While it's appeared clear 3 yrs in McKinnon may actually end up being the winner of the 3. It all depends how they age - how injuries play into it in the next 5 -8 yrs

Honestly, the thing that really has shocked me this year is his physicality. At only 18, 6'0", and under 200 lbs, I expected a rookie season that looked more like McDavid with him trying to be slippery and just avoid the physical play as much as possible. Instead, I see him using a high IQ to take hits safely instead of outright avoiding them, and while he isn't laying a ton of big hits, I'm seeing him absolutely _body_ NHL veterans along the boards. He's just SO much stronger than I ever imagined he could be at 18, especially as a smaller center. Like I said, it's not that he's just manhandling anyone, but he's using his intelligence to augment solid enough strength to outright win battles where any other 18 year old would be expected to just get out-muscled.
Until Celebrini came along, Eklund was not only probably the only good draft pick they'd had in at least 10 years, I foresaw him outshining the 6 guys drafted ahead of him in a pretty weak draft year. Only time can tell, since the 2021 draft year only mostly started playing last year, but so far I think that prediction is ringing true. He's strong, he's smart, and his shot is fantastic. Last year on a team that was literally losing on purpose, he put up more points than any of the players drafted ahead of him, and even if Beniers had a better rookie season, that was on a team that went to the playoffs that year, not a team that finished absolutely dead last, and last year Beniers was well behind Eklund on points. So right now I'm standing by what I said when they announced Eklund as their pick in 2021--he was the best pick of the draft, and he somehow went 7th overall.
Celebrini is literally the captain of the Sharks at 18 years old. Mack is the best player on the ice on a nightly basis for SJ. He leads by example and plays his tail off every shift. He has already earned the respect of everyone in the organization in just 28 games and is starting to demand more from his teammates. This kid has got the skill, IQ, compete, leadership and the drive to keep getting better. He also doesn't back down when opposing teams take runs at him and isn't afraid to get into battles along the boards. He is definitely winning the Calder if he stays healthy! The future is bright in San Jose, the hard part as a Sharks fan is waiting another 3-4 years for the rest of the baby sharks to arrive! One other note to consider on why Celebrini is playing so well early in his rookie season is Mack grew up around professional sports. He got to see first hand at a young age what it takes behind the scenes to be an elite professional athlete and how to win championships since his father was a trainer for the Vancouver Canucks and is now with the Golden State Warriors. He as also been a training machine his entire life and wants to be the BEST player period, once again due to his father instilling that compete in him as a kid. He is extremely critical of himself and his play, especially when he makes mistakes that hurt the team and he flat out HATES losing. Love this kid. He is a joy to watch and I'm so happy the Sharks got him!
Bedard landed on the worst team ever and was told you're the guy and pretty much the only guy, so go win us some games. That was not fair to him. No other 18 year old ever had to deal with that to my recollection.
I was telling my brother and father during my own scouting that I wouldn't be surprised whatsoever if he were better than Bedard due to his complete game, powerful skating and size. Time will tell but Celebrini already looks like a complete, true #1 center at 18. He's a treat to watch. Bedard probably has a little more natural skill and a laser of a shot. I can see him scoring more goals and perhaps more points but he'll never be as good a two-way center imo. The Sharks are rebuilding very well too. Hopefully they both get the support they need in the coming seasons.
I think it's a win/win for Mack and the Sharks. He's not under the pressure he would be at the Habs or Chicago. San Jose absolutely loves him, and they just appreciate his presence on the ice. The Tank is really an amazing place rn, win or lose.
My Christmas wish to Santa was a Sharks line of Smith, Celebrini, and Kovalenko. I say let the kids shine... If Celebrini keeps up the point-per-game pace, he'll win the Calder easily...
I was the same way. He starts the preseason getting hurt then missed 12 games of the regular season. I was thinking he was too soft for the NHL. But he has shown me how good and how strong he is. He is the future of the franchise
I do remember being a bit confused when you did not have Macklin in your top 5 Calder prediction. Gauthier and Stankoven over him did not make sense even at the time. Obviously Celebrini has exceeded everyone’s expectations at this point. Props to you for acknowledging the mistake though.
If the calder is going to a forward it's celebrini not even close. Honestly for me the race is between Hutson, Wolf, and Celebrini for the Calder. Center, Defense, and Goalie are the hardest positions for rookies to break into in the NHL and those three have all been outstanding.
@@mcj44Michkov doesnt impact the game as much as the others. He doesnt really drives play and is a huge liability on defense. Celibrini and Wolf and definitely the front runners with Hutson not far behind.

