I'd say Avatar gave it a run for its money, but yes, wow did this show go some dark places. It's also the best depiction of what it was like to have and recover from amnesia. I would know firsthand. Also add to that list: Ulrich and to a lesser extent Yumi having rocky relationships with their parents. Jeremy basically getting hooked on the equivalent of drugs. Repeatedly enduring what would often be extreme trauma and torture. Heavily implied at least one person died at some point if they know that return to the past won't save them. Smuggling uranium!
To quote Ash from Alien, "You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? The perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility," very few villains come close to the terror that XANA instilled
I discovered Code Lyoko on TV, and later got to watching all the episodes on YT. There are episodes that I have rewatched dozens of time, and others that I've only watched on YT once, because they're just too scary, man. There's a lot of nightmare fuel in season 1, a fair share in season 2 as well, and to this day, seeing XANA's symbol in human eyes scares me.

X.AN.A was such a perfect villain because he was so logically driven. X.AN.A only did what was necessary to complete its goals. It had no regard for who it hurt along the way and once a plan failed he never tried it again because it ended in failure once.
Yeah, my favorite moment was when X.AN.A had to work together with the characters to get rid of a virus made to destroy him but started destroying everything. At the very end his creatures bowed to his enemies and walked away.

Also, what makes Xana unique is it realizes when it had no choice but to help. 3 times it actually helped to saved them. #1. The marabunta fiasco in which Jeremy's new monster starts targeting Alieta. Xana actually helped keep Alieta safe during they episode and let Odd have command of his monsters like a general. #2. The episode common interest which has the super computer 's battery about to fail (since Xana is still tethered to it). Xana steals the needed power source for Jeremy. And finally ... During one of it's attacks using a meteor attack on the academy Jeremy realizes he can't outsmart Xana and Alieta purposefully de virtualizes herself forcing Xana to choose between destroying the super computer and having victory but no way to get Alieta ot abandoning it's attack. In the end Xana surrenders and destroys the meteors. Jeremy even jokes "oh no don't thank me THANK XANA."

Xana may have the power of growing intelligence but his failure to understand humans was his undoing at several points. In that one episode where he created a fake reality to trick ulrich, odd and yumi ikto getting deleted permanently jeremi went to lyoko to save them and Xana could not understand why anyone would put themselves into danger to save another. This was another thing about his final defeat where the same thing happened when franz sacrificed himself to ensure Xana would be stopped forever. Xana absolutely did not see a martyr coming and didn’t plan for such a thing because he can’t understand familial love.

If you think about it, he is the most frightening and dangerous villain of all time, you would think he can only affect the virtual world and electronics, but then you see him become, in a sense organic, a black dense mist floating around, controlling people always willing to kill anyone who gets in his way, summoning half mechanical half organic monsters at will for his quest that we still don't really have an answer to. Even though in the end the super computers were shut down, is he really "dead", after all only a flip of a switch and some electricity and he's able to do so much damage with so little effort.
Some people might think he can't say anything to prove he's all that but I compiled everything XANA has said and responded with "Ugh! There he is at last." "We got a visitor Jim." "I've Got You!" "Soon I won't have anymore obstacles." "What's wrong with you? Look it's Jeremie Yumi." "Look you gotta believe me but if you have any doubts, let Ulrich and Odd transfer before you." "X.A.N.A. is that the best you can do? A cheap imitation to delay us?" "That's totally absurd X.A.N.A." "And it's not me, assuming that you claim this world is virtual. You mind telling us how you got here? We're listening XANA." "You Gave Yourself Away! Everybody knows that the real Jeremie wouldn't step foot IN the Scanner. He'd be much too frightened." "But it's not logical you see? He's much too scared to even try! I'M much too scared, if not then why haven't I already done it?" "No It's Not Logical! NO! AUUUUGH! It would be obviously a bit hard to fit the entire series into one whole movie. The producers would probably have to do maybe over a 2 hour movie or longer to try to get as much as they could into a movie, Maybe even do multiple movies.
Imagine this in a movie trailer It starts quiet with a black screen. We see some trails of light on the screen, kind of a circuitboard pattern, and soundbites of everyone from news anchors to cops to politicians reacting to all sorts of weird events As the soundbites grow increasingly panicked, the music starts up and gradually gets louder We see clips of XANA's attacks And at the end, the screen cuts to black, the music cuts out, and slowly a red eye of XANA appears on the screen

