Few months ago, there was a strong lightning and not sure what happened..but the power seems to have bounced from the transformer into the house and there was no load ( we were away) and it affected certain devices (the neutral got damanged). The electrical guy told us that if some devices were ON, such an issue would not have happened. Is there any explanation for this phenomenon? The power went in reverse back to the transformer it seems... since no load absorbed it at home. Please explain. Interesting...

      Hi Nitin,
From the above information, I think the devices were all in switched-off condition and still damage has happened. If this is the scenario, it's not because of any issues with the transformer.
It could be either lightning, that struck on the overhead powerlines or affected any trees or high mast etc. Due to this lightning surges entered your building.
Lightning surges can only cross the insulation on the switches or any circuit breaker to affect your equipment in off condition. These surges can enter either through powerlines or through your building earthing, resulting in damaging your equipment.
However, to protect your equipment, it is safe to install surge protection devices (SPD) in your system.