He also 100% impacts the game just as much as the others if not more, as shown on the scoresheet. Already the 2nd best player in Philadelphia and he and Konecny keep that teams offense afloat. Celebrini on a per game basis is easily the pick, but it’s a 2 man race with the injury.

People were telling me I'm crazy for saying before the draft that Celebrini will be better than Bedard but there seems to be more people agreeing with me now.
The one thing that has really won me over about Celebrini is just how little he cares about his stats. I'll admit that, as a long time Sharks fan, I felt the Sharks should have went D instead of Celebrini. I wasn't down on his skill and ability, I just felt that the Sharks had fewer D prospects. There have been multiple times where a reporter has asked him about how well he did in a game and his response, basically, was, "Yea... would have been nicer to win." That shows a maturity well beyond his years. I also like the fact that he seems uncomfortable talking about himself. He has been an intermission guest on the Sharks TV broadcasts and when asked about his play, he says very little. It isn't from him being uncomfortable talking to the media. He will rattle on and on about his teammates, just won't talk much about himself. Very solid D play, an offensive juggernaut in the making, unselfish, and a team guy who loves to play the game... Yea... I'm more than happy to be wrong about the pick.
Yikes, Celebrini was the 1OA clearly, it would have been idiotic to pass on that for any of the D last year. Especially since Celebrini was projecting as a strong defensive center, potentially selke level.
Just checked the stats. Celebrini is tied with Michkov with 12 goals. Celebrini has 27 points in 27 games. Celebrini is averaging a point per game. Michkov has 29 points in 35 games. Good rookie battle for rookie of the year.
Points aren't everything. Celibrini is a world above the rest, with Wolf and Hutson behind tied in 2nd place for the impact they have within their teams as rookies
I think Celebrini is the best 18 year old in this league since Crosby. The Calder Trophy is already his. Going by his PPG, he's pretty comparable with McDavid and Bedard, but I think Celebrini's overall play have been much more impressive than theirs were. That's why I rank his season higher. He really does remind me of Crosby. That same fighting spirit and the consistent smart plays, not just in the offensive zone, but his ability to grab loose pucks, intercept passes and carrying the puck. He already seems to have one of the best zone entries in the league. He's already competent at face offs, which is almost unheard of for a teenager. I don't see any flaws. None of his technical or physical skills are S class, atleast right now, but his smarts often leads him towards unpredictable plays when carrying the puck, passing or shooting, which can amplify his effectiveness.
I just hope that if the Sharks rise again they don't squander their opportunity. They were so dominant for so long right after the lockout. Once they got Joe Thornton in that trade they just remained dominant for many years to come and continue to build more of a great team. The Sharks should have won multiple Stanley cups. They were that much of a powerhouse, but they never won a single one. 2015 ironically was a year that they missed the playoffs and then in 2016 I guess maybe because there weren't really any expectations for them since they missed the playoffs the year before, that's when the sharks have their best season and made it all the way to the Stanley cup final which I sadly was expecting him to lose to the penguins anyways, however I do have to point out that the Sharks did still play pretty well by bringing it to six games in the first place. I knew it was just a matter of time before the Sharks would drop down to the bottom because all those amazing players that made them so dominant for so long were all getting old. Several of them have retired. I even went to the Patrick Marleau retirement ceremony, but sadly due to budgeting I couldn't go to the Joe Thornton one. The sharks are by far the most frustrating team to be a fan of in the bay area. They were the only team that remained so dominant for so long but they never want to Stanley cup. At least when the raiders were still around we all knew they were going to suck so it was a pleasant surprise when they actually played pretty well on rare occasion. The A's were frustrating because of how cheap the ownership was but somehow they would find a way to make it to the playoffs on occasion anyway. But the fact is the Sharks just would always be so good but never when the championship. I think they're the biggest choke artists in the Bay Area and one of the biggest in all of sports. In fact it's a lot less frustrating to be a fan of the Sharks now because we know they suck. It looks like they're improving this year and we'll see how that turns out at the end of the year and hopefully they build up a much better roster but this time when they do can they just stop choking in the playoffs
You can’t compare bedard to celebrini they are completely different players. Bedard is more like a Patrick Kane and celebrini is more like Crosby. Bedard should be playing wing
As someone who follows SJ, it’s clear to me that Celebrini is already the best player on the team. Yes, SJ is bottom 3 in the league right now, but for an 18 year old to already be any NHL team’s MVP is crazy. By the time he’s 21 years old and some of the other young talent develops around him, the Sharks will become a very difficult team to beat. I think SJ will probably struggle record wise this year and next, but especially if San Jose wins next year’s Gavin McKenna sweeps, they will be scary-good.

