degree sprinkler head: www.lowes.com/pd/Orbit-10-ft-15-ft-Shrub-Head-Sprinkler/3427754
      Does this help? I can provide Amazon links but the pipe is expensive there compared to buying it locally.

      Hello, which pump are you using? If the small one, you need a piece of 1/2" CPVC pipe: www.lowes.com/pd/Charlotte-Pipe-1-2-in-x-5-ft-100-PSI-CPVC-Hot-Cold-Pipe/1000957530
      The larger one uses 1/2" PVC. In either case you will need to cut the pipe, you only need a 2-3" length.
      The sprinkler riser adapter for CPVC is this: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-2-in-CPVC-CTS-Slip-x-FIPT-Adapter-Fitting-C4703HD12/100347927
      Does this help?