Code lyoko always reminded me of the Terminator, Zana is Skynet , Zana control over material objects is like the T1000 control over technology , and the virtualisation process is like the equivalent of sending the machines trough the teleporter back to the past , and aeileeta shutting down the towers is like John shutting down Skynet
What makes XANA scary is not any super OP powers or anything mundane, though it has that. It's XANA's unwillingness to portray itself as anything, at all, and yet still able to cause such chaos and unrest. It's the fear of it being unkown. It's the fact that it doesn't have a character, aside from it's signature trace, the logo. Hell, it's unknown what XANA means or if it's even the actual name or anything. All we know is that it appeared when the government was working on project carthage and lead to the eventual shutdown of it. It could be the Russians, it could've been the US. It could've been a wrong misclick or aliens. We know nothing about Xana's origins, aside from it's intent. And that's what makes the villain so scary. It's obscurity, unhuman nature, and yet it's power. It doesn't show up and tell you it's plan, it doesn't have an ego. It isn't thoughtful or part of any cause or goal. It just does what it is instructed to do. Chaos. A program. It's systematic. It's like Skynet. But without the fear of anything. It doesn't retaliate like a human, it doesn't try to do any extra over complicated plan or solution. It just does. It just does whatever it was initially told to do, and does it in the most cut throat way. And if one fails? He goes to the next. Cause if it failed, they'll know again.
This is too good. In fact, I used to confuse this theme with the Bowser battle in New Super Mario Bros DS, because I used to play when this show was on tv😅
This might sound weird but I actually had a dream once where xana escaped and something huge like a tornado was spilling out of the factory and I knew it was him that thing that was escaping

There is a pretty good fan-made season 5, and they're cooking a season 6. It's not as good as the original since.. well it's fan-made, it's two guys doing most of the stuff themselves instead of a studio, but it's quite remarkably well-made imo. Look up CodeLyokoBeyond. The episodes are in Portuguese; not all have been dubbed but English subtitles are available.
I've listened to this so many times I've lost count. The choir really makes it sound so much more epic. But it doesn't make sense to use a human choir for the theme of malignant AI bent on world domination and/or human annihilation.
When I was a kid i ignored the fact that Xana tried to kill multiple times the Lyoko Warriors and their schoolmates... and sometimes it succeed on doing it... Geez
I remember hearing the piano,more sad and traumatic version of xana's theme,i dont quite remember at which parts it happened but i believe it happened at the last season 3 episode,when aelita got schloofed and lyoko fell

Thanks. That's right, I used sol instead of sol sharp for the brass second note in order to combine with the strings.

What makes XANA scary is not any super OP powers or anything mundane, though it has that. It's XANA's unwillingness to portray itself as anything, at all, and yet still able to cause such chaos and unrest. It's the fear of it being unkown. It's the fact that it doesn't have a character, aside from it's signature trace, the logo. Hell, it's unknown what XANA means or if it's even the actual name or anything. All we know is that it appeared when the government was working on project carthage and lead to the eventual shutdown of it.
It could be the Russians, it could've been the US. It could've been a wrong misclick or aliens. We know nothing about Xana's origins, aside from it's intent. And that's what makes the villain so scary. It's obscurity, unhuman nature, and yet it's power.
It doesn't show up and tell you it's plan, it doesn't have an ego. It isn't thoughtful or part of any cause or goal. It just does what it is instructed to do. Chaos. A program. It's systematic. It's like Skynet. But without the fear of anything. It doesn't retaliate like a human, it doesn't try to do any extra over complicated plan or solution. It just does. It just does whatever it was initially told to do, and does it in the most cut throat way. And if one fails? He goes to the next. Cause if it failed, they'll know again.

There is a pretty good fan-made season 5, and they're cooking a season 6.
It's not as good as the original since.. well it's fan-made, it's two guys doing most of the stuff themselves instead of a studio, but it's quite remarkably well-made imo. Look up CodeLyokoBeyond.
The episodes are in Portuguese; not all have been dubbed but English subtitles are available.

I've listened to this so many times I've lost count. The choir really makes it sound so much more epic. But it doesn't make sense to use a human choir for the theme of malignant AI bent on world domination and/or human annihilation.