Anyway, Celebrini has Toffoli, Eklund, Zetterlund, Granlund who are all top 6 forwards and Smith who’s another top prospect and Walman to quarterback the powerplay. Bedard has Teravainen who’s been inconsistent, Bertuzzi who hasn’t been great, and that’s about it. Not to mention last year having Kurashev and whoever else while having similar production. Did I mention that Bedard was and still is a generational prospect while Cele was just a “future franchise cornerstone” (still great, but not Bedard level)

@@mcj44Michkov doesnt impact the game as much as the others. He doesnt really drives play and is a huge liability on defense.
Celibrini and Wolf and definitely the front runners with Hutson not far behind.
@@vincentjolicoeur the Calder is all about production, and Michkov isn’t the most flashy player yet still produces. He also 100% impacts the game just as much as the others if not more, as shown on the scoresheet. Already the 2nd best player in Philadelphia and he and Konecny keep that teams offense afloat. Celebrini on a per game basis is easily the pick, but it’s a 2 man race with the injury.
Haha based on being a black hole defensively while Celebrini has been excellent given his age? Celebrini Has more ppg than michkov, and soon more points, is far more consistent than Michkov and plays a more difficult position.

People were telling me I'm crazy for saying before the draft that Celebrini will be better than Bedard but there seems to be more people agreeing with me now.

The one thing that has really won me over about Celebrini is just how little he cares about his stats.
I'll admit that, as a long time Sharks fan, I felt the Sharks should have went D instead of Celebrini. I wasn't down on his skill and ability, I just felt that the Sharks had fewer D prospects.
There have been multiple times where a reporter has asked him about how well he did in a game and his response, basically, was, "Yea... would have been nicer to win." That shows a maturity well beyond his years. I also like the fact that he seems uncomfortable talking about himself. He has been an intermission guest on the Sharks TV broadcasts and when asked about his play, he says very little. It isn't from him being uncomfortable talking to the media. He will rattle on and on about his teammates, just won't talk much about himself.
Very solid D play, an offensive juggernaut in the making, unselfish, and a team guy who loves to play the game... Yea... I'm more than happy to be wrong about the pick.
Yikes, Celebrini was the 1OA clearly, it would have been idiotic to pass on that for any of the D last year. Especially since Celebrini was projecting as a strong defensive center, potentially selke level.
When your whole team sucks and you finish dead last, you take best player available, not positionally. But hey, go sharks baby!

