Well, it took me years to believe that the grip could change my game actually instantly. After 17 pages in Mr. Hogan's book on the 5 lessons, I worked the best I could at mastering it. It changed my game, my swing was pretty good, it was my poor grip thankful to Mr. Hogan

At a golf outing at Chicago’s Ridgemore Cc I happened about a older man hitting practice balls ahead of the days play.
His ball striking was unique so I complimented him and asked him what his secret was.
He told me that when he was young he went to the Chicago Open at Tamashanter Cc and saw Ben Hogan play. Pro golf back in those days didn’t have ropes and because of cultural civility you could get close to players back then, and listen should they have something to say.
There a long par 5, not knowing the course and Hogan hit driver , 2 iron to a 600 yard hole.
His playing partner was in awe and said Mr Hogan. I have never seen a shot hit like that in my life. Hogan said nothing.
On the next tee ahead his drive, Mr Hogan quietly leaned over to the fellow pro and said”
I would never hit a shot in tournament play that I haven’t practiced thousands of times”
    Purpose, commitment , legend !

Ben Hogan and Aryton Senna were so good at their discipline we still don’t know exactly why they were so good not only good but so far ahead of the rest. They almost mythological but will be know forever in their discipline.

Back when Hogan played the PGA tour, it was sort of like how a big mini tour is now, there were not many that made much money off it. The thing for most of the players was to do fairly well get their name in the Newspapers and get a Head Pro job for the winter at some nice country club.

I don't care what they say about jack and tiger, ben hogan was the greatest player since Scottish shepherds invented this crazy game. Not just for his play but what he stood for. An uncompromising standard of excellence and dedication like no one else! Even Jack and Tiger will tell you that ben hogan owned the golf swing. Had he been half the putter they were there would be no argument. They talk about how dominant tiger was in the early 2000s, but ben hogan won 36 of 99 tournaments in a 3 year stretch. His terrible car accident shamed any of the physical pain that tiger has endured. Then he came back to win 6 more majors! Stick that man in a time capsule, give him the conditions they play under now and he'd leave the tour in ashes.

Well, now that Tiger has been in an accident and sustained similar injuries from it, time will tell what he is able to do after.

For the record. Hogan won 10 majors (of course, including the Hale America National Open of 1942) in 34 attempts thru age 40 (& beginning at age 21). Nicklaus won 18 majors in 79 attempts (including his Masters win at age 46) thru age 40. Woods won 15 majors in 71 attempts (including his masters win at age 43) thru age 40. Hogan win % .294. Nicklaus win % .228. Woods win % .211. This is a fair & accurate record of their performance in "modern" majors which is the thing most media people & golf fans are obsessed about when it comes to evaluating the greatest golfers. Bare in mind that all the modern majors were not equaly available to players during the entire history of the game. Before the 1960s Americans rarely played in the British Open and the first year of the Masters was not until 1934. During WW2 there were only 2 majors (both PGAs) played between 1943 & 1945. Hogan played in only one Britsh Open (which he won) & never played in all 4 majors in any year.

There’s a case to be made Hogan was the best golfer. He played in only 58 majors…Tiger 90, Jack 164. People dont seem to factor that in.

One big difference between golf eras of Ben's time and today: Back then they played to feed their family, today many golfers are already financially endowed. All the Fed Ex Cup hype has little meaning to me. Many of these guys don't need the cash.

Justin Welch there's a great book about Hogan. It's a biography with a pic of him in black and white on the cover wearing a cap and tossing and a ball . It's a great read. The mans determination was way ahead of the pro golfer in those days. It's talks about his head strong mother and the day he followed his father into a room without his father seeing him . It was there his father shot himself. Laying there dying he looked up to Ben (aged 9 at the time) and he reportedly said. "I wish I hadn't done it now son!" Maybe that incident drove Hogan. If you like Hogan, try and get the book.

We can all sit around and have a round table debate over who is golfs greatest champion. What is not up for debate is that Ben Hogan is the greatest ball striker that ever lived. PERIOD. PERIOD!!! Even Jack Nicklaus called Hogan the games greatest shot maker. If he competed now he would obsolete every stat for greens in regulation. Watching a video recently I discovered that during Hogans break through season in 1940, he won three tournaments in three weeks. During that stretch he missed two greens in 216 holes! That is the most ridiculous golf stat I've ever heard. If you hit 75 percent of the greens in regulation today you are leading that statistical category. Hogan hit 99 percent of the greens in that stretch! There is no shotmaker ever that can make that claim. Not Nelson, Snead or a latter day ball striking genius, Lee Trevino. As his contemporary Claude Harmon observed, "If Hogan could have putted. Jesus, he would have made ever record in the book look silly." On at least two occasions head to head against his greatest rival Sam Snead, Hogan hit all 18 greens. Probably more often than that. His playoff against Snead for the 1954 Masters and his victory over Snead in the Shells World of Golf were two such instances. Watch any of the greatest players now, including Tiger and they look like hacks next to the great Hogan. Just as when everyone lauds Tiger for his incredible recovery shots. Because he hit to places Hogan would never have visited! Supposedly, according to that Hogan video, Jack was asked if he thought Tiger was better than Hogan. "No, no. Hogan easily," he said. Nicklaus was in enough awe of Hogan to watch him hit balls. Once while on a practice ground Hogan stopped hitting. Everyone applauded! Can anyone who ever played make that claim? The ultimate example of dedication and determination in an athlete. As the great writer Al Barkow observed, "Hogan didnt just play golf. He was Absolute Golf. The ultimate corporeal manifestation of an idea." Nuff said.
