In my opinion this is the best mix of realism and playability of any operational-level game, ever. And also excellent replay ability, there were plenty of options for each side to try. In particular it does a great job of re-creating the experience of the Germans steamrolling the Russians in 1941 but then getting gradually ground down by Russian numbers and eventually the Russians are using the steamroller by late 1944.
Thanks for all the comments on this blog. It goes to show what a good game TRC was and still is. I now have a copy of Russian Front and also Russia Besieged - so looking forward to getting them to the table and comparing how they play -and how they convey the war in the east.
I played Stalingrad last year, intending to make a You Tube video about it. It was such a poor design that I scrapped the project. With a few bad die rolls, the Germans can literally lose on the first turn without the Russians even moving!
I don't know about the lack of Soviet air units being an oversight, for the simple reason that the designer's prior game to the Russian Campaign was a game called The African Campaign, which did have both Axis and Allied air units for the fight for North Africa. So I would guess the lack of Soviet air units in this game was a deliberate play balance decision. I do agree with you that a single Stormovik, starting in 1943, is a good idea.
Which one? Matrix came out with a 2nd version in the last few years that hopefully fixed the air war problems in the first version. It was badly designed and really completely unrealistic. I have the 2nd version but haven't played it yet.
Why don't you have your German mountain unit in the MOUNTAINS in around Hungary? That's all you need to stem ANY Soviets around there. They move good through and will double defense. The Russian will never make it to Hungary in the first few years. You should have the rest of your German units in the Southern Region smashing through towards Kiev. You should go for Odessa off the bat as well.
I love this game! Great vid. What's the status on the 5th edition Delux? Anyone figure out how to play this game remotely or online? I wish i could find ways to play this game with live opponents. Any ideas? Thanks!
All I know about a deluxe version is that GMT have the game on their P500 page (so for ore order) along with mounted maps. Compass games are I believe in pre order for the 1974 version of the game. Have you ever used Vassal - it’s a tool for playing games online. Just another thought, Russia Besieged has also been republished in a deluxe version - by Compass Games I think. RB is similar To Russian Campaign but like a version which Russian Campaign could have evolved into.
@@Secretwargamer Thank you for your prompt reply. Never used Vassal, but will take a look. Thanks. As i understand it, the Deluxe 5th edition has been in 'development' for almost a decade and is still un-published. But the sneak peek pics of the map and units are tantalizing. Still, I'll hold the pre-order pending the official release. Meanwhile, i sure wish i could find a live opponent. Suffering in Vegas.
My grandfather passed away a couple years ago and in his will, he gave me this game and now I'm finally getting around to play it and I'm so excited.
Russian Campaign, Fortress Europa, Third Reich were the backbone of wargaming in the '70's. I played 40,000 hours on all three!
it is still a classic..and still relevant..kicks no retreats ass...

Ever? You've played them all have you? LMAO
@@karlheinzvonkroemann2217 Which game do you think does it better?
I had this when I was a kid. One of my early stepping stones on wargaming the Eastern Front in WW2.

I hope your grand father’s gift to you brings many hours of pleasure. This is truly a classic war game.

One of my favorites, but better to play with the 3 sector weather
Great video. Thanks
Used to have this game a long long time ago. Play Gary Grigsby's Eastern Front computer version these days. Has a good AI and game system.

Stukas add x3 to any attack
What do you think of the game Russian Front? Worse than Russian Campaign or better?
Damn good game
It was easy to play, and therefore fun, but not really an accurate portrayal of the Eastern Front. I wish I still had it
My 2nd game!
I’m looking forward to the eventual publication of the delux version by GMT….

Who else gets annoyed at the C (contact [unresolved]) outcome?