Just checked the stats. Celebrini is tied with Michkov with 12 goals. Celebrini has 27 points in 27 games. Celebrini is averaging a point per game. Michkov has 29 points in 35 games. Good rookie battle for rookie of the year.
Points aren't everything. Celibrini is a world above the rest, with Wolf and Hutson behind tied in 2nd place for the impact they have within their teams as rookies

Next Crosby
I think Celebrini is the best 18 year old in this league since Crosby. The Calder Trophy is already his. Going by his PPG, he's pretty comparable with McDavid and Bedard, but I think Celebrini's overall play have been much more impressive than theirs were. That's why I rank his season higher. He really does remind me of Crosby. That same fighting spirit and the consistent smart plays, not just in the offensive zone, but his ability to grab loose pucks, intercept passes and carrying the puck. He already seems to have one of the best zone entries in the league. He's already competent at face offs, which is almost unheard of for a teenager. I don't see any flaws. None of his technical or physical skills are S class, atleast right now, but his smarts often leads him towards unpredictable plays when carrying the puck, passing or shooting, which can amplify his effectiveness.
I just hope that if the Sharks rise again they don't squander their opportunity. They were so dominant for so long right after the lockout. Once they got Joe Thornton in that trade they just remained dominant for many years to come and continue to build more of a great team. The Sharks should have won multiple Stanley cups. They were that much of a powerhouse, but they never won a single one. 2015 ironically was a year that they missed the playoffs and then in 2016 I guess maybe because there weren't really any expectations for them since they missed the playoffs the year before, that's when the sharks have their best season and made it all the way to the Stanley cup final which I sadly was expecting him to lose to the penguins anyways, however I do have to point out that the Sharks did still play pretty well by bringing it to six games in the first place.
I knew it was just a matter of time before the Sharks would drop down to the bottom because all those amazing players that made them so dominant for so long were all getting old. Several of them have retired. I even went to the Patrick Marleau retirement ceremony, but sadly due to budgeting I couldn't go to the Joe Thornton one.
The sharks are by far the most frustrating team to be a fan of in the bay area. They were the only team that remained so dominant for so long but they never want to Stanley cup. At least when the raiders were still around we all knew they were going to suck so it was a pleasant surprise when they actually played pretty well on rare occasion. The A's were frustrating because of how cheap the ownership was but somehow they would find a way to make it to the playoffs on occasion anyway. But the fact is the Sharks just would always be so good but never when the championship. I think they're the biggest choke artists in the Bay Area and one of the biggest in all of sports.
In fact it's a lot less frustrating to be a fan of the Sharks now because we know they suck. It looks like they're improving this year and we'll see how that turns out at the end of the year and hopefully they build up a much better roster but this time when they do can they just stop choking in the playoffs
You can’t compare bedard to celebrini they are completely different players. Bedard is more like a Patrick Kane and celebrini is more like Crosby.

As someone who follows SJ, it’s clear to me that Celebrini is already the best player on the team. Yes, SJ is bottom 3 in the league right now, but for an 18 year old to already be any NHL team’s MVP is crazy. By the time he’s 21 years old and some of the other young talent develops around him, the Sharks will become a very difficult team to beat.
I think SJ will probably struggle record wise this year and next, but especially if San Jose wins next year’s Gavin McKenna sweeps, they will be scary-good.
Hutson if Laine can keep scoring on pp, he's a point per game since last 13 games. before had no finishers and not on first wave.

Anyway, Celebrini has Toffoli, Eklund, Zetterlund, Granlund who are all top 6 forwards and Smith who’s another top prospect and Walman to quarterback the powerplay. Bedard has Teravainen who’s been inconsistent, Bertuzzi who hasn’t been great, and that’s about it. Not to mention last year having Kurashev and whoever else while having similar production. Did I mention that Bedard was and still is a generational prospect while Cele was just a “future franchise cornerstone” (still great, but not Bedard level)

What do you mean by a limited game? He's extremely well-rounded, great both offensively and defensively, makes a bunch of great setups, has a great shot, and he gets involved physically as well.
